El Tamarindo is one of those hidden, local gems that you hope NEVER goes 'hollywood" because it is absolutely perfect the way it is! I was visiting Ft. Lauderdale on business over the weekend and asked a friend for a Cuban or El Salvadorian restaurant recommendation. Not only was El Tamarindo, an El Salvadorian cafe, at the top of my friend's list, but it was also recommended by our hotel. We headed over on a Saturday afternoon around 6pm, which was perfect timing before the dinner rush. We ordered seafood paello which was TO DIE FOR!! Brimming with a fresh, delicious array of calamari and shrimp, the dish was topped off with a large prawn and a WHOLE blue crab! This meal was absolutely perfect - very fresh and tasty without overwhelming seasoning or overcooking. On top of the meal itself, the ambiance and the service were delightful. Our server, "Edgar Allen Poe" was the absolute BEST server I've had in a very long time. He was both personable as well as conscientous in ensuring that our meals were to our satisfaction. I highly recommend this spot and will definitely visit again when I'm in the area.

We found the reviews for this place to be the top in the area that suited our desire for cuban food. Everything was amazing, the chicharron w/ Fried Yuca was some of the best i have had. Same goes for the pupusa lorelta, so GOOD! Then comes the main dish, my girlfriend orders a Cuban Sandwich, which wasnt on the menu but they accommodated and the Chef created something AMAZING! Traditional cuban bread, hearty portions of chunks of superbly seasoned pork, Grilled onions over perfectly melted swiss cheese over REAL HAM SLICES, not cold cuts but i reapeat REAL HAM SLICES! After placing spoonfuls of the chimichurri sauce all over it was the DEFINING example of perfection of what a Cuban Sandwich should be. So if you are in the mood for some of the tastiest Spanish Cuban cuisine around hit up The Tamarindo Cafe

The restaurant is located on a main road and shouldn't be missed for good food that isn't exactly Cuban but will do.

We ordered the wings to start...which were grilled and served with fries and onions. They were fresh and tasty and a nice departure from the typical fried and BBQ lathered wings that you usually get.

My husband had the Churassco (he said it was ok) and I had the Carne Asada, it was very good (full disclosure--I'm only a carnivore on vacation). The rice was questionable, but manageable. It wasn't yellow or white--something in between but again passable. The beans were tender- although could have used a little more sazon for my taste.

A must have is the Tamarind Juice and the Sangria (white) was also delicious. Dessert was hit or miss. The coconut flan ranked with the best, but the chocolate cake was "dry" (as described by my husband).

All and all, the decor was nice. Good size bar. Good service and very reasonable. $50 for two adults and a 3 year old - who loves to eat.

Stop by and give them a try.

We were transiting Fort Lauderdale on our way to the Bahamas and our taxi driver recommend this restaurant. It is virtually across the street from West Marine's flagship store so after visiting West Marine we went to El Tamarindo Cafe for lunch. The ambiance was upscale and the service was excellent. We had a typical Cuban style lunch of fried red snapper, amarillos (fried green plantains) and rice and beans. An outstanding meal! We ate so much we skipped dinner that evening :-). This restaurant is unpresupposing from the street and might put you off, but the restaurant is excellent and we will recommend it enthusiastically to our friends.
