“Great family resort hotel right on the beach!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2011

This hotel was fantastic! We wanted to stay in a resort hotel that was right on the beach. A lot of Ft. Lauderdale hotels are not right on the beach or they have access to a public beach. Lago Mar has a private beach...it was so relaxing & peaceful. This hotel is so family friendly--playground, miniature golf, shuffle board, ping pong, tennis courts, an amazing pool area, and of course a beautiful beach. The rooms were fabulous! They had a separate living area and a fridge & microwave which came in very, very handy. We even had professional pictures done of our family on the beach, Mike was terrific! The only things we would improve would be...firmer mattresses & pillows; more personalized service in the pool area (set up your chairs with pads, pillows, bring you water/drinks; we visit the Four Seasons in Las Colinas, TX & they have exceptional poolside service!). We really enjoyed our stay & would definitely stay there again!

Just returned from a weekend away with couples . Really enjoyed this place. It is right on the beach as compared with many other Ft. Lauderdale hotels which are across the road from the beach. The staff was amazing, always smiling and ready to help. We had booked a standard room and were upgraded to a one bedroom with a great pool view. The pool view also had some ocean view. The price for a standard room seemed fairly high but we went in March which is a busier season. Couldn't complain though after getting upgraded. Also, we asked for a late check out due to a mid-afternoon flight and we had no problem getting this. There was also plenty free parking available. This is an older hotel which looks to have been recently refurbished. Rooms were very clean and I am fussy.
The one bedroom suite had one bathroom with a tub shower. The bedroom had a king bed. Kitchen area had a stove, microwave and full size refrigerator. The king pull out sofa was unlike other pull outs I have seen at hotels. The sofa bed contained two separate twins which could open independently next to each other. If I had my kids along it would have been great since they will not sleep in the same bed together.
We saw all age groups at this hotel from geriatric to families with small children.
The only complaint I have would be that an 18% gratuity was placed on everything. Already high priced drinks at the gazebo bar had the full gratuity applied along with the breakfast buffet, and counter service. Since breakfast buffet had exceptional service we even added to this gratuity but it was hard to justify this at the gazebo bar. They also don't take cash so every purchase ended up on the room tab.
There are no stores within reasonable walking distance for food and drink supplies besides the expensive gift shop so I would suggest stopping at the grocery store to load up on drinks and snacks if possible.
If in the area again would definitely return with or without kids.

We traveled on Valentine's weekend with our 4 year old son. First, the pluses - - the resort is child friendly, and it is great not to have to cross the street to access the beach area, which essentially begins at the hotel's pool. The room was clean, and the resort seemed well kept, though definetly not up to the standards of a 4 or 5 star property. In general, the resort seemed quiet, which was fine with us. Also, the person that we made our reservation with - Cary - was helpful, friendly and offered a room upgrade. However, other than the bellman, she was really the only friendly person. The others mostly were indifferent. The hostess at dinner on Valentine's seemed restful of the fact that guests dared to bother her. We were offered the WORST table in the restaurant, even though it was early and the restaurant was about 20% full. Our child is well behaved, we were guests for four days, and find that to be simply unacceptable. We asked for a better table (for what would have proven to be an expensive meal), but it fell on deaf ears. In addition, we asked for a late check out. Even though the resort was no where near full, the front desk person rudely and firmly refused to accomodate our request. Now, I understand this IS an accomdation, but if the answer is "no," at least she could have offered us the use of the spa for a quick shower. As it was, we were forced to wash off the sand in the sink in their indoor restroom, as there was no changing facility in their single stall outdoor restroom near the pool area..

The decor of the room was atrocious, stuck somewhere, kindly, in the mid-80s. In addition, it is untenable to hold the hotel out as 4 or 5 star, with a tiny, dark bathroom with a combo tub/shower. However, it was convenient to have a small kitchen, the view was very nice, and we went really for the beach. If we had cared about the room, we would have been more disappointed.

All in all, we would not got back to Lago Mar, but we are not sure it is not the best hotel in the area, for families traveling with young children, as long as you do not set your expectations very high.

This is our second year at Lago Mar, and once again we were very pleased with our stay. It is the kind of place where families feel welcome and parents can relax. The resort is small and self contained, which is great for families. The pace is slow; there is not a "scene" by any stretch and it gets very quiet at about 8:30. It is clean and comfortable. The Ritz it is not...and that is fine. The rooms are spacious and the kitchenettes make it very nice. The resort does need some updates...public restrooms are in need of a facelift, shuffleboard court has seen better days. The food is good. The main restaurant is very nice with a kids menu and the pool bar has very good sandwiches and salads. The best kept secret about Lago Mar is Michael! He is a bartender by day and a fabulous photographer come sunset. His family photo shoots on the beach and on the property are beautiful and his prices are a bargain! $40 for the shoot and very reasonable prices for prints, books or the entire collection on cd. We bought them all. His pictures are a "must get" for any guest! We will most likely be back next year!

My wife and I just spent four relaxing days at this tropical resort. The resort had everything we were looking for and the friendly staff exceeded our expectations in attentiveness. Enjoyed the poolside service, the tiki bar and the restaurant on the property. Even though it was busy it didn't feel crowded because of the expansive property. Met a lot of people who come back year over year, a good sign of how special this resort is. If you visit make sure you speak to Michael at the Tiki Bar to have your photo taken on the beach. A great experience. Thank you Lago Mar.

My husband and I and our two sons-preteen and teen truly enjoyed our stay at Lago Mar. The staff were friendly and attentive to our requests. Our room had a beautiful view of the landscaped pool with the ocean just beyond it. Our kids were not bored-they played mini golf and table tennis-hung out at the pool and the beach. The bar staff made frequent trips to the beach and around the pool to see if you needed anything.
We also had our family photos taken by Mike (one of the bartenders) whom I had read about on Trip Advisor before we left. He was fun and efficient and took "one of a kind' photos of our family. He did a phenomenal job.
Our only complaint was the high prices of the food in the restaurant. A breakfast buffet for four (which was delicious) was pricey-fortunately we rented a car and ate most of our meals off site.
We would definitely plan on returning to Lago Mar in the future.

Really enjoyed Lago Mar; nice beach, very friendly staff, roomy accommodations. Tennis courts are worn out, but other facilities are fine. Nice to be in a quieter area of Fort Lauderdale. Enjoyed watching the cruise ships leave the port. It is great to stay at a family owned resort instead of the usual corporate sameness. We really were impressed by all of the staff. They seemed happy to be there. It is now one of our favorites!
