“Orange Bowl Stay”
Reviewed January 6, 2012

It is interesting reading the various reviews of this hotel especially the most recent. One could get an impression that this hotel is not good. However, my family recently spent two nights, Jan 3/4 and had a pleasant stay. Overall impressions: service was excellent, despite recent reviews (we own a restaurant and pride ourselves on evaluating service) from the valet attendants to the bellman staff to the concierge desk. All were extremely polite and were good conversationalist that made you feel at home. Upon check-in we received a free upgrade and and our rooms were exactly as we requested--two adjoining rooms. Our first night it was extremely cold for the region, mid 40s, and the room was quite chilly (low 60s) , but since the hotel is not equipped for heating of rooms this was to be expected, but the staff quickly sent us a space heater, within 10 mins, which adequately heated our room for the night. The hotel design reflects an older architecture but the styling is updated throughout most of the hotel. However, one complaint is that the hallway flooring in the East building is worn and needs replaced. The rooms have excellent bedding and furnishings. The shower had great water pressure and temperature. The fitness facility is small but has a great view of the ocean. Overall, for the price, we were very satisfied with our selection of the Westin and would return in the future.

Room Tip: Request a high floor for great views of the ocean and the lack of noise

Fort Lauderdale can only be experienced to its fullest potential by staying at a hotel on the beach. On this vacation we chose The Westin Beach Resort & Spa, Fort Lauderdale as our Pre-Cruise launching location. We have stayed at many hotels in Fort Lauderdale, but we keep coming back to the beach!

This was our first ever visit to The Westin Beach Resort & Spa, Fort Lauderdale, and my wife and I liked it. The hotel is within walking distance to the Galleria Mall and all of the restraunts on the strip.

The Hotel was clean, and smelled very nice. Its decor was very modern. Our room was an Ocean Front room with a King bed, spacious, clean and a great view. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was large with a fantastic shower. The odd thing was the shutters on the bathroom window that looks out into the room.

I highly recommend this hotel as the staff was very helpful and corteous, bending over backwards to assist us.

The best part...Starbucks in the lobby of the South Tower. I recommend staying in the North Tower as this is the Tower with the pool. The pool is big and the pool staff are very attentive.

More importantly, there is a Publix around the corner and a CVS pharmacy that sells wine and beer down the street!!!!

Go there, have fun!

Room Tip: Make sure you ask to stay in the North Tower.

The Westin in Fort Lauderdale is beautiful. The rooms are extremely nice and comfortable however they run on the smaller side but the amenities make up for that. The pool has an elevator to the beach so you do not have to walk across the street and the view from the pool top is incredible. A great stay highly recommended. I dream of going back soon.

Room Tip: Suggest a high level floor with a larger room.

My wife and I stayed at the Westin Beach Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale on Dec 28-31st, 2011. The hotel is on the site of the former Sheraton Yankee Trader hotel.

The Westin hotel was very clean, and well maintained for a beach front resort. Our king room was nicely sized, and had a really large glass shower. The room had a flat screen TV, desk and desk-chair, but seemed to be missing a chair for relaxing.

The view -- a concrete wall of the parking structure -- from Rm #642 was awful, but I can't complain, since we scored this room for an unbelievable price of $125/nt on Hotwire.

The pool and surrounding deck area was really nice. The water was heated to a very comfortable temp. There is a pedestrian bridge + elevator to easy beach access. The ocean facing exercise room was well equipped.

Breakfast at Shula's was great -- the oceanfront patio and views are among the best in the area.

My only [minor] complaint is the $25/day valet only parking -- though I guess it's the going rate for South FL beachfront hotels.

Room Tip: Get an ocean front room on a high floor.

Dear ifly747s: We read your review and were very excited to hear you had such a fabulous stay with us over the holidays. We appreciate your compliments about our guestroom amenities, food and beverage service, and mezzanine level pool deck. Our outdoor skywalk is very convenient for guests, as it takes you directly from the pool to the soft sands of the Fort Lauderdale Beach without having to cross over A1A. We look forward to welcoming you back to beautiful and refreshing beachfront retreat!

The decor is very nice and gives the place a very beachy pleasant feeling. The location is right on the beach and there is a nice pool as well. No complaints.

This hotel is not at all up to Westin standards. It is a dated, older hotel that has been half-heartedly remodeled to have a Westin look. On top of it, the service here is not just sub-par, it is horrible. Finally, there are safety\security issues.

My wife and I have stayed at a number of Westin's and a number of South Florida hotels, and this one is simply not up to par.

The service staff did not make up our room for the entire 4 day stay, the manager did not speak English well and was rude when we complained about the service. Finally, our room was accessed by a "security" person while we were in the room -- and the person would not tell us why they were accessing the room. Persoanlly, we felt the person was coming in to use the facilities. Gross, but unfortunately a reality at this hotel.

We have stayed at a lot of Westin's and have come to expect a certain level of quality and service, this particular stay meet neither of those expectations. The staff at the pool was very slow and unresponsive. The concierge was border line rude when we asked about buying a deck of cards. I'm sure catching them on the day after new years was not ideal. The hotel location and facility was very nice, but based on out experience I might give the Ritz Carlton a shot, we went there for dinner and had a great time.
