“Return to Il Lugano”
Reviewed March 8, 2013

We have just completed a two week stay at Il Lugano. Two years ago, for a similar time period, we had an ocean view room but realized that the better view is actually facing the inland waterway. That perspective allows you to watch the many boats, large and small, pass below as you pick your favorites. A glass of wine (from nearby Walgreen's liquor store) is a must for watching the sun go down. We had a two room suite on the tenth floor. The main room had a pull-out sofa, tables, etc., large TV, computer desk (wifi in room), table and four chairs, plus the kitchenette. It had a two-burner countertop, dishwasher, fullsize fridge/freezer, spacious island with stools and adequate dishes -ask for things you might need such as pots and pans. A stacked washer/ dryer was conveniently provided in its own closet and detergent and dryer softener were provided. The separate bedroom was huge with a good sized ensuite.
Our balcony ran past the two rooms and was accessible from both. A Winn/Dixie is a pleasant walk along the Galt Mile nad Publix is on Oakland Park but a car would be necessary for that.
We found the staff to be friendly, professional and very helpful, if needed. The location on the Intracoastal waterway is quietly peaceful. The walk to the beach is indeed about 10 minutes but it is flat and there are several traffic lights for easy crossing of A1A. Public access to the beach at L'Hermitage condo building is the closest and showers are there for rinsing sand off before walking back. Beach towels may be picked up at the front desk at Il Lugano or at the pool. We walked for miles on the beach. Going north to the pier at Lauderdale by the Sea results in breakfast or just coffee at the small restaurant at the head of the pier. Again, a shower station as you come off the beach. Going south on the beach, you can justify an any time of day flatbread at the beachside restaurant at Sun Towers. An absolute must, however, is an ice cream in the little shop inside The Pelican Grand hotel. The walk back can be on the beach or one of the residential streets (very flat and sheltered). Anyone in a wheelchair could experience these walks as the sidewalks are spacious and flat and there are several public access parks with benches on the seawall for soaking in the sound of the surf. The heated pool at Il Lugano also has the device which assists someone into the pool if required. A thoughtful addition.
We chose not to bother with a car! We learned that 85 cents could get a senior to Las Olas for shopping and restaurants and the Broward Centre for various events or a stroll on the Riverwalk. That is the #11 bus. The #36 will turn onto Sunrise Blvd. and stop at the Galleria Mall. The schedules are on line. The water taxi is a way to spend a slow day on the water but, because it is hop on/ hop off, you can really stretch a day pass. Its most northerly stop is just adjacent to the Il Lugano pool; however, this stop is an extended request stop -there is a number to phone and the front desk will help re schedules, etc. Again, all that is online so come prepared. The Sun Trolley provides free ride around the area, as well, but we found the city buses to be more predictable for our needs.
The Blue Moon Fish Company restaurant in Lauderdale by the Sea has an amazing ($49) Sunday brunch. The Charter House is nearby for lunch literally on the water.
Il Lugano was an excellent choice for a long stay. It is slightly tucked away but that just makes the location special.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the Intracoastal Waterway and as high as possible are best. Sun in the afternoon and su...

totally enjoyed the stay, used the trolley in front of hotel to get around all over the area. Property very clean and well maintained, about 10 minute walk to beach. quiet area and caters more to an older crowd. The shuttle from the Lugano is very useful. Definitely enjoyed my stay and will be coming back again.

Good: The suite we stayed in (cheapest they had) was very large and clean. Bed was comfortable and the kitchenette was nicely furnished.

Average: The location is not great. It's a good 10min walk from the beach and the public beach area is extremely small and narrow. Better options for less price are available further south. It's also located in the no man's land between Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and the Lauderdale beach area. So there are a few restaurants and shops around, but a fairly limited variety within walking distances.

Bad: The service. Hotel website and all the literature in the actual room claimed a noon checkout. Upon checking in I was told 11am checkout. When I went back down to the lobby to ask about this discrepancy the front desk worker pretended to type in stuff into her computer and then said "it looks like we can accommodate a noon check out for you." That's good since that's what you advertise.

