“Very disappointed! needs urgent refurbishment!”
Reviewed August 19, 2007

Although we've booked a 4 nights stay, we left the hotel already after 1 night. Very old and stuffy rooms. Stuffy smell in corridors and elevators. Renovation works going on at the swimmingpool, which was our view out of the room. No beach. Restaurant mediocre. Hotel is isolated on the island Duck Key and far from Key West as well as Key Largo. We would advise to go directly to Key West, because this is really the main place of interest at the Florida Keys.

My family stayed in at Hawks Cay in August 07. After reading some of the reviews on this hotel I am amazed at some of the comments. My family and I throughly enjoyed our stay at Hawks Cay and would like to offer the following response to the negative comments posted.

Renovations
There was some renovation work underway when we were there however we did not find this intrusive or dissruptive to our stay what so ever. Most of the work was focussed on erecting new fencing at the main appartment buildings near the reception area.

The Lagoon
Hawks cay has a sea water lagoon beside the main family pool. We found both locations clean, free from litter and used both extensively.

Quality of Rooms
We had previously booked an apartment near the main pool however due to renovations we were upgraded to a villia. We found the rooms well kept, clean and homely Our villa had a perfect view of the boats and a personal spa which was a nice touch. Having stayed several times in hotels in florida (particulary in Orlando) I can confidently say that this was a high standard of room. Pay the extra money and get a villa if you can afford it.

Location
The location is away from for busy areas such as Key West however I found Duck key a good base from which to explore the Keys. For example, Key Largo is about a 1 hr drive away whilst Key West can be reached in 1.5 hr by car. If you want to explore more of the Keys then Hawks Cay could be for you.

We just returned from the resort and we were pleasantly surprised. After reading the reviews, we were skeptical. The Florida Keys are small fishing communities so if you are expecting the St. Regis or the Ritz Carlton you are going to be dissapointed. Yes, the resort needs renovating, but our villa had new carpet, new paint, updated appliances, comfortable beds and was extremely clean. I spent a day at the spa and again was pleasantly surprised considering the small town atmosphere and attitude. The staff was professional and the amenities were plentiful. The scalp massage put me to sleep. My thirteen year also spent a day at the youth spa and she thought the services were comparable to "the big girls spas" she has visited in Los Angeles and St. Barts. The only downside was the hot tub was not working. We were in building 5 and had a pool right outside in the back. It was very convenient for our eight year old and thirteen year old. We rented fishing poles and fished right outside our villa. They must have a new chef at Waters Edge Restaurant. After reading the reviews, we weren't sure about having dinner there. It turned out to be one of our favorite dinners and we are HUGE foodies. I throughly enjoyed my stay. It was relaxing and the staff was helpful throughout our stay. I highly recommend driving down to Bahia Honda Beach for a day and also Looe Key Dive Resort for snorkeling and diving. We spent a day in Key West and shopped and dined on Duval Street. I absolutely loved the drive down there on US 1. We did the cheesy tourist thing and rented a convertible but it was worth it. We can't wait to go back next year after their major renovation.

  • Liked — The location of our villa
  • Disliked — The out-of-service hot tub in the spa

We stayed in Hwks Cay at the end of July 07. We were not aprehensive by the negative reviews the place had gotten as we have become masters in filtering reviews in TA. We stayed in a room, not a villa, and although it did not have a luxury feeling, it was very clean and spacious.
We did not see any thing floating in the lagoon, on the contrary, water seemed to be very well kept. Service was very good and the food excelent and inexpensive. We actually made the mistake of leaving the resort to have dinner and regreted it.
My daughters loved the dolphin experience and, although you can swim with them at other places, the prices at GC are very competitive.
Overall a great experience. We will be back for Thanksgiving.

After a five year absence, we visited this past week-end. Overall, our stay was nice. There was some confusion on arrival but was quickly sorted out by the front desk manager. We can honestly say that every employee we spoke with was very friendly and efficient. The problems with this resort have not changed - there is not enough shade around the pool or lagoon and if you did not stake out a spot early in the day you were out of luck. It is unbelievable that a resort of this size would only have approximately 15 shaded areas between the main pool and lagoon. Hopefully, they will improve on this when they are renovating. The other main problem was the lagoon - it was DISGUSTING! There is one area that does not have enough water flow and the water was frothy and had an assortment of cans, plastic bottles and a childs shoe ( blue croc) floating around. This was during our 3 day stay- apparently the lagoon is never cleaned of debris. I realize that a resort can't control the quality or behavior of their guests, but it would have been nice to have someone around once in awhile to ask the man on the float in the lagoon to please smoke his cigar elsewhere ( ashes falling in the water) and to quiet down some of the language ( there was one family that only knew one word in english - F### -AND THIS WAS IN THE FAMILY AREA.) We will return to Hawks Cay again once the renovation has been completed. Hopefully, things will have improved. If not, Florida is full of wonderful places to visit, and we will certainly take our week-end trips elsewhere.

Hawks Cay is in a very, very isolated part of the Keys with little to do besides this hotel. Going further to Key West would be the answer to having more restaurant and touristy things to try. The Inn appears dated from the outside with a pink and blue exterior. The interior was clean with a tropical green and bamboo motiffe. We stayed on the resort but in Sunset Villa 5100 which appeared to be less than 5 years old and very clean. The pool by the Sunset Villas is the best of the 4 at this resort. The oldest pool by the main Inn is old with crumbling paint. Don't even try swimming in the salt water lagoon-it was cloudy with a oily sheen floating on the water. There is no beach here and you must drive at least 20 miles to get to the closest one: Bahia Honda, or 50 miles to Key West. The dolphin "swim" does not allow any swimming with the dolphins, it is meerly a stand and touch session, while you CAN swim with them at Theatre by the Sea about 30 minutes east in Islamorada. The Marina on the property has snorkeling trips twice a day and parasailing trips also. Not much to do for my two teenagers.

  • Liked — Sunset pool
  • Disliked — dated facility, no internet access for guests, not enough to do

We found Hawks to be very nice. the staff was great. they were all helpful and always smiling. It is a bit expensive but you pay for all the stuff they have there. Some we used some we did not (tennis courts). Overall we would be back if the price was right.
