The Bonnet House shows the visitor what it was to live in early Ft. Lauderdale. In addition, many special events are offered, i.e., Young Artists Concerts from Florida Grand Opera.

I was reluctant to pay the $20 fee at first, unsure how looking at an historic house could be worth that much, but I was SO wrong. It is so much more than I expected and much more than seeing a preserved historic home. I more that got my money's worth, and ending up staying and seeing everything for several hours.
You don't just look through the house, it's a guided tour that lasts about an hour and a half. I was thinking, what could they possibly say for an hour and be interesting, well it is so much more than just telling about the house, art, and furnishings. It was a riveting story that kept me glued to attention. The tour guides are extremely knowledgable about the house, the history, the people, and the era; they make the time and the people come alive to you with enthusiasm, facts and very interesting ancedotes. They talked non-stop the whole time and never got boring or tedious.
The house is just the icing on the fabulous gardens and grounds surrounding the estate, with 35 acres of non-stop beauty. There are several very different types of gardens and natural areas, beautiful old trees, gorgeous walking paths, scenic ponds, amazing outdoor patio-terrace-living areas.
I was so knocked over by this stop, it was so worth it, I am so glad I did not pass it up or decide it was too much money for the value. Our guide said at one point it was the best tourist site in town and I have to totally agree with him as far as cultural attractions go, this is the best place I have seen in Fort Lauderdale. I can't think of anything I would recommend more highly that you can do during the day!
Do yourself a favor, allow plenty of time, wear comfortable walking shoes, and relax, enjoy the experience when your not rushed. It is plenty of walking and standing time, so be prepared...they also offer cart tours for those who can't or don't want to walk...and they have a gift shop too.

What a beautiful place to see and a beautiful love story to hear. Tropical plants and orchids as well as monkeys in the trees. This home was a real treat to visit and what a treasure nesteled away on Fort Lauderdale Beach. What a beautiful place for a wedding.

The grounds and the building are full of little pleasures--neat plants and garden areas, paintings and other art, neat building, interesting family stories: a very good experience.
