After arriving at 930 am on a Saturday in late July we realized how crowded this place was. We didn't want to wait an hour to park. We wanted to go to the kp hole park but that was to crowded. We ended up going to a kayak rental and renting one for 30 a day best day ever! Highly reccomend the rainbow river it is amazing!

We started at KP Hole for the 4 hour float down the river. Arrive early (before 10AM) or there is no parking and they close the lots. Get in line to rent your tubes (need photo ID)and get a shuttle ticket and admission. There is a staff member standing at the end of the line with armbands if you only need admission. If you bring your own tubes, they have an air station but bring quarters - 50cents to use.
Once you have slathered yourself in sunscreen and got your water and snacks (no disposable containers allowed and no alcohol), time to brave the refreshing 72 degree water - that's crystal clear. Hop in your float and enjoy the views of natural Florida...birds, fish, river otters.
Be prepared to reposition yourself several times since 4 hours is a LONG time to sit in one position. Once you get to the take out (signs will tell you!!) then you can catch the shuttle back to the parking lot. There are bathrooms, changing rooms and lockers. There is also a snack bar selling hot dogs, kettle corn, water, soda, chips, etc.

We went tubing last weekend with a group of 25 or so people. I had never been, but had always wanted to try it. I will be going back!

We got there around 10:00 on a Sunday morning and it wasn't crowded at all. We paid $10 a person to get our tube and a ride to the part of the river where you set off. The water is nice and cool and felt great. We had brought some water in reusable bottles and tied them to our tube to just float along with us. My son had goggles and would alternate between floating and swimming around looking at the fish. We saw some otters playing on the side of the river and a cormorant catching and eating a fish. The two hours flew by!

Things to know:
1. Get there early.
2. Bring water or drinks only in reusable containers.
3. Wear water shoes or sandals for walking to and from the river. It would be a little rough on bare feet.
4. You can bring a picnic and eat near the parking lot at picnic tables.
5. You can bring your own floatie thing. Some people had chaise-type floaties which looked more comfy than the tube.
6. Wear sunscreen!
7. Relax and enjoy real Florida.

I can't wait to go back!

Discovered this back in the early 80's when it was owned privately. Canoed up from the campground, docked and roamed the hills, waterfalls and swam to our hearts content. Between Rainbow and Wakulla, these are the two best most beautiful springs in Florida.
After having kids, this was our favorite river to camp, tube and kayak on-our son was tubed it at 9 months. Our children are now adults and we love the hunt for Florida springs; but Rainbow will always be our favorite.

Once the state purchased it, which I suppose is a good thing, we lost the ability to paddle and dock at the headwaters. But now more people can come and enjoy its beauty and are taught to respect it. I would have loved to have been able to visit it when it was an "award winning Florida attraction" complete with a ride that looked like peapods (I have an old brochure on it).

Forget Disney World...at least for a weekend discover Florida!

Rainbow River is not for everyone, obviously, but we love it. My husband, and son are not outdoor kind of guys, but they enjoy this trip every time. Make sure you bring a cooler, packed with food and drinks, because it is a long trip(4hours+) if you leave from K.P. Hole. Bring an extra tube for you cooler to float on. Lots of sunscreen. Rope if you want to keep everyone together. Make sure you bring everything in Tupperware containers. Make a pitcher of Kool Aid, or tea, and have non-disposable cups to pour it in. There is no alcohol allowed, so, hide it well, if you decide to try it...they do check your coolers at K.P. Hole, there are sheriff's on the water looking too. A snorkel and mask are always fun to have, so you can dive down and take a look around. Do not forget the sunscreen, or you will be burnt at the end. Make sure someone buys the armband for the shuttle, otherwise when you get to the end, you'll be stuck, and have a long walk back, and believe me, after being on that river all day, you're not going to want to walk anywhere! You will want to sleep though. :) There are no bathrooms along the river. About half way through, there is a campground on the left, don't miss it, that's your only chance if you need to go! Call any of the parks if you have questions before you go, that's what they're there for. Check the weather before you go also, because again, there is no where to go after you're on the river, and you don't want to be caught in lightning out there!
