Pelican Grand Beach Resort, A Noble House Resort
Ranked #9 of 128 Hotels in Fort Lauderdale
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 19, 2013

Our first trip to this resort was quite memorable thanks to the wonderful staff....Kudos to Paul (Mr. Mixology), Danielle & Jason for their great service at the diner and to our #1 All Stars * Shannon and Mary* for the laughs at the pool and lounge. We were blessed with fine weather and enjoyed the beach, restaurant and Lazy River. The staff was always at the ready and were helpful in educating us on the local attractions, eating establishments and night spots. The Sunday Brunch was spectacular...highly recommended...made my Father's Day one to remember!
We stayed in a privately owned corner unit on the 5th floor...great views of the waterfront and pool area...very comfortable...We will definitely be back and have already raved to friends.
Only problem that kept this rating from a 5 star ranking was the scheduling with housekeeping. I don't know if there is a lack of communication between front desk and cleaning staff but because this was a privately owned room all service had to be scheduled through front desk. We made plans to be out of our room at certain times and expected to come back to a clean room....NOT! While we were compensated with free meals (try the scallops!) it was a bit annoying to not have service when expected.

Overall, I would recommend the Pelican Grand Resort Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale. Like all other hotels, this one is not perfect. The rooms (Queen Ocean Front) are very spacious and fit our needs very well (Grandmother, Mother and 4 year old grandson). The staff is very nice and helpful. The pool was wonderful. The lazy river was good except for the grates that stick up and can be very harmful to your feet. I stepped on one and thought I sliced my foot open. There are signs but from where I entered the lazy river, I did not see them. The restaurant and ice cream shop are very pricey! Our first full night here, the 3 of us went to the lounge to have dinner and after tip, it was over $100 for the 3 of us. Nothing fancy, just a normal meal for each of us. There are a lot of hidden fees. We had a package deal through Expedia but when we got here we were told our credit card was being charged $75 a day which included $15 a day for amenities such as the towels, chairs, umbrellas, etc $28 a day parking and anything extra that may be charged during our stay. We would be refunded anything that was left over. We were not told of this extra $600 for a week expenditure. Come prepared! Also, wherever you go, whatever you do, be prepared to tip! The staff is very helpful but they are doing so to be tipped. This is very much a "nickle and dime" hotel that will cost you a fortune to stay here! Lastly, after dark, don't expect much lighting around the complex. There are no lights on the balconies, very little around the pool or the veranda and when you go out on your balcony at night, it is pitch black and you can't even see the beach! I would probably stay here again and would recommend it if you have the cash to spend. Bring a flashlight for night time viewing!

Room Tip: Pick ocean front to view during the day

This is our second vacation at the Pelican Grand. Both times we had a private balcony overlooking the beach and ocean. What a beautiful view! Every morning we would eat breakfast on the porch so we could have that same view to start our day. All the pool and beach staff are extremely friendly and helpful - especially Nathan. It was easy to get lounge chairs at the pool or the beach. And there was always a friendly face seeing if you needed refreshments! We will be back :)

I have been to this resort several times and typically have had a would have given it a 4 star rating. However, the last time I went it was not a good experience. The balcony had cigarette butts on it outside of our non smoking room, the lazy river had a lot of garbage floating in it, and there were not enough beach towels for all the guests. I initially wrote a complaint directly to the hotel but had no response. I have recommended this hotel previously to several people but at this point I have reservations. It's a wonderful property and still hold out hope they will rectify these issues.

The unit we rented on the 5th floor is owned by private individuals (via vrbo.com). The unit itself had a tremendous view, the bed was comfortable and everything was very clean. We were able to get a lounge chair each day by the pool. The view from the veranda was absolutely breath-taking (even during a thunderstorm).

However, there are many weddings taking place at this resort (more than one a day) whereby the lobby will be closed off, very loud and there is no access to the porch area. On one occasion the rockers were off limits due to a private party on the veranda. We were there Wedensday - Sunday and the lobby was used for a wedding, a reception and other events making the couches, etc. off-limits to any of the guests. This was partly because the bad weather had the otherwise rooftop events moved indoors. But, you should be aware that if there is bad weather and weddings planned, you will not have access to the lobby area or veranda. The rockers on the veranda was what sold us on this property. We were disappointed the one evening we could not use the veranda. We had dinner two nights at the restaurant and ate out on the veranda. Although expensive, we were on vacation and decided to splurge. The pavers out front were being repaired while we were there and the valet parking was not worth the $28 a day. However, the manager did credit the fee for the parking. We had guests join us Wednesday evening for dinner and it seemed that no one really knew what the charge for parking is for dining at the restaurant. A charge of $12 was made to our room for our guests' parking. While waiting on valet service the next day, we noticed a sign that indicated the price was $3.00 for parking for restaurant guests, $12 daily parking and $28 for overnight. This price too was adjusted on our bill.

