Owner description: At just over 2000 meter. Jebel Shams Resort is ideally situated a few minutes walk from the famous "Grand Canyon of Oman" and a visit to us on Oman's highest Mountain at approximately 3000 Meter is great place from which to enjoy the mountain. A warm welcome is ready for all those weary adventurers who visit it. Enjoy a perfect starry night sky outside one of our Arabic Rents or Chalets and enjoy a warming campfire at night. During the day there are lots of lovely walks and treks to suit all levels of fitness. For those who want to just relax then there is a swimming pool and lovely views of the surrounding stunning mountain vista.

Amazing views and lots of new goat friends. If you are not familiar with back country mountain driving you will likely not want to do this drive on your own. Lots of sharp drops and one lane sometimes having to deal with 2 vehicles. I'm not sure what the temperature is like in the winter months but in April it is a huge relief from the 40 degrees of the rest of the country, it got down to about 30ish degrees. There is some great hiking along the way so it just depends on your ability and comfort level. And if you don't want to hike there are easy ambles to see some great views too.

The peak is inaccessible as it is an RAF base , you can’t get anywhere near the top , only the peak opposite which is at least 30m less than the summit , still amazing views but if you are after hiking and bagging a peak, as I was, then this isn’t for you

Arrived in time to do a quick Balcony walk and as sun was right great colours on the opposite walls though I think an hour earlier around 2pm would have been perfect.
Camping wild, anywhere actually, up on the ridge is one of the great things about Oman that you should take advantage of either renting equipment or buying some cheaper stuff you won't miss when you leave. Jebel Shams itself is a distance peak to point at and probably nice to hike with lots of time. We preferred to sleep in its embrace and move on.

Keep in mind, that it is not possible to reach the TOP by car. There is a road, but it is closed by military. You can drive to fantastic spot, which is at approx. 2000m level, so around 1000m below the summit. There is a foot path to the summit, but it takes several hours both ways. We took W6 path to the abandoned village and this was fantastic, count 3h easy walk both ways, 2h if you are in hurry.

I'm so glad we spent a night camping on Jebel Shams! We drove up (an easy, comfortable drive - just take it slow going around some of those bends) and had a lovely evening watching the sunset, trying our best to make a campfire, and enjoying the stars. There were a few people camping, but it was pretty isolated. The view over the canyon in the morning was so pretty, as the sun moved along, the mountains just came alive. There's lots of goats who are pretty harmless and well used to their human visitors.

The hotel nearby looked like a good option as well.
