Very unfriendly women informed us that this was a business and not a sightseeing tour. There was one couple dining. I understand why. She said we could either have a drink or pay $3 each. I have never been in any establishment, where you could'nt look around.Even our local driver was appalled and embaressed. I expect it will soon close. Don't bother going here. Management needs a new business plan,or at leased a sign out front laying down the rules. Read all the reviews,it will make up your very quickly

Advertised as the most elegant experience in Everglades City, we found this old dame to be a little down on her luck and in need of some upgrades. Her location is perfect though. The porches along the Baron River, of course, are just take-your-breath-away beautiful and good place to catch a lunch. The food is average at best though. And I don’t think I have ever experienced a waitress as grumpy and as tired of out-of-towners as the one we had. Quite funny actually. The service in general was down home, but “provincial” at best. Kind of place where if you are having problems with your toilet they are more than happy to hand you a plunger; if you catch my drift.

We stayed in one of the cottage rooms (I don’t think the hotel itself is actually being used now) and it was comfortable enough with a relaxing screen porch; just right for settling into a low key Everglades City frame of mind.

Overall, this place has a great tradition and sense of place, just needs some serious TLC.

We arrived in Everglades City without reservations. We found hotels with higher Tripadvisor ratings already booked. The Rod and Gun had vacancies, so we took our chances.

The exterior and the lobby were intriguing but the overall experience proved disappointing. There was no reception at check-in, we had to come back later. The hotel does not accept credit cars, so we had to access the only cash machine in town, at the Circle K.

The hotel rooms are not in the lodge but in three detached six-plex units. The walls were paper thin. The A/C was too noisy to use. There was no usable furniture other than beds - no dresser, no table. The hot water gave out immediately when a neighbor entered their shower. The bathroom window opened onto the neighbor's porch. No phone, no coffee, no wifi.

The bathroom and floors appeared clean. Linens appeared clean.

Low end, basic. Mid-price for Everglades City. Next time, we'll plan better.

We arrived in Everglades City without a hotel reservation, started calling around for a room for the night. This lodge told us they were totally booked....but that if a couple of reservations had not arrived by 6 pm that they'd have rooms to rent....so we checked other places to no avail so I entered this lodge at 6 pm, and thought I'd arrived in Casablanca and was successful in renting a room. I was met by a welcoming woman named Barbara at the front desk telling her that myself, son, daughter-in-law and my toddler grand daughter needed a room. She had me take a look at a cabin-type room which included a private bath, double bed and single bed which was vintage Victorian with a screened porch facing the canal. The entire hotel was gorgeous including the pool with its waterfall.....$154 a night. We were greeted at breakfast by Barbara again and Ashley was our waitress who served us a delightful breakfast. Barbara also told us about sites to visit nearby. I'd recommend this place to anyone who want to experience the Everglades City lifestyle...you will walk in going "ahhhhhh"...Enjoy !

Room Tip: Be sure to reserve your room in advance.

While visiting Florida we stumbled upon little everglades city, We went on a lovely airboat tour through the Everglades and asked the gentlemen where we should have lunch, he said the Rod and Gun Club was a great place to go... We arrived and were greeted by a very sweet waitress, she seated us and began to tell us all the lovely specials they had...we tried the gator chili! It was delicious! You could tell it was homemade! We also had there key lime pie which was another hit! We loved our experience so much that we asked about staying the night, the young lady at the front desk let us choose between a few rooms that we particular liked most, every room was very nice, clean and looked like they were recently remodeled, We decided to stay! The next morning we asked if we could have a later check out because we wanted to do a canoe tour and they automatically said of coarse! It was a wonderful experience and whenever we return back to Florida we are defiantly coming back to the Rod and Gun Club!

Background first - Vacationing in Naples, Florida. We stoped here for lunch in the screened-in veranda with another couple. We did not stay here overnight.

Food ok, I'd give it a average - good rating. Service just ok. Just a view of a boating canal so no special view in my opinion.

The problem is this place is highly overpriced, ridiculously overpriced in fact. $7.00 Corona beer,
15.00 hamburger, $15.00 salad, etc. Then they added there own tip to the bill (seriously, who does that for a party of 4).

If you are the slightest bit cost-conscious skip this restaurant.

The Rod and Gun, from the outside, has everything going for it. The interior is quite wonderful; probably the best we have seen in our 54 nights on the road. The chap at Reception was very helpful ...... but there it ends. The cabin rooms are ‘motel’-style but with no coffee/tea/hot water facility. The walls are thin and you can hear your neighbours. There is no wifi and no credit card facility. We had dinner but one of us left almost the total meal – the waitress was amazingly inattentive and rude – parmesan cheese was scattered all over the already salt-drenched sea food which, itself, was over-cooked. Whilst we were compensated, we were never asked if we would like dessert or coffee.

What a great shame for such potential; if the owners got this place sorted i.e. sack the waitress and maybe the chef and add one or two facilities to the rooms, this hotel would climb up the Tripadvisor ladder of which we wish we had taken more notice. Certainly not recommended.
