“Loved the Old Florida Charm”
Reviewed December 2, 2008

This property is truly Old Florida, a vanishing commodity. The rooms were clean and comfortable. They had recently been updated. The food was good. If you want the Ritz, go to Naples. This is a great place to base a fishing or sightseeing trip.

Our stay at this historic location was marvelous. The new management team is welcoming and helpful.

The rooms have been remodeled without losing the essence of their original rustic hunting and fishing lodge connections.

We didn't realize that so many famous people in our natiion's history had stayed there over the previous 100 or so years.

We could feel ourselves totally relax while sitting on the veranda, watching the tide change in front of us.

We enjoyed a delicious stone crab appetizer, scrumptious lunch, and key lime pie for dessert.

Our family has used this hotel before. We like them because of the deep water access (5 feet) directly to the Ten Thousand Islands Fishing. We tie our boat up right there (free) Cottages are old but serviceable. We actually bring a tiny fridge and fish every day, storing fish in the tiny fridge and cooking them on a portable grill on the sidewalk. The staff are apparently primarily for the restaurant, but the housekeeper did fine with out room. The pilings to tie up to are somewhat worn -- bring lots of fenders. Hotel has a usable but narrow boat ramp right there. Park your trailer right on the property. Next to the ramp is very convienient tie up -- but the step down to the water level is as much as 4 feet at low tide. Small boats like ours do better if tied up at the other end of the property, near the main building. There is also a step down area. You are only a short idle-speed trip from the bay. Channel is marked. Get a map. Current is amazingly strong! Plenty of guides avail, one took us right back to our hotel. At night, just throw out a sinker and a line and you will at LEAST catch catfish -- our 12-year old caught eight, even in a cold snap. Even in horrible weather we got a keeper red drum at the abandoned docks and also sheepshead. Spring/Summer--snook. But the hotel closes in the summer. Also, be sure to arrive before 5PM to get your key.
We'll go back annually.

We visited here for lunch and found it to be a very interesting place. There is so much history here. We heard about it through a local person who worked in Naples who said we must go there to visit while doing an airboat ride. The inside interior is awesome!! It is well worth a visit. We are from Columbus, Ohio.

We were looking forward to staying at the Rod and Gun, as well as having dinner there. I met David Carradine there in the 1970's and had fond memories of the lodge and the dining room. When we arrived hungry for dinner (6-ish,) we were told they would not be serving dinner that night (although someone told me several hours earlier on the phone that the dining room was open until 8:00.) So we ate at the apparently only other restaurant open in Everglades City, then afterward went back to check in for the night, only to find no one there - it was CLOSED and completely LOCKED UP! No one answered the phone, either. YES, I had a reservation, (although they don't take credit cards, so you just hold a room with your name.) I would describe the two people we had talked to as "gruff" and the other "strange." Neither was friendly or helpful. I saw other reviewers write about the cabins...they really looked like they had seen better days...was THAT where they would have put us up? We'd still like to still go back (we live 3 hours away,) and check it out sometime, (the dark wood interior is fabulous,) but how can we be sure they'll actually BE THERE? I won't take the chance.

Where Southern Hospitality runs out !
After seeing the brochure and Web site we were looking forward to staying in this Inn where rock stars and presidents had stayed. It was a shock to find the grand staircase roped off and our room was a "shed" divided into 4 out back, with paper thin walls and a grotty bathroom. (No rock star had stayed here)
The beautifully panelled bars were shut and they don't serve breakfast, also you can only have dinner before 7.30p.m.
The conservatory, where we had lunch, was very nice but the too few staff could not cope with the lunchtime rush.
When we finally found someone to check us in, the rude member of staff demanded cash up front, as no cards are taken. In hindsight we should have checked the rooms first and driven away.
Avoid !!
