“Atmospheric location, let down by poor food”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

Wouldn't recommend for a meal. Despite fresh fish on supply, the meal was ruined by a layer of processed cheese (why?!). Also ordered steaks - which was ok for a steak, but not a good cut. Expected better especially seeing the prices.

“What a neat place!”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

Walking into the Rod and Gun club is like going back in time. The walls in the entrance way are papered with articles about the club's history and include photos of famous folks who have visited. Entering the main lodge, you see more very dark wood paneling, an old billiards table, and a beautiful stone fireplace. I am neither a hunter nor fisher, so all the "trophies" (plenty of alligator skins, deer heads, etc.) were a bit disturbing to me, but I was at a rod and gun club... The main feature of the restaurant is the lovely screened in dining area that is right on one of the river-like tributaries of the Everglades. If it's a hot day and you need to get away from all of the commercialized and over-developed Florida, this is a great place to go.
The food was fine - two of us had crabcakes, one a burger, and one the fried oysters. Nothing to win any awards, but the setting made the lunch. Casual dress is appropriate.

“The Real Deal”
Reviewed December 21, 2012

if you like the look and feel of the early 1900s teak and copper and wood and lazy ceiling fans, this place is worth a stop. Free restrooms in the bar/restaurant and the lobby. The entrance to the lobby is lines with old framed newspaper articles.... I spent 15 minutes in that area alone. Really cool. There was NOBODY there when I was there at 2pm on 20 December. Felt like I was going back in time.

“Average food, high price”
Reviewed December 20, 2012

The fish and sea food we had on the first night were Ok , but not remarkable. On the second night, they cooked our fish (blackened) and it was excellent. Breakfast was standard but pricy.

“Stopped by for Lunch”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Stopped by the Rod and Gun Club for lunch. This old hotel is old, but cool if you can appriciate how Florida used to be. While eating lunch on the veranda, I imagined how the Club must have been in its hayday. I had a good grouper sandwich and a very good mango-lemonade. This a nice average place to relax and get a bite to eat.
