Whale Watch Motel
Ranked #6 of 12 Flagler Beach B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 28, 2009

My boyfriend and I "planned" a trip to no where in particular this past weekend - we live at the beach in Jacksonville so we just wanted something different. Not having a destination made for an interesting weekend: After beginning at the Tomoka camp grounds & deciding that wasn't it, we headed up A1A & decided Flagler seemed like the civilized, yet quiet, place we wanted to be.

We noticed that the Whale Watch motel had a vacancy sign so we stopped to inquire. There was a note on the office door that stated the rooms were being cleaned & to walk around to look for the open room door - the property owner was the one preparing the rooms. Once we found Barry (the owner) he explained that he had only one room left that was next to be cleaned. He allowed us to peek inside & we then followed him to the office to make it ours for the night.

It began & ended perfectly. The room was very clean & charming (old Florida style), the pool was perfectly sized, & the beach was 20 ft from our room's door. In case you're unprepared (as we were) they will provide beach towels, toys & chairs & are also pet friendly. While this isn't a 5 star hotel resort, it was exactly what we were looking for - rural, friendly, quiet, accommodating & relaxing. Plenty of dining options within a couple miles, a great pier with an even better beach - 20+ yards with no one else around - for $80 per nite.

We feel like we've found our quick-get-away spot from here on out.

I stayed at the Whale Watch on the week-end of June 5, 2009 with my daughter and her two children ages 9 and 10. We had a standard room which we loved (room 5). I had requested a microwave and there was one in the room when we arrived. The refrigerator was the perfect size and there was a coffee maker with fresh coffee everyday. Our view of the ocean was spectacular. The room was very clean and Barry was quick to accommodate us with whatever we needed. Even though there were other people there we felt very private and most of the time we had the beach and the pool to ourselves. I will definitely go back and would recommend the Whale Watch to anyone looking for "Old Florida charm" It doesn't get any better than this.

The Whale Watch is the perfect place to get away from everything. We were looking for solitude, peace and quiet, a laid back environment with friendly locals and THIS IS IT.
Even the OWNER was laid back, peaceful and quiet. He was so friendly, we invited him in for a Corona and a lime! Perfect host.

We called ahead to tell him we would be ariving late and he was waiting there after dark to show us to our room. Everything was clean and the kitchen even had coffee ready for us. and sweetner. and creamer.

During our stay, we made friends with an older canadian couple and thier giant dog. We shared dog pictures and a good time was had by all. It was even quiet during datona bikefest.

If you walk across the street, you can take your cup of coffee and sit on a balcony overlooking the beach and watch the waves roll in at sunrise. If you walk left along the beach for about a mile, theres a great fishing pier. Good restaurant there too.

we'll be coming back and when we do , i may just try that $20 bill test Barry was talking about. "you could tape a 20 dollar bill to the front door and it would still be there in the morning."

Everything was exactly as advertised and did i mention the owners are friendly?

We stayed at the Whale Watch for 4 days and 3 nights last week and really had a great time. The room was clean and the bed very comfortable even though it was a queen and we sleep on a king at home. I usually have an allergic reaction to products used to clean motel rooms and detergent used on the bedding and have to take medication while staying there. I did not have any problem with my allergies at this motel didn't even have to use the sheets I had taken with us to use instead of sleeping on their sheets .
Yes , this is an older Florida motel but my goodness it is directly across from the beach which isn't much more than a stone throw away!!!! We sat on the porch and watched the sunrise and sunset each day we were there and the other guest were out there with us and everyone had a good time hanging out . We took our little dog with us and there were dog biscuits on the pillow for her when we arrived !! She enjoyed her stay there too cause she was able to stay in the room with us every day.
This motel was just what we were looking for and we will definately go back again. Barry and Patricia were great host and Barry even helped unload our car when we arrived. It was just a super place to get away. Anyone who complains about this motel doesn't know or understand the true value of staying in a small mom and pop type motel instead of a big motel chain. It was just so NEAT people actually sat and talked to each other and made new friends instead of avoiding each other.
Thanks again for a great time and we hope to see you again soon.
Oh by the way, sorry to say we didn't see any Whales this trip . Maybe next time. :)

I stay at the "Whale" every chance I get when I am visiting in the area. Where else can you walk for miles and have the beach all to yourself. Where else can you open the door and watch the sun rise over the ocean practically in your lap. Laid back with lots of privacy and room to roam along the shore.
If you have simple tastes and treasure location over glitz. If you want value over high priced, carpeted ,concrete ant hills, then this is the place to drop anchor!
And last but not least, you can enjoy it with your family pet. Yes, they are dog friendly. ps. Great place for kayak fun.

