We came here on a timeshare exchange and this property was perfect for our needs! First, I have to say that Marriott must treat their employees well. Every person we talked to at the front desk was genuinely friendly and helpful and seemed to enjoy their jobs! That is so rare these days. Have to give a shout out to Craig Cole, the front desk supervisor. What a great guy; always a smile and extremely helpful. Elda was very nice, too, as was everyone. I wish more resorts would understand how important customer service is to the whole vacation experience.
Having been warned about the slower elevators we really didn't find them difficult at all. We never waited more than a few minutes, except during checkout, which was expected. The building is on top of a shopping mall and we found that very convenient, and loved being able to just walk across the street to the beach. We also really appreciated being able to get chairs and umbrellas and beach/pool towels from the resort at no cost. We did not have a rental car so I can't comment on parking problems but I do have to say that it wasn't all THAT confusing to get to the right floor/elevator from the mall. After a few minutes you figure it out. And Marriott did send us a very nice informative e-mail before our vacation with a good explanation.
We had requested an ocean view and not too high (knowing the elevator situation). We were on the 7th floor which was perfect; not too close to the bottom and noise from businesses, and not so high that we had to wait too long for the elevators. We have two teenagers and even though they had to sleep on the pullout couch in our 1-bedroom unit, it was spacious enough that we didn't feel cramped.
We had a beautiful view of the ocean from our balcony, and it was nice to be able to see the pool and hot tub from our ocean view room to see who was there and if it was crowded or empty, etc. We had requested to be away from any A/C units based on other comments, and the front desk gave us a good spot. The master bedroom was lovely with a jacuzzi and separate vanity area and sink. And we slept so well; the sheets and pillows were really nice quality and the king mattress, while firm, was still really comfortable.
The whole unit was beautiful! Modern, comfortable, clean, well-maintained, and perfectly stocked/equipped. The kitchen had everything we needed and it was such a luxury to have a washer and dryer, too (and they worked very well). The cable had lots of channels and also the internet worked pretty well most of the time.
We like to make our own breakfast and lunches to save money, and with the 24-hour CVS downstairs, it was easy to do. The appliances were modern and worked very well.
As far as the amenities, we really enjoyed the heated outdoor pool and also made daily use of the two hot tubs. The pool bar was nice, too though we didn't use it much as the drinks were a bit pricey. You can also get food there. Our teens also enjoyed the outdoor ping pong table on the deck area of the activity room. It might have been nice to have a special room/area dedicated to teens that was open later (like cruise ships have). The activity room closed at 6pm on weekends and 8pm on weeknights, and so after dinnertime there really wasn't anywhere for our teens to go except the pool area. But that's a small quibble.
It was also nice to have a convenience store in the lobby, though honestly we got better deals (and a much bigger selection) at CVS so we didn't use it much. But it's nice to have it there in a pinch.
Our favorite restaurant was LuLu's Bait Shack and we had two great meals there. The other restaurants we tried were very average (Hooters and the Big Kahuna). We had heard that the Atlantic Surf Club was good but didn't get to try it. We ventured out to Deano's on Atlantic Avenue for some good pub grub and live Reggae music; that was fun. We also took the Duck Tour and used a half price Groupon, which was fun though the tour guide talked way too much. I would definitely check out Groupons for discounts in the area; there are lots of them. Didn't get to use the trolley but we did rent bikes for an hour and it was fun using the A1A bike lanes to get a nice view of the ocean.
But back to the Marriott, I want to thank everyone there for helping us have a wonderful Christmas week in Ft. Lauderdale. We will definitely stay there again!
