This hotel is located right beside the train tracks & a major highway. We had to listen to the train going by honking every half hour! It was brutal. We hardly slept! The "gym" was really weak too................

I just spent one night here at Universal so I could catch an early flight the next morning. You'll need good directions or a GPS to find the hotel (I drove up from the Keys) but it's well worth it. The room was clean, comfortable and affordable. The staff was great...from the front desk folks to the personable bartenders and waitstaff. Food from the restaurant was great (best buffalo wings I've ever tasted) and you'll enjoy the heated pool and/or deck chairs to relax. It's not the Ritz but it's a very nice, very clean and comfortable hotel with all the amenities. I'm returning next winter and will certainly stay here again.

I felt Monica made my stay worthwhile. The lobby is pretty. The outside is not very attractive. The city view is more a highway view. Worth having a pool or courtyard view. The king suite is very nice. The double room is fair. Clean. Complimentary breakfast disappointing. Monica was so kind and helpful at the front desk. I would stay again now that I know the area.

Room Tip: King suite definitely. Pool or courtyard view.

I live in Fort Lauderdale and I am constantly recommending hotels to my friends who visit from up north. The best hotel in Lauderdale is the W on the beach, but not all of my friends can afford $400 a night. So for my friends that are looking to spend less than $100 for a hotel, I strongly recommend the Universal Palms Hotel on Commercial and Powerline. For the price, this hotel not only has decent rooms but it has the nicest pool area of any hotel in South Florida in it's price range. Renee and the girls at the front desk are extremely helpful and the restaurant has great burgers.

Could update rooms' trim (bad workmanship) and popcorn ceiling. Nice tiling, clean, and comfortable suite. Would like to have seen information in the room about services, area, or even a phone book.

Staff (Jacques, who checked us out) was all friendly and helpful. Most were tri-lingual (French, Spanish, and English).

Restaurant was very slow with service and even the bills for our group...delivering one bill at a time Friday night, with an empty restaurant except for us.

Spring breakers were a little exuberant, but manageable. And what can I say about the proximity of the trains?

Overall, we had a pleasant stay. Our charges and suite were as agreed, though some others of our group came in a day later and had some difficulty with their reservations' charges and rooms. Management finally worked through those issues, but not entirely to the satisfaction of some in resolution or length of time disputing the issues.

Just got back from a week in Ft. Lauderdale with my daughters college softball team. I have to say I am completely surprised at some of the reviews talking about the staff and how people are mean and rude. We had such wonderful customer service from early check-in, to the great help from Doug (bartender) who helped us arrange a team party and karoake night at the bar. If you have a chance to order a pizza from the chef - do it. The hotel itself does need a little work, but for the price we paid - we can't complain. Thank you to all the staff at Universal Palms for all you did to make our stay so enjoyable!! Hope to see you again!

Room Tip: You will want to choose a room poolside to keep the majority of the street noise away, plus get a gr...

Stayed at this hotel for one night while getting ready to do a cruise the next day. Upon arrival, the front desk staff were great. Joel (?)..let us in a few hours early and even gave us a drink certificate for the lounge~from there is was all down hill.

Room was clean but very old. Hallways were in need of much repair. Not much lighting.

Then we had the misfortune of deciding to eat at the restaurant in house. DISASTER!!!

I have been in thousands of restaurants but never experienced such nightmare like the one we experienced in trying to order a simple dinner here. #30 minutes to be recognized before we had a waiter. Then, after ordering a simple meal...we waited ..and waited..and waited while the stafff buzzed around not knowing what they were doing. I finally asked where are dinner was and was quickly told that they are busy!! NO KIDDING....doing everything but waiting on customes!! I was even told by our waiter that unless we are Canadians..it will be a long wait. I guess they cater to local Canadians. That is fine if that is the agenda of the Canadian owner.....but he needs to address the lack of leadership in the restaurnat as it relates to managing people and servicing all customers.

Needless to say we left and never received our food!! HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE..
