Our first impression of Lago Mar was old school 50's 60's hotel, but bou were we wrong. The rooms were clean and spacious. There were plenty of activists for the kids including mini golf and tw great pools. Perhaps Lago Mar's best asset is its large private beach - the beach was never crowded and very clean. Only issue is that we wish the drink service on the beach was more frequent. All of this nd the resort was surprisingly affordable.

Our family had beautiful pictures taken on the beach by Michael, the resort photographer. He was flexible on our times and very affordable vs some of the photographers we've worked with at home. Highly recommend the beach pictures!

Quite pricy but staff is friendly. Right on the beach. Great for family. Room service food is pricy and not yummy. The French onion soup is quite sour. The pool and playground area is great.

Food is quite terrible, frankly.

This was my third trip to Lago Mar in the past five years with my teenage son and daughter, and as usual we had a totally relaxing vacation at this well-kept, private oceanside resort. All year long we can't wait to plant ourselves under a thatched tiki hut poolside, or enjoy the private beach where we take in views of incoming and outgoing pleasure boats, yachts, cargo ships and even cruise ships that navigate the nearby inlet.

While we considered trying some of the more modern hotels along the main strip of Fort Lauderdale beach, we were turned off once we realized the beach itself was across the busy street, overcrowded with tourists and locals, and it is not as long and lush as Lago Mar's private beach which is only steps from our hotel room.

The rooms themselves are very spacious in a Tommy Bahama theme, offering terrific beach and pool views from our private balcony.

Also, we've become very fond of the extremely friendly staff at Lago Mar, many of whom have been there for several years which speaks volumes about the resort itself and the work environment they seem to enjoy. Check in and get to know them, and you're like family on each subsequent visit. My daughter was delighted that Maritza in the soda shop remembered her and exactly how she liked her hot dog, and I enjoy the entire pool bar staff (Mike, Joey, Paul, Ron and Nicole) who offer great service with a smile. Why would we go anywhere else in Fort Lauderdale when all this awaits?

Finally, we signed up for a sunset photography session with house photographer (and great bartender) Mike Holmes. Mike struck a very friendly rapport with my sometimes rebellious teens, and he was able to bring out their true smiles and character in postcard perfect beach scenes at a very reasonable price. Shortly after the shoot, he burned about 75 photos for us on a handy little USB drive that I slipped on my keychain and departed the resort with memories for a lifetime. It's only been a few weeks since our visit, and we've looked at those pictures together at least a half a dozen times (and yes, the kids really like them and have them plastered all over Facebook too!) Thank you Mike, and thank you Lago Mar for another sensational family vacation. We will return, and in fact I am already planning a week for next summer with two of my friends and their teenage kids! See you soon.....

the hotel is located about 15 minutes from the airport on the ocean and on a lake. the beach is 10 acres and is beautiful. we had a suite that had large master bedroom kitchen and dining living room and a large deck overlooking the pool and beach. the pool was large and snaked around the property. there was a miniature golf course shuffle board and tennis courts. the lobby was beautiful and the check in and out was fast and efficient. everything was just great. the hotel is privately owned and the owner responds to a question air that is in your room. we brought our own breakfast and lunch and had dinner out.

Room Tip: get a room with a pool view and you can also see the ocean.

We usually spend a week or two at Lago Mar during the end of August once all the schools are back in session. We love it so much we bought a house down the road to retire to and plan on joining their club to continue to enjoy their amenities. Of course I was born down there and my husband moved to the area when he was young so we appreciate the ambiance of the resort and area. We usually stay in a suite since we like to make most of our meals. If you're expecting bling and flash, you're going to the wrong place but if you want an old-world experience with great staff and quiet evening, head on down. Eric and the crew are great. We usually meet my cousin and his wife at the gazebo for drinks in the evening. You have a number of locals who hang out their and they'll let you know about what's going on in the area.

Room Tip: If you want a newer style hotel room you'll want to stay in the southern wing. The northern win...

Lago Mar is a beautiful resort located RIGHT on the beach. If you are a family with small children, then this is a must-visit place! The beach is clean and the resort offers umbrellas & lounge chairs for a low price per day, as well as cabanas on the beach. The beach servers are attentive and the water is a super short walk from your hotel room. All activities are located close together, so it is super easy to run back up to the room if you need something - which with small kids, is super important. Activities on site include: life-size chess game, ping pong in sand, 2 playgrounds in the sand, outdoor shuffleboard, 2 swimming pools, a miniature golf course, a handful of restaurants, an old fashioned soda shop, clothing & gift boutique, spa, fitness center, sand volleyball courts, yoga on the beach, exercise classes, etc. The concierge is also very helpful. If you are traveling with a family, be sure to book a suite - they are HUGE, almost like an apartment with a separate master bedroom. The ocean front rooms are wonderful. The food is delicious at the main dining room and there is also a delicious breakfast buffet that we visited every morning.

Also, Mike Holmes is the resort photographer... and this was the highlight of our trip! You can schedule your family pictures at sunset or sunrise on the beach with Mike, and he is amazingly talented. Every beach hotel in the country should offer this service... be sure to book an appointment either before you arrive or as soon as you get there. We love our pictures - thanks, Mike!

Room Tip: Book a ocean front suite! They are huge, and very affordable

My family and I spent only a couple of nights at this hotel in July and could have done with a couple more. A lot of the guests we spoke to seemed only to be staying for a few days as well either pre or post a cruise. It's ideally suited for that purpose being extremely close to the cruise terminal - indeed it's so close that our sat nav sent us into the cruise terminal whilst searching for the hotel on the first day!
If you're staying for anything but a night, a car really is a must otherwise you're trapped on site or have to rely on taxis to ferry you about. There really is nothing within walking distance but a 5-10 minute drive brings you to all sorts of restaurants and shops. We drove 5 minutes to a supermarket and stocked up our in room fridge with water, juice and nibbles for a tenth of the price of the store on site.
We stayed in a one room suite overlooking the main pool. There was a separate bedroom with a king bed and then a sofa bed in the sitting room. I had meant to get a room with the sofa bed that turned into 2 single beds for our two teenage boys but apparently had not read the website properly and had booked the wrong category. An Executive suite rather than a Superior Executive suite or something. My mistake but take care if you're looking for the same.
The rooms themselves were clean but a little tired. The whole resort is a bit tired and dated in need of a lick of paint but it must be tough maintaining the resort in the Floridian climate.
We only ate once in the restaurant - breakfast on the first morning. We had the buffet, scrambled eggs, bacon, cereal. Distinctly average and unremarkable in every way. I had to sign for it (as the whole resort is cashless) and when I got the bill with all the extras it was the best part of $100 for 4. I felt that was pretty extortionate for what we got.
On the plus side, the hotel is right on the beach which is great. There are plenty of chairs but you have to pay extra for a beach umbrella which is a bit strange. There are also no umbrellas around the pool so finding shade in the Floridian sun is tough. I don't understand why hotels provide sunbeds but no umbrellas.
In summary, I thought the hotel was fine for a few days R&R but if you are spending more time here, you really need a car to get around.