Also, FYI if you get a drink on the veranda and they offer to "open a tab" it is for drinks on the veranda only. We asked to start a tab as we were going to have lunch at the lounge and thought we would settle up the bill at that time. However, we were advised that we could not do that. I understand that the server on the veranda may not have been the server at the lounge, but we would have made certain that both received their fair tip.

The staff does seem to be eager to help and the views from this resort are beautiful.

Room Tip: The 5th floor unit (ocean front) seemed to be in the middle of the resort with spectacular views.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for four nights last week. After reading great reviews on multiple websites, we were very excited to stay here. When we arrived there was a wedding taking place in the lobby, which was loud and forced the receptionist to forget pieces of information ask them multiple times (that really wasn't a big deal). We had paid a little extra money to get an ocean view room and expected everything to be perfect. We were given room 228 which has a very large patio, is a corner room, and has an extremely comfortable bed. It also abuts the boiler room, generator, and electric; all of which is running 24 hours a day. There is also a tent used for functions below our room which produced loud music and people throughout the night. Needless to say, it was extremely loud which prompted us to change rooms. We were told to check back later in the night and when we checked back they didn't have any rooms. We did this everyday and were turned away everyday.

The other major issue I had with The Pelican was the valet service. Valet is the only type of parking available at the hotel and there are overnight fees on top of the valet fees. If valet is the only service offered please provide a shuttle to las olas and the the main beach drag, because it is far too expensive to take the car in and out. Halfway through our trip The Pelican decided to do work on its driveway, which I think is great that they are keeping up the place, but, there was no planning involved for how the valet was going to work. We ended up waiting in our car for 30 minutes for someone to help us. Finally on our last night, knowing we had to get up early and catch a plane home, I asked a valet if someone will be out here ready to serve us at 4 am and he assured me that they are open 24 hours. After we checked out that morning there was no valet outside to be seen. We waited ten minutes and asked the front desk to page him. We waited ten more minutes and asked the receptionist to page him again. After five more minutes of waiting he finally arrived. He then went to retrieve the car (which for some reason took ten minutes even though there was no else out there) and he brings us the wrong car. FInally he brings us our car 40 minutes after we intended to leave for the airport which left us scurrying through the terminal to catch our flight.
Please don't me wrong, there were parts of the hotel like the postcard lounge and the beach and pool area that were absolutely spectacular, but for me the bad outweighed the good and I really can't recommend staying here.

The east facing verandah is the signature area of the hotel. Rocking chairs await your lazy gazing out to the ocean from sunrise to well past sunset. The private beach offers umbrellas, loungers and waves all day. The pool side experience is awesome. We found our loungers, with the help of pool staff, right after breakfast (pricey but very good) and sat under the umbrella or splashed in the heated pool or floated in the lazy river, all day. Lunch & drinks (also pricey but very good) is served by very attentive staff all day.

We were understanding that some of the rooms are hotel owned and others, like ours, is owned by individuals. The hotel manages all the rooms. Individually owned rooms do not get cleaned every day automatically but that is available for a fee. Rooms fall right out of a Scarlett OHara novel, with a tall plush mattress bed and cozy sheets, a ceiling fan and great in room A/C, TV, balcony, clean bathroom and more.

Easily accessed by airport shuttles, overnight parking is pricey. There isn't much for alternative dining in the area so eating at the resort is likely your only option. Restaurant on premise is friendly, with very good food. Expect $30 for breakfast, $50 for lunch ad $80 for dinner for two people total.

The pool size area seats about 60 people with very comfortable lounge chairs that recline to flat. Plush towels are supplied for on top of the chairs. These are your chairs as long as you want them to be all day. The pool is shallow and round, perfect for a cooling dip, but not as a swimming activity pool.

The lazy river is very relaxing. Grab a tube that fits and sit on top of it, or in it, and float around the river as many times as you want. Early morning and later afternoon is best.

Overall we would definitely return. Booking rates vary on all the travel sites so be choosey when booking. There are no resort fees here.

Room Tip: There are two types of rooms, ocean side and street side. The street goes quiet around 10pm nightly...
