I am local and support everything about this park - from the beaches to the "cafe" in the park. It doesn't matter if we go to see the sunset or enjoy the sun and lunch.
The hiking trails are perfect and the children's play area is great.

This is the place for you. Great State Park! Nice stretch of beach that is totally loaded with lots of varieties of sea shells including some of the largest I've ever seen. Lots of great places to sit and watch the water; big swings and benches. There is an interesting nature museum that is included in your park admission. I've never done it but you can board a ferry from here to Caladesi! I love the sign just past the entrance warning about rattle snakes. Sort of stopped me from hiking. Very good beach spots for changing, washroom breaks and getting a frozen treat on a hot day.

This past weekend I spotted eagles, osprey, vultures, armadillo, great horned owls and various other bird and I only spent 2 hours on the Osprey Nature Trail! I know lots of folks go to the island for the beautiful beach's but don't realize there is a wonderful Nature Center and several great nature trails (comfortable walking and well marked). There is a picnic area by the parking lot with restrooms and a play area for children. If you visit the park be sure and try a little hiking...its nest building time.

Have been to many beaches all over the US, but this one is a real treat. It is easy to get to, plenty of parking, and you will notice how clean it is as you pull up. The beach is very long, so not congested, and you will not find the usual trash seen in other areas. The sand is white, fine, and soothing to the feet. In addition to this, there is a nature center and lots of walking paths throughout the park. The Gulf tends to be a littel more gentle than the Atlantic, but there are days you will see the bigger waves. You can walk, run, bike, or rollerblade into the park and it is right off the main road in Dunedin. Enough shopping is right outside the gates to obtain anything you mighjt need, just don't leave any trash,.

Was running the local bike path in Dunestin and followed it right onto this island. Beautiful area, nice beaches. The beach is relatively flat all the way around the island which makes for easier running.