We booked this hotel for the 27th and the 28th.We arrived about 930pm when we got there one of the owners showed us to the cottage number 10. We walked in rust was over all the appliances walls were dirty paint was peeling off the walls doors and window blinds full of dirt. The ac unit was rusty and for the bedroom no door for privacy just a curtain. Three hours after we got there with the kids and our 2 dogs we got a phone call we needed to return to orlando asap the was an emergency with my mother. we contacted the owners and the guy who owns the place sayed he would have to charge is 179.00 for t hat friday and then half a day for saturday saying he would loose money knowing we had left then we asked for a receipt he said because we were in a rush he wrote out a sticky note saying paid in full. what hotel does this. then saying if he would rent the room saturday he would credit our credit card. i called the next day saying who charges someone 179.00 for 3 hours then charges for a half a day we would not be there. Because he would loose money. a little advice never book a room till you see it.This place needs a lot of attention the owners live across from the place and clearly they dont live like this, but they would rent something like this for a 100.00 a night.

WhaleWatchMotel, Owner (along with the bank) at Whale Watch Motel, responded to this reviewResponded April 1, 2009

These guests (2 adults, 2 kids, 3 dogs) booked a cottage for a Friday and Saturday night. They arrived 9:30 Friday night, were shown their accomodations, and said they would be fine. They did not complain or voice any concerns.

We normally close our office at 9:00 but received an urgent message on our phone system about midnight. We returned the call, determined it was urgent, and since we live on-site (not across the street), passed on the message in person and immediately. Our guests were relaxing in the room after a trip to the beach, obviously settled in for the evening. Once again, they didn't complain or voice any concerns about their accommodations. 10 minutes later the guests informed us that the emergency required them to leave.

We have a 72-hour cancellation policy, as these guest were informed when they made their reservations, and as is clearly stated on our website. Because of the unfortunate circumstances, we charged these guests only half-price for the 2nd day of their stay, and said we would refund that if we were able to book their room the next day. Their total charge was the standard rate of $99 for that night, plus the standard $15 pet fee, plus $49 for the 2nd day, plus tax, for a total of $179.00. Since they paid cash and refused to wait 3 minutes or us to generate a computer receipt, we wrote a hand written receipt at their demand. Although they didn't mention it in their review, we also generated a formal receipt for them, and mailed it the following day. We would happily have refunded the $49 charge for the 2nd day of their stay if we had been able to book their room. Unfortunately, most guests book cottages more than one day in advance, so we were not able to do that.

The Whale Watch is not a resort or a luxury property, and we don't claim to be. We are a clean, comfortable, reasonably priced mom-and-pop style motel at the beach. Being on the Atlantic ocean, the sea air does rust everything. The outsides of our refrigerators (none more than 8 years old) do have a few spots of rust, but the insides are pristine and cleaned with bleach after every guest. We could replace them every year, but think the vast majority of our guests would rather not pay more to finance cosmetic changes like this. The air conditioner in this room is less than 3 months old. The previous guests in the room had a dog, and the dog scratched the painted trim around the door. This goes with the territory when you are a pet-friendly property--we repair cosmetic issues like this as soon as possible.

If these guests were truly upset by the condition of their accommodations, instead of just having to pay for them, we suggest that they make reservations at a higher-end, more expensive property next time. We are truly sorry they had a family emergency, and hope things worked out well for them.

Not one of the fanciest places, but rooms were clean. Owners were very nice. It needs a little sprucing up, but the neighborhood is quiet. Not a place for spring breakers, but a place to feel comfortable and safe. The beach is very private and you can walk for a long ways before you see anyone. Nice getaway if you like things simple.
