We have just completed a two week stay at Il Lugano. Two years ago, for a similar time period, we had an ocean view room but realized that the better view is actually facing the inland waterway. That perspective allows you to watch the many boats, large and small, pass below as you pick your favorites. A glass of wine (from nearby Walgreen's liquor store) is a must for watching the sun go down. We had a two room suite on the tenth floor. The main room had a pull-out sofa, tables, etc., large TV, computer desk (wifi in room), table and four chairs, plus the kitchenette. It had a two-burner countertop, dishwasher, fullsize fridge/freezer, spacious island with stools and adequate dishes -ask for things you might need such as pots and pans. A stacked washer/ dryer was conveniently provided in its own closet and detergent and dryer softener were provided. The separate bedroom was huge with a good sized ensuite.
Our balcony ran past the two rooms and was accessible from both. A Winn/Dixie is a pleasant walk along the Galt Mile nad Publix is on Oakland Park but a car would be necessary for that.
We found the staff to be friendly, professional and very helpful, if needed. The location on the Intracoastal waterway is quietly peaceful. The walk to the beach is indeed about 10 minutes but it is flat and there are several traffic lights for easy crossing of A1A. Public access to the beach at L'Hermitage condo building is the closest and showers are there for rinsing sand off before walking back. Beach towels may be picked up at the front desk at Il Lugano or at the pool. We walked for miles on the beach. Going north to the pier at Lauderdale by the Sea results in breakfast or just coffee at the small restaurant at the head of the pier. Again, a shower station as you come off the beach. Going south on the beach, you can justify an any time of day flatbread at the beachside restaurant at Sun Towers. An absolute must, however, is an ice cream in the little shop inside The Pelican Grand hotel. The walk back can be on the beach or one of the residential streets (very flat and sheltered). Anyone in a wheelchair could experience these walks as the sidewalks are spacious and flat and there are several public access parks with benches on the seawall for soaking in the sound of the surf. The heated pool at Il Lugano also has the device which assists someone into the pool if required. A thoughtful addition.
We chose not to bother with a car! We learned that 85 cents could get a senior to Las Olas for shopping and restaurants and the Broward Centre for various events or a stroll on the Riverwalk. That is the #11 bus. The #36 will turn onto Sunrise Blvd. and stop at the Galleria Mall. The schedules are on line. The water taxi is a way to spend a slow day on the water but, because it is hop on/ hop off, you can really stretch a day pass. Its most northerly stop is just adjacent to the Il Lugano pool; however, this stop is an extended request stop -there is a number to phone and the front desk will help re schedules, etc. Again, all that is online so come prepared. The Sun Trolley provides free ride around the area, as well, but we found the city buses to be more predictable for our needs.
The Blue Moon Fish Company restaurant in Lauderdale by the Sea has an amazing ($49) Sunday brunch. The Charter House is nearby for lunch literally on the water.
Il Lugano was an excellent choice for a long stay. It is slightly tucked away but that just makes the location special.
