Owner description: Escape Naples' dazzling pace of development for a day and spend a lazy afternoon exploring the history of nearby Everglades City. Once accessible only by boat, this remote frontier trading town took an ambitious new turn in 1923 as the hub of Barron Collier's personal Southwest Florida real estate empire - with a population of fewer than twelve families. First opened in 1927 as a commercial laundry, today's Museum of the Everglades dates back to a time when construction of the famous Tamiami Trail was well underway and the tiny settlement of Everglades served as the first County seat. The museum's permanent and rotating exhibits provide visitors with an in-depth look at over 2,000 years of human history in the area and tell the story of those adventurous enough - and stubborn enough - to settle Southwest Florida's lush "River of Grass." Faithfully restored to its original, 1920s Collier-era appearance, the museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located 35 miles east of downtown Naples.

We were greeted upon entering by a very helpful lady. She not only explained the museum but also was well versed on the area of Everglades city. The pictures & artifacts very well display and explain the history of the area. Several videos were available and again helpful. Some very interesting art work was on display in the entrance way.

“nice little museum”
Reviewed January 20, 2012

that little they have is very well presented, touches a lot of points of local history and times. if you are in the town then go but a 20mi detour might be a bit too fetched.

“Nice small attraction”
Reviewed January 7, 2012

We traveled in July and did not have a reservation for a tour boat. The bugs were horrendous, which is why they sell many brands of bug spray at the museum. It is a small museum, but both of our children 9 and 12 found it interesting. My daughter was disappointed she did not see an alligator (since we could not catch a boat), but on the drive back to Marco Island, there are canals on the side of the road where we saw several alligators floating right next to the road (free). It was very exciting to see them in the wild.
