“Don't do it!”
Reviewed June 24, 2008

To start with we arrived at 9:10 in the evening and EVERYTHING was shut. We had warned the hotel that we would be arriving at this time, so were hoping they were expecting us. However, the reception was locked up and dark. We had to use a phone outside reception to call them and they said (rather angrily) that they would be down soon. We waited for some time whilst an angry mob of mosquitos proceeded to eat us alive!! When the receptionist eventually made an appearance (in her PJs!) she was very unfriendly and uncommunicative. She could see that we'd obviously had a long journey and were obviously tired, thirsty, hungry and being bitten constantly! She took ages to get things sorted and barely said a word to us other than to point us in the general direction of our room. When we asked if there was anywhere open to get some food, we were told rather rudely that no, everything shuts at 9. Nevermind, things were obviously different in this town, so we went off to our room. The room had an AWFUL smell about it. It was a damp smell which also sort of had a faint whiff of urine about it. EVERYTHING felt damp, especially the bed sheets. The air conditioning was old and noisy and the bathroom looked like it might have creepy crawlies in it. Maybe it didn't but I didn't hang around long enough to find out! We checked out first thing the next morning, which was our plan anyway, and the receptionist was slightly more friendly then, but I wasn't sorry to see the back of the place!

My husband and I were looking for a place to stay for one night on our trip to the Everglades. We paid $75 for quite a big room at The Captain's Table but it was extremely basic; the bath and shower were quite grotty and the woman at reception didn't really seem to be too happy in her job - if she is then she should certainly tell her face. She did however give us all the information we needed about the hotel and its facilities.

Everglade City is pretty but only seems to have a Supermarket, a Seafood Restaurant (that everybody seems to go to) and a Subway (food outlet, not transport). The Seafood restaurant is Ok if you like your food fried - I had the crab cakes and they were too salty and therefore a bit disappointing, but the beer was cold and the staff happy to help.

Myself and two friends stayed at this hotel for three nights in late April 2008. The rooms were very spacious and the facilities were all fine.

There is a large pool on site, as well as Lake Placid and a very good restaurant two minutes walk away.

If you're after a place to stay where you can slow down the pace of the holiday for a few days then you really can't go wrong staying at the Captain's Table.

Recommended.

  • Liked — Good size room.
  • Disliked — The extra room (sun room?) was too hot to actually use.

We stayed here in December while visiting the Everglades. Checking in was quick but not very friendly. The Seafood Depot was recommended by the driver of the airboat and was right next door. Our room smelled bad, like smoke and mildew. No shampoo, no hairdryer in the room, the cable went out half way through the night. There wasn't a clock or anyone there after 8 pm to ask for a wake up call the next morning. There's no coffee pot in the room so we went to the lobby where they advertised a continental breakfast. When my husband went to grab two coffees for us to have in the room while getting packed and cleaned up, they won't let him bring it back to the room. The front desk personnel didn't appear to care when we advised her that our key didn't work well in the lock to the room door. Nor did the lock to the porch stay locked. If you don't care about creature comforts, it would be ok at half the price.

  • Liked — Was available on short notice
  • Disliked — Cleanliness, friendliness, ammenities.

We stayed here for one night while touring around Florida. The whole area was still clearing up after hurricane Katrina so some of the hotel was still surrounded by scaffolding.

We were impressed with the size of our accomidation, and had plenty of room for the four adults in our party.

The bathroom was probably the scruffiest part of the room, but perfectly usable and had a brilliant shower.

There is a small supermarket next door, which made the kitchen area worthwile.

For an evening meal we went to the Seafood Depot next door, and had a really nice meal. We forgot to show our room key though in the resturant, if we had we would have received a discount.

I have to say that I was not expecting much when I entered the restaurant by pure chance with my brother. We had decided to go for dinner outside of our motel and we really had no clue that we would make such a nice discovery. The restaurant looks a little bizarre especially in the inside but we asked to be seated outside in front od the water and it was a great time, as memorable as the rest of our trip to the everglades. Ou waiter (young and smiling, cant remember his name though) was very well mannered and very polite. The food was delicious but it is the service and the view (sunset and water) that made it special. I would recommend to seat close to the water on the outside and not to late...
