Three stars (average) might be a bit generous, but 2 stars (poor) would be too harsh..so let's call it 2.5 stars. I booked this room for the nights before and after a cruise. I selected this hotel for it's close proximity to the cruise port, free shuttle transfer to and from the airport and cruise port, free WiFi, free continental breakfast and attractive rates. So here's how it turned out...
GOOD - I booked the room through Expedia and got a real good rate. It is very convenient/close to both the cruise port and airport, avoiding most traffic and eliminating any concerns about arriving at either on time. The hotel contracts it's shuttle service to a local company, who were prompt and courteous. Service at the check-in counter was friendly, considering how busy they really were. The rooms were reasonably clean and no evidence of smoking.
NOT SO GOOD - The building is old, with exterior doorways to rooms. Each of the rooms are cooled/heated with individual floor units, which drain condensed water onto the carpeted walkways outside. So rain or not, I ended up sloshing my way from the lobby to the second floor (both nights) with rolling luggage in tow. The roof of the hotel is flat and surely in need of repair. The night prior to cruise departure, I noticed water seemed to be dripping from the walkway overhangs, even though it hadn't rained in the last 48 hours. My suspicions were confirmed on the night following the cruise, when we found obvious water damage in the ceiling and adjacent wall, which could lead to mold-related issues, although I didn't observe any myself. One other knit-picky note is the height of the shower heads, mounted at roughly 5 feet, which I found awkward at 6'2".
POOR - The continental breakfast consisted of bagel/toast, grits and a piece of fruit. Coffee, milk and orange-flavored kool-aid were the options to wash it all down. If you're willing to pay an additional $5 per person, you can upgrade your breakfast to include sausage, eggs and hashbrowns, which were not so bad, but I was not happy to learn this was only available for an extra charge.
SUMMARY - Personally, the hotel served its purpose. So if you're just passing through Ft Lauderdale or need a place to crash for a night before/after your cruise, give it a try...except if you have allergies to mold, in which case I would avoid staying at all (just to be safe).
