We are lovers of flea markets/antique fairs, and try to hit one or two where ever we go....so we were very excited to go to the "Swap Shop" in Fort Lauderdale.
What we found was a huge parking lot filled with junk---not antiques or interesting stuff, but dirty, old (again, not antique) junk.
Stuff you would find if you went into a poor neighborhood and went to a yard sale. Stuff that was junk when it was new, but now is old and used and dirty.
One stall had a some nursery lamps from the 50's that were charming but I was amazed at the garbage that was being sold.
The other piece that bothered me was the two Pet Stores that were selling all sorts of birds and puppies and hamsters to folks that looked like the last thing they, or their kids needed or had the resoursed to buy and care for, were more pets.
It was depressing to see.
But on a better note, attached to the swap shop is a fair and open market. The market was wonderful and sold fresh fruit and veggies at very low cost.
Attached was an area with rides for kids. The tickets were priced well and my 4 yr old twins had a blast, riding ride after ride.
It made up for the wasted time, wandering around the junk store in the back!
All in all, if you don't have small kids who will enjoy an afternoon of riding rides, I would skip this one!

If you have never been to a Drive In Movie, or enjoyed them during your childhood, visiting the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop is a MUST!! What could be better than watching a movie from the comfort of your own car. The sound comes right through the radio. You can bring whatever goodies you want to eat - or buy something from the roving carts or many snack bars. Enjoy a first run movie too! During the day nothing beats all the vendors at the Swap Shop! Anything you can think of will be sold there. Get there early for the best selection. Afterwards take a peak inside the main building at all the beautiful race cars. They are spectacular!!

My parents visited the Swap Shop on 1/31/13 during there vacation. While shopping in open public, my mother was attacked from behind, knocked unconsious, battered and robbed. She is now recovering in the hospital with a fractured pelvis and multiple non-life threatening injuries. It took Swap Shop security 30-40 minutes to respond to our request for emergency assistance. This took place at 10:30 a.m., in broad daylight with multiple witnesses watching. The criminals simply ran away and escaped. For 30 minutes my mom lay on the pavement without any assistance from any representative from the swap shop. Although the police responded, no representative from the swap shop has contacted us about the incident. At the local hospital, multiple staff have told us the swap shop is unsafe and crime ridden...that was our experience. My mom could have easily been killed in the assault - it's so terrible. I can tell you that security was ineffective, unresponsive, and completely unhelpful. Be safe - don't visit if you're a tourist or otherwise concerned about your safety. (Fully one week later and no follow up from anyone at the swap shop.)

This was my first drive in movie. The facility has about 9-10 screens and is well marked and laid out. Projection is clean and audio broadcast strong. Can't ask for anything more from a movie experience. They have a golf cart driveing around selling snacks. Missed the beginning of Skyfall but was able to stay into the next screening to catch the part I missed at no charge. Didn't check out the flea market.

Very interesting for a flea market. Many vendors are there year round and are asking retail prices. You begin to feel like you are walking on a hamster wheel as you keep seeing the same things over and over again. The outdoor area is much more like a traditional flea market with individuals selling their stuff. We probably got there on the late side - suggest you start early.
