“Outstanding Rail-to-Trail Park”
Review of Pinellas Trail

Extending for miles and miles the Pinellas Trail traverses nearly the entire north-to-south length of Pinellas County. The trail is level, paved, and wide. In both directions pedestrians keep to east while bikes and skates keep to the west. The Trail is most certainly pet friendly. The P-Trail passes through or very near to several parks -- Wall Springs Park being our favorite -- and through the main downtown districts of several communities -- Tarpon Springs and Dunedin are charming. Enjoy a short or long hike or bike along this wonderful linear park.

This person, bke, and cart trail is paved over former railroad tracks. It runs thru the downtowns of several Pinellas County municipalites equipped with places for a beverage or a meal or just a water hole. In at least two towns....Dunedin and Tarpon Springs....the former train stations now function as the local historical museum. The trail runs about 35 miles north to south with new east west shorter spurs being created as right of ways are secured. There are benches at strategic locations for a rest or a snack. Parts are elevated to cross a major road adding a two or three story view.

But let me tell you. If you go down the wrong way or get in an accident in front of someone. The locals will yell at you. For there is obviously trail etiquette protocol to follow. For this has happen to me and to someone else I know. LOL!

The Pinellas Trail is a fantastic linear park that goes through most of Pinellas County. We have walked sections of it this past year but most recently we road our bikes. Parking in a Public Parking lot on the edge of Dunedin, we hopped on our bikes to ride to Clearwater. The Trail is great as you don't have to be bothered by traffic and can enjoy the scenic terrain or other sights along the way. We stopped for a tasty lunch at Nauti Nancy's in Clearwater. It is next to the Trail so an easy stopping place for good food. (Casual basically outdoor eatery).
Returning to Dunedin, we parked the bikes and strolled through downtown. Be sure to check out the Pinellas Trail website which gives distances between points. This was my first time riding my bike any distance in a long time, so I was cautious to not overdo. Each part of the Trail offers different sights. Heading north from Dunedin it is less congested with homes, more scenic and even gets close to the bay. Next trip we'll head north to Wall Springs (great park) and Tarpon Springs.
