We stayed at the Il Lugano Hotel prior to our cruise out of the port at Ft. Lauderdale. This hotel is extremely comfortable and elegant. The concierge Patty is very knowledgeable and most willing to accommodate the hotel guests. The beds are the most comfortable that we have ever encountered. The washer and dryer are a great convenience. The mini kitchen allowed us to make breakfast in the room and sit on the large balcony watching the boats as we relaxed in our hotel provided robes sipping our coffee and munching on our toast. The nearby Galleria Mall has all the national shops as well as major department stores. The restaurant has a nationally recognized chef and the food is superb. We look forward to a longer stay at this hotel in the near future.

We checked in late Friday night (around 12:40 am), My wife had called them 2 days earlier about our flight timings. The concierge behaved as if he was doing us a huge favor by letting us check-in. He mentioned he was about to cancel our reservation since we were late. When we told him, that we had called two days ago - he shrugs his shoulders, makes a crooked face and tells us no one told him. Thats the last thing a tired and sleepy guest (who has paid for the room in full in advance) needs to hear. A smile and welcome would have done fine.

We booked the hotel after looking at the pictures on website. Those photos are misleading. The views are nothing like that and those photos make you think the hotel is close to the ocean - well its not and your view is blocked by an array of tall buildings (you can get a glimpse of ocean between them). I then checked other beach front hotels and they have similar rooms at a slightly higher price - these rooms are certainly overpriced for their location.

The room facilities were okay, and rooms were clean. The swimming pool is micro sized. The corridors are small, the lobby is unimpressive. There are very few in house facilities.

Our microwave broke down (which I can understand, stuff breaks down sometimes). The lady at the desk assured us it will be replaced the next day. It was never replaced. We were going to check-out on a Tuesday and the guest manual mentioned that they generally accommodate late checkouts on non busy days and when your flight is a bit late. The other day the concierge mentioned it would be okay, however when we called them on morning if we could have a late checkout by an hour they mentioned it would be half rate for the day. This was disappointing, we travel a lot and have generally found the staff at other places helpful in such cases. Small things like these make you feel welcome - especially after you were not made feel welcome when you were checking in.

Bottomline: Overpriced for the facilities, staff is cold to rude, the view is bad (misleading photos on website). I would recommend avoiding it.

For such a upscale hotel you would expec upscale service. Not so at il lugano. Everything was a wait and difficult. Free continental breakfast was a joke. Every morning you had to ask someone for a card to receive your complimentary breakfast. No turn down service even when I asked for wet towels to be picked up . I was told that someone would be there for service. The pool boy could never be found for a towel . Pool is in the shade and the jacuzzi could use some clean up . Way to overpriced for the service that you get. Nothing special

I Can't speak highly enough about the INSIDE design and decor of this hotel - it truly left me breathless. However, when we drove up, I was quite concerned - wanted to drive off .... The area surrounding the hotel is quite lacking, scary in fact (looks abandoned); even the front-exterior of the Il Lugano Hotel could use a lot of TLC ... but walk into the lobby and suddenly one has walked through hell's gates and straight into heaven ... the rear of the hotel (on waterway) looked as if right out of a scene from 'Miami-Vice'; Our room was spectacular, spacious - included a kitchen, a small seating/den area, a 'bedroom nook' and fabulous balcony overlooking the Intercoastal Waterway. My only complaint, again ... housekeeping services. As my husband and I were, shall we say ... having an 'intimate-moment' ... someone entered our room unannounced (turns out, it was housekeeping). I was quite shaken by this and in fact contacted the front desk to tell them someone had attempted to enter our room (actually did enter, but also exited quickly as we both yelled quite loudly due to FRIGHT).-------->>> It was at this time, after the fact, that we were told by the front desk that it was only someone coming in to turn-down our bedding!!!! <<<--------- I would give Il Lugano 5 stars if not for this event - I would suggest that hotel services FIRST inform guests that a bedding turn-down service is provided and TWO give guests the opportunity to OPT-IN or OPT-OUT of turn-down!!Staff, Housekeeping .... anyone for that matter (no matter what time or for what purpose) entering a guests room unannounced is an accident of epic proportions just waiting to happen!

This is long overdue, but I didn't want my experience at the Il Lugano to go unreviewed. The hotel is in a new building that sits right on the intracoastal, about two blocks from the beach. The immediate area is not the nicest (some 70s-style retirement hi-rises, a strip mall, etc.), so you're not in the "thick" of Fort Lauderdale nightlife. Still, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better deal or a nicer hotel. The apartments (these aren't just simple rooms) are impeccable, each with a balcony, fully-stocked kitchen, washer and dryer and large bathroom. The toiletries provided are nothing short of AMAZING. So honestly, this is one of the best places I've stayed in a while, and I'm really picky. The staff was very friendly, The decor in the public areas was a little too "Miami Vice" for me, but the lobby area is clean and includes a bar. We wanted to eat at the restaurant, but didn't have a chance -- heard only good things about it from other guests, though. There is on-site valet parking available for a fee, but there is also plenty of parking around the hotel. My only real complaint would be about the pool, which is relatively small. When we were there, it was crowded and kind of gross -- long hairs floating around in the water, greasy oil sitting on top of the water, abandoned cups around the pool area. Can't really blame the hotel because their guests didn't follow basic rules re: bathing in a public pool, but still...

Maybe you'll have more luck. In any case, you should definitely give it a try. And if you don't like the pool, the beach is just a 2-minute walk away.

We stayed 4 nights in a Lugano Suite with Intercoastal view. We loved the modern decor, kitchenette, the Bose sound system and especially the private balcony over looking the intercoastal. We spent every afternoon relaxing on lounge chairs in privacy and comfort on the roomy balcony catching the afternoon sun and watching the boating traffic..The bed was very comfortable and linens soft. Free wireless was appreciated, since most high end hotels charge a fee. The staff was friendly and helpful. The Todd English restaraunt in the hotel is a must-impeccable food and service. There are a few small restaurants and bars within a short walking distance from the hotel which were adequate.
