“Perfect base for exploring Everglades”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

Lovely relaxed place to stay with kids or without. Cottage was pretty although the decor is a little tired. Blissfully quiet - just the sounds of birds and wildlife. Pool made for a refreshing soak at the end of a day's paddling

Room Tip: We stayed in the Cottage but the rooms in the Lodge looked charming

My mother and I stayed overnight at the Ivy House Lodge the day before New Year's Eve. Our room was clean, cozy, quiet, and came with a wonderful breakfast. We had a room in the Lodge area with two twin beds and shared bathrooms down the hall. The price was the best available for the area and only a few miles from the Everglades National Park Gulf Coast Visitor's Center where we took two boat tours. The manager stopped by our table at breakfast to personally ask us about our stay.

We spent 3 nights in early December 2012 at the Ivey House and were delighted with the quality of the accommodation. The breakfasts were basic but generous, and there were endless hot drinks available throughout the day. The staff were very friendly and helpful and able to give detailed advice on touring the Everglades. We went on one of the canoe trips organised by the Ivey House and it was excellent value, with a very knowledgeable guide. A very helpful comment book made finding local restaurants easy and provided a good guide as to standard and cuisine. The pool was cool, but very clean and enjoyable for a relaxing swim after a day's touring. December proved to be an excellent time to visit, with no mosquitos and lots of wildlife to see. Overall the Ivey House provided a very high standardof accommodation at a very reasonable price - excellent value for money. We will be recommending to friends and hope to return ourselves.

My family stayed in December 2012 after a few days of enjoying Key West. This inn is a welcome respite. We stayed in the Lodge where baths are down the hall and TVs and such were in a common area. It was really not a hassle at all. The shared baths were ALWAYS clean and the common area was always quiet (even with guests) as most took a side of the room and kept to themselves. We occupied two rooms. One had a double bed. The other 1 single and 1 twin. There was a table on each side of the bed, a lamp and a comfortable chair to lounge in.

All the reviews on the breakfast were good and I will agree. There is pretty much every selection you can find. Coffee is available the whole day in the dining area. There is a laundry area. The swimming pool is indoors, with a screened roof so the kids enjoyed continuing their swim eventhough it rained. Internet in the newer wing is reliable. On the older lodge, it isn't.

We took an Airboat tour of the marshland and reserved it through the hotel. It was a good discount. No alligators seen but many birds, herrons, and other wildlife. The best place to really see gators were at the Boardwalk which is less than a mile away. The City itself (Everglades City) is very small so restaurant choices can be pricey.

This is a green hotel so there were many recycling efforts and 'green-ing' efforts which we appreciated.

We stayed in one of the rooms with private bathroom. The hotel's cleanliness level is immaculate. It is a very well cared for property. The pool, however, was icy cold during our stay in mid-December 2012, which I found very disappointing. I expect to be able to use the pool at any and all hotels while traveling regardless of the time of year (lots of hotels have heated pools!). This amenity would've been extremely welcomed at this particular hotel because unless you're going to bed at 9p, there isn't much else to do (don't plan on watching TV or using your smart phone because there is neither cable nor Wifi!). I don't travel to sit in the room watching TV or websurfing so a relaxing swim would've been perfect and most definitely would've resulted in a 5 star rating from me.

The breakfast was better than expected with lots of fresh fruit and hearty bread items, oatmeal, cereals and the best darn sliced tomato I've had in awhile!

We bought the airboat/kayak package through the hotel. I suppose the rate was reasonable at $317 for two people. However, I would NOT recommend the airboat ride -it was little more than a boat ride through a manmade tunnel in the mangroves. Not much to see except mangrove legs (no wildlife because of the noise generated by the airboat) and now I can say I've ridden an airboat and contributed to some pollution in the Everglades. For the money, I much would've preferred two kayak trips.

We did the 7am guided kayak tour on the Turner River. Our guide, John, was excellent! He was very knowledgeable and great at pointing out wildlife to us that we would've otherwise missed. He took photos of us in our kayaks under a cypress dome surrounded by all the beautiful bromeliads and other airplants --that we were able to see up close as we glided through the mangroves. We saw many alligators including tiny babies, and lots of birds, and a few rare orchid species. This kayak trip was a definite highlight of our South Florida vacation!

