“Unpleasant experience”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2007

We have just had lunch at the Rod & Gun Club & found the food to be extremely poor (and over-priced),but our main complaint is that the management had decided to close off the main part of the Inn,including the restrooms,so that the only restroom available, even though we had just paid for lunch, was in the bar. This single restroom(unisex) meant a long wait in line to use this facility.
I told 'management' that I considered this situation unacceptable & intended to bring it to the attention of other potential guests.
The woman prompty told me that, unless I also mentioned that it was Everglades City Seafood Festival, she would take further action against me!
I presume this to mean that she accepted that the lack of facilities for guests was indeed unacceptable ,but not on this particular day!
This experience was most unpleasant & we will not be returning.

“Started great”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2007

Neat place, neat location, cool atmosphere. Great main room with a classic lodge feel from a Hemmingway novel. All is great so far. Sat down for lunch on the porch overlooking the river, still great. Relaxing, nice, comfortable until.....the river is really Airboat alley where tours go out every 10 minutes or so and as it turns out the lodge is next to the helipad where a helicopter landed in the middle of lunch where we had the joyful experience of rotor wash and all. The menu is geared towards the Red Lobster crowd with not one local fish to be found. Burgers are $11.00, my grilled seafood platter consisted of three scallops (size of a quarter, I'm being kind), two uncleaned shrimp, two very small frog legs, a small portion of I think Tillapia and a slice of lemon $17.00. Three beers to choose from, Coors Light $5.00. Lunch for two adults and an 8 year old with tip $70.00.

Rotor wash from the helicopter, priceless!

“The history far exceeds the quality, but it's nice to dine there anyway.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2006

This historic Rod & Gun Club in it's heyday must have been quite the place. Today, it is but a shell of its former encarnation. Upon entry into the Rod & Gun Club, one is amazed at the expansive varnished wood floors and pecky cypress walls, well adorned with fish and animal trophies of all types, the massive fire place, and the bar to the right, which is only for show . . . not a bottle or a beer to be had in there, although it could become a great pub if it were run by a local bartender with lots of "glades" stories. Although the dining room of the Rod & Gun Club looks formal, the outside patio was the only portion of the restaurant that was being used when my wife and I were there in early March 2006. The table service at the Rod & Gun Club is friendly, but very inexperienced . . . not their fault, the management simply did not train the servers, and obviously nobody trainded the old, grouchy cashier who is the Rod & Gun Club's "window to the world". The Rod & Gun Club would have a much nicer atmosphere if someone would greet the diners and seat them, and make them feel welcome. But instead, you get the backside view of "grandma" at the front desk, who seemingly could care less if you are there, or if you are not, and you wander into the patio dining area wondering if you should just sit down, or if somebody will greet you. On your second visit to the Rod & Gun Club you will know . . . you just sit down . . . nobody will greet you. No restaurant in Everglades City has table cloths or linen knapkins, surprising, because they all seem to charge the same $17.95 for about every dinner entre, plus the extras. The food at the Rod & Gun Club was tastey, but overpriced, as was the food at the Seafood Depot down the street, but the Rod & Gun Club has more comfortable chairs, and is cleaner. The Rod & Gun Club does not serve breakfast, but breakfast or lunch at Havana Cafe in nearby Chokoloskee is a must. Overall, Everglades City is a "must do, must stay, must dine" on anyone's itinerary in the Everglades. The whole town of Everglades City is clean, quiet and charming, with friendly people, cats and dogs - a great place to base yourself while touring the Everglades and the many things to do there. So the food at all the restaurants is overpriced and not quite gourmet . . . hey, it's edible and it's good, and the locals need to make a living, so don't complain! Definitely eat at all the local restaurants in Everglades City and Chokoloskee . . . they may not win the Gourmet Society Seal of Superiority, but you won't regret the experience!
