I'm in the biz. I work for (arguably) the top hotel in Key West. I get to stay at some of the nicest hotels in the US at an employee rate. If you are looking for a top hotel, this is not the place for you. I however, like getting to stay in the funky, neat little motels that are disappearing at a rapid rate all over Florida.
What you get: Remodeled motel. The rooms are clean. Nice mattress (I have an expensive bed in my home, and I remarked at how comfy the bed was). Clean sheets. Down comforter. Clean bath and shower. Cable T.V. The Miami Herald delivered to your door each morning. Modern lock system on the doors. Safe in the closet.
The pool is heated and decent size...plenty of chairs.
Small Tiki bar with fun barmaid Berni. Cigarette machine. 2 free drinks at check-in. Grey Goose is $5 (At the Hyatt in Key West you'd pay $13…my hotel you'd pay $8).
Ample parking. Short drive to the beach (1 mile?)
Ruth Chris's steak house 1 block away. Target across the street. Primanti Bros pizza a few blocks away (some of the best pizza in the U.S.)
Staff was fun and smiling. Locals drinking at the bar. Flat screen tv's at bar and under tiki hut.
Cool bar around the corner (Wayward Sailor) feels like your Grandpas Florida.
Now,. that said, don’t take your honeymoon here. Don’t...I'm in the biz. I work for (arguably) the top hotel in Key West. I get to stay at some of the nicest hotels in the US at an employee rate. Now,. that said, don’t take your honeymoon here. Don’t show up with champagne tastes on a beer budget.
Do expect to have fun...and you will.
Also...TIP your breakfast servers. I watched 30 people eat all kinds of goodies, and maybe 2 people tipped. To our European friends…if you are in our country, play the game. The servers make $3 and hour to brew your coffee, and put out and refresh all the food. Even if you feel like it's self serve and you shouldn't tip, a lot goes on behind the scenes that you don't see. Come off a buck or 2.
I will stay here again.