Thank you so much for your comments! We appreciate the time you have taken to offer such comprehensive feedback!
Please first, accept our apologies that the pool temperatures did not meet your expectations. Of course, we are so proud to offer such a great amenity to our guests, and it should always be found at a comfortable temperature. Our pool is heated and monitored, and based upon your comments we have added additional temperature testing to ensure it is always found to be desirable.
John is truly a wonderful asset to our EvergladesAdventures.com operation, and we are absolutely delighted that you enjoyed your trip with him. To have such wonderful, knowledgeable and dedicated team members - who care for our Everglades ecosystem - is a pleasure. We hope you have many memories of your kayak trip to take with you into the future.

All the Best!

Our perspective was probably colored by coming directly from a 5 day luxury Caribbean cruise. The ... basic-ness of the Ivey was a stark contrast. We stayed in one of the newer rooms, with its own bathroom. It was spacious and clean and quiet, simple and practical. The morning breakfast was good, with good un-fancy variety. We did a package, including a kayak trip on the Turner River and airboat/swamp buggy rides at Wooten's. It was pricey. In fact, everything in this unfancy inn, town and area was pricey. The reception area and coffee area closes at 9 pm - if you want tea after that, too bad. The room refrigerator was noisy - my husband unplugged it. They are "green" - the toilet roll holder for instance only allows a couple sheets unrolled at a time and there are recycle bins all around. However, we were there two nights and they changed our sheets, which we found odd. Sack lunches were included in our package, for two days - they were generous and good sandwiches, though for some reason they kept putting them on wheat rolls when we'd asked for wheat bread (the wheat bread at breakfast was great).
Jeff, our kayak guide, was competent and knowledgeable. However, the night before I asked how many were in our group and was told there were 6. But in fact, there were 10. My husband says he was told they try to have 8-10 people on a trip. But this is just too many people for one guide. There are two points to having a guide - to keep you from getting lost and to point out things of interest and inform you (maybe that's three things). But on this trip, much of it is single file, and with people of varying abilities of navigating, the line gets very strung out. No matter where the guide is, not everyone can hear him/her. And the pace gets set by the slowest kayaker. We would have liked a smaller group that covered more ground - it was a very, very slow trip covering a very small area for us.
I'll review Wooten's separately.

Thank you so very much for taking some time to add some comments regarding your stay at the Ivey House. While we cannot compete with a luxury cruise - we trust that you enjoyed the appeal of our little fishing village. Many efforts go into maintaining the authenticity of the history and "simple" appeal of Everglades City and a stay at the Ivey House. We aspire to offer clean, comfortable accommodations, with every effort being made to have a heart for the nature surrounding us. This sometimes does come off as a stark contrast, but hopefully with its own charm.
Please accept our apologies for the delays you experienced during your eco-tour. It is absolutely our intent to give everyone a spectacular experience, and we did not meet your expectations. Please know that I have forwarded your comments to our guides in an effort to improve the flow and management of guided tours - particularly on the river, where passages can be narrow. We will improve to offer a better experience to future tour participants.
We hope that should your travels bring you back to southwest Florida, that we might be so fortunate as to welcome you back.

We stayed at the Inn at Ivey house, which has a full bathroom in the room. The Lodge does not.
Everything seems to close at 9 pm in Everglades City, including check in for the Ivey House. Not sure what you do after 9. The rooms are simple with two queen beds, but perfect for jumping off spot for the Everglades.

The Ivey house offers morning 2 hour guided kayak tours for around $90.00 per person. We had already made plans and did not have time, but would definitely take it next time.

Breakfast buffet is included in the price and offers a good selection. The Ivey house does not have a restaurant but there is an excellent one (Camellia Street Grill) in walking distance.

Room Tip: Chose the Inn if you want an en suite bathroom.

Thank you so much for your kind words! We are so pleased that you enjoyed your time at the Ivey House.
Your are correct - in essence, the sidewalks do rollup at around 9pm. Everglades City is still somewhat of a sleepy fishing village - hopelessly devoted to the outdoors and nature. We all live by the mantra "early to bed, early to rise". While this does sometimes put a damper on the nightlife, it does afford our guests every opportunity to enjoy every waking minute in the beauty of the Everglades.
We hope you find your way back to the 'Glades, so we can welcome you back to the Ivey House.
