My boyfriend and I "planned" a trip to no where in particular this past weekend - we live at the beach in Jacksonville so we just wanted something different. Not having a destination made for an interesting weekend: After beginning at the Tomoka camp grounds & deciding that wasn't it, we headed up A1A & decided Flagler seemed like the civilized, yet quiet, place we wanted to be.
We noticed that the Whale Watch motel had a vacancy sign so we stopped to inquire. There was a note on the office door that stated the rooms were being cleaned & to walk around to look for the open room door - the property owner was the one preparing the rooms. Once we found Barry (the owner) he explained that he had only one room left that was next to be cleaned. He allowed us to peek inside & we then followed him to the office to make it ours for the night.
It began & ended perfectly. The room was very clean & charming (old Florida style), the pool was perfectly sized, & the beach was 20 ft from our room's door. In case you're unprepared (as we were) they will provide beach towels, toys & chairs & are also pet friendly. While this isn't a 5 star hotel resort, it was exactly what we were looking for - rural, friendly, quiet, accommodating & relaxing. Plenty of dining options within a couple miles, a great pier with an even better beach - 20+ yards with no one else around - for $80 per nite.
We feel like we've found our quick-get-away spot from here on out.