Also upon check in I was told that my room was not yet ready but that there were upgrades available for $40 a night. When I passed on this deal, suddenly our original room became available. This sort of tactic is just small and petty and makes the whole place seem unprofessional. Really going to try and squeeze another $40 a night out of us by pretending our room was not yet ready? We were staying in Feb from Wed-Fri. Really got a full hotel on a Wed. night in Feb?

One of the amenities that they provide is transportation within 3 miles on a first come first serve basis. On the first day I wanted to go the Walgreens that is 3 blocks away. It was raining pretty heavily so I asked if I could get a ride. The Escalade they use was parked out front and there was 2 valet workers, a concierge, and 2 front desk attendants. I was told "that it would be a few minutes." Seeing all of the workers I assumed this meant that they would just have to wrap something up and we'd be good to go. So I just stayed in the lobby and read a book. 30min later the rain let up (did not stop) and I decided to just walk it. When I told the concierge this she snapped back with a "do you have to go like right this second?" Right this second? I'd been waiting 30min without 1 person telling me what the status was. They were just all joking around. One of the male workers was pretending to propose to a couple of the older female workers and they were just enjoying the attention. When I told her I didn't need to go this second but was just going to walk it anyway, I got a "it'll only be like 15 more min". No explanation of why it would be 15 min, just this random time frame. I guess it was my fault for bothering her on her day off.

The hotel is 10min from the beach so they state on their website that they have a 10 passenger shuttle that will take you to and from the public access. No surprise that when my wife and I asked for a ride to the beach we were told that the bus they use was not available. We were told it was at "the state department." i don't even know what that means, but it became a great running joke for my wife and I the rest of the trip.

On the second day we wanted a ride to a restaurant that was 2 miles away. Well within they promised transportation range. It would be a 5min ride or a 30min walk. This was at 11:25am. When we asked for the ride we were told that they could not accommodation because they had a 12:00pm pick up to make. They couldn't give us a 5min ride (as advertised) because they were booked 35min later. Even though its "first come first serve". Absolutely ridiculous.

The pool was also terrible. Extremely small and located within 2 ft of the side of the building. The proximity of the building meant the pool was shaded the entire day. The pool was heated, however the hot tub was not. And there is a strange fountain dumping room temperature water into the hot tub from about a 3ft drop. This makes it impossible to sit anywhere in the hot tub without having splashing constantly hitting your face. Imagine just holding a garden hose 3ft above a pool of water and sitting right next to the splash point. Relaxing.

Overall: The room size and quality is great, so if you don't require any service or basic courtesy then have it. Otherwise do yourself a favor and book elsewhere.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The staff was great, very friendly, and the amenities were good. My only wish would be that it would be closer to the beach. But for the price we paid I won't complain. I plan on coming back next year!

The facilities, room and service were top notch considering the price we paid. We booked an Oceanview King Studio and got upgraded to an Oceanview Suite. Wish we could've stayed longer than the one night - we were just passing through.

Locationwise it's not within walking distance to the major hubs of Ft. Lauderdale nor any decent stretches of beach. By car it's about 5 - 10 min. away from either the beachfront patios of Commerce Blvd. or bustling nightlife of Las Olas.

Overall if you're just looking for a place to rest your head, Il Lugano is an excellent hotel by its own merit. If you're looking to discover Ft. Lauderdale, it may not be the most convenient location as a base, unless you don't mind driving.

The hotel is dirty! The carpet in our room and through hallway is rippled and badly stained. The receptionist was very rude when we checked in! All the other staff are pleasant! The pool is tiny and has all day shade! There are only a few cabanas in the sun and they are always taken. We only used this hotel to sleep! Expensive nights sleep!

We just returned from a four day visit. The hotel is beautiful and the jr. Suite we had was great. The balcony looking out over the intracoastal was one of the reasons we selected the hotel. It is not convenient to the beach and like much of the area, the small shopping district around the hotel had lots of vacancies. We found the staff attentive and very available. It is a short walk to restaurants on the water as well as the water taxi stops. If you do not need to be on the beach, this is a great place to stay.
