We stopped in to see the place, and it's cooler than the pictures give it justice. Old paneling lots of intricate detail and old furnishings. Unfortunately we stopped in for a drink and ended up being sent to the dining room where the waitress proceeded to set us up for dinner. It was a little embarrassing getting out of there but we really didn't want dinner. And we were only one of two in the entire place.
It is worth stopping by and checking in out though. Hopefully they can keep the character and bring back the people.

Now this is a place to see!
Yeah, the waitress "auctioned" our food (when some one takes your order they shouldn't have to ask who ordered what); yeah, they only had one red wine and one white wine ; yeah, the woman who owns the place doesn't seem to care but THIS is a place time forgot: deeply paneled walls covered in guns and fish and one really big gator skin; a broad and wide porch; an old gas pump on the pier; creaky wicker furniture on the open porch ... If it was for sale I could turn it into something worth bragging about. Fabulous history. Fabulous potential. Worth the visit just to see the history that lives and breathes in the walls.

We stopped by for a quiet lunch on the veranda, watching the boats go by on the river. The main room of the lodge provides a feel for the rich history of this part of the everglades, its worth a close look. The service was slow, but we were in no hurry, and the lunch - a 'seafood salad' - was excellent.

We stayed in Everglade city in January and we found this hotel. It is old style, that is nice for us, but the room was smelling really bad that we had to sleep with the door open, the bathroom and the floor were dirty, dust under the bed and pieces of papers on the floor.
No wi-fi, no breakfast, no fridge in the room ,only one litle soap for 5 people.
We left after one night as we thought that 150 dollars for this room was really too much.

As others have said the Rod and Gun Lodge may once have been the place to stay but not anymore. You cannot stay in the hotel anymore, instead you are placed in one of the tiny bungalows within the grounds. These are in a poor state of repair. When we visited in december the heating was faulty and when trying to arrange moving into another bungalow because of this we were met by rude and unhelpful staff.

The restaurant offers very average quality food and like the accomodation is overpriced. All in all our stay was very disappointing. We will never return here despite visiting Everglades City on an annual basis.

Room Tip: Pick another hotel!

Please don't let your staff smoke on the front steps of your property. It's not at all welcoming when you have to walk past them to check in and another time when we were going up the steps to the bar by the pool.
$125/night in January is not bad for accommodation in Florida in season and there are not many places to chose from. Though all they had left was a room with a double and a twin bed and we wanted a king bed. Historic main house which has the lobby, bar, restaurant and free pool table. Rooms are in what they call "cottages" but each cottage/out building has either 4 or 6 rooms/units. The porches are shared unless you get an end unit, so it's not likely you'll be sitting on it with strangers. Our room 41 overlooked the parking lot, not noisy but the orange street light shone in the window. Some rooms face the water/ canal green space so ask for one of those. Our room had a bar fridge and 19" or 22" flat screen tv. Beautiful wood floors, crown molding and the paint looked new. Old looking, thin mattresses on both beds. Bathroom needs to be renovated. The shower was pathetic. There was no hot water Friday night when we checked in and I was told it could take 20 minutes. The water heater is around the side of the building so go check it and make sure it's on. Sunday morning was the same, no hot water because the heater was off. Remember to bring your own shampoo and conditioner as they do not provide it and bring your own bars of soap cause the little ones break apart.
The property has a boat ramp and it's $20 in/out but if you're a guest you don't have to pay and there is boat trailer parking. There is a sea wall that you can tie up to. If you launch at their property the channel is well marked.
We didn't eat in their restaurant because it is overpriced and based on other trip advisor reviews it didn't sound very good. We ate at The Captains Table. There is a Subway in a gas station. No fast food chain restaurants. Everglades City is very small and most people come to fish.
Since there aren't a lot of choices, give this property a try.

Room Tip: Ask about end rooms which have their own porch. Also ask for a room that faces the water.
