The staff really make the experience here, they've all been helpful and very friendly. You hate to pay so much when to vacation but when you're extended perfect courtesy and hospitality that helps take the bite out of it.The bartenders at The Alma and the Tiki Bar were exceptional. Look for Mike, Martin, Audra, or Shiela.

Very nice resort with a carribean vibe, half way between Miami and Key West. Family oriented with a dolphin cove and large pool for families. Large property that contains villas (time share?) and a central hotel building. Couples have a separate pool area and plenty of space to be on their own. Hotel rooms are nicely furnished and have balconies. Service is top notch and everone goes out of there way to make your stay comfortable. In the evening there is a fire-pit and torches surrounding the pool and they usually have a guitar player providing entertainment. There is a small beach area around a lagoon. Point to remember: this is the Keys and very laid-back and quiet...think Jimmy Buffet. Big negative is the $29 per day resort fee. This is a pet peeve of mine. You are spending plenty of money to stay here, you should not be charged extra for the facilities!

Room Tip: Try to stay in the hotel. The villas can be a distance from the main building. Shuttle service is pr...

We were booked in the hotel at this resort for two nights in January. When we arrived there had been a problem with our booking, not with the hotel but with Hotwire. Steve, the manager at the desk was very helpful and everything was sorted out quickly. We were upgraded to a two bedroom suite. It was very nice. Any complaints I have are small, the light in the hot tub didn't work and the jets we not very good. The bathrooms were very tiny with no space for cosmetics. Also it would be nice if there was coffee in the suite for the coffee maker.

Hawks Cay was a beautiful place. The rooms were nice, clean and very comfortable. Each room had a refrigerator. We stayed in a king room for 2 nights, and switched to a 3 bedroom condo for 4 nights. The condo was on the marina side and had a nice view. There is no room service in the condos, unless you want to pay a fee, which we were not aware until we read it on the refrigerator. The maid came around the third day and asked if we needed towels. We used the washer and dryer in the condo, so bring soap if you plan to stay in a condo.

The main pool had a lot of chairs around, and was heated nicely. There were waiters around the pool to order cocktails and lunch. The drinks were VERY expensive. There is also a tranquility pool for 21 and over which was nice, and they also had pool service.
The restaurants on site were expensive also. The food was good, not great. You are better off going off site and taking a ride to Marathon Key or Islamorada for really great food.

The dolphin cove was also expensive. I wanted to swim with the dolphins, but after watching from the distance, your only choices are to sit on the dock and feed them, or stand in the water and pet them. The rates are on there website. The water was very cold this time of the year, and they do provide wetsuits if you want to go in the water. Just watching them was nice.

The lagoon was also cold, but the scenery was beautiful. In January you cannot plan to swim in the water. Although there were a few people in the water, mostly kids. They had kayaks in the lagoon and were $10 for a half hour. They also had a kid center, which you cannot drop your kids off unless they were 12 and older. It was quite a boring place and not that many kids there. If you wanted to drop your kids off I believe it was $45 a day. They had a pirate ship pool, a basketball court, and daily activities, that were also extra $$.

There was no entertainment at night at all. One night there was a guy playing a guitar by the fire pit. They do not have any music or entertainment at this hotel. It was quite boring. There was one bar open at night and it was small so it got really crowded. They had a lot of conferences there, so the bar consisted of mostly people from over night businesses. Not a place for night life.

Room Tip: I thought all of the rooms were located nicely. If you are traveling with couples, choose the rooms...

My wife and I had a very nice time staying at Hawks Cay. The resort is beautiful, the staff was very helpful and courteous and the Dolphin Experience was memorable. The villa we stayed was not up to par with the resort. It was in need of updating and a new paint job since it looked very much used and tired. It also needed a thorough cleaning.

Room Tip: Make sure when you book that it specifies a water view or not.

We decided to stay at Hawks Cay Resort on our way to Key West. Very nice resort with the hotel as anchor and surrounding Villas that are either privately owned or are a part of a rental pool.

Very beautiful surroundings with the lagoon waters circling the island. They even have some resident dolphins in a conservation program.
In the evening people sit around a fire and listen to a musician playing guitar and singing.
The rooms are okay but the hallways need updating. But I must compliment the entire resort staff on being so friendly and helpful. There is a nice resort shop with great clothing at excellent prices. Also in the shop is a full service coffee and pastry shop in the corner.

We tried the Alma restaurant, the more upscale eatery of the two restaurants. We both tried the fish, Mahi and Florida snapper which were superbly prepared. Our waitress Donalene was an absolute delight checking on us all through our dinner and we enjoyed conversing with her about the Keys.

They also do weddings here on the beautiful grounds. I saw a reception going on while here. There is also a shuttle that provides transportation to the various areas if the resort like the villas, Marina, children's activity area, and tennis courts. There are several commercial fishing boats close by for those wanting to land the big one. Or for a scenic boat ride they offer a sunset cruise as well.

As a grandmother watching a 4 year old, the location of Villa 6011 in the Marina Section was
perfect. Outside our back door we could walk along the pier where lovely yachts were moored,
feed the fish and have an ice cream. Outside our front door and across the lawn was the
children's playground, two pools and an indoor play area very well equipped with everything
from air hockey to lego tables.
So lets start with the inside second floor. The two bedrooms are very small but have very
large beds. The mattresses ( although very comfortable) are so high off the floor ) that you
would want a guard rail ( that was my job) should you have a young child who is prone to
wriggling about. In our bedroom was a washer dryer combination. You would consider that a
plus until you realized that the dryer was not vented to the outside. So the second floor became
a sauna in no time. Of course we discovered this at bedtime. That was after we discovered
the tub drain in the upstairs bathroom was not working. It was subsequently fixed by a very
nice man. OK=that was upstairs.
Downstairs the TV did not work. Another very nice man came and discovered that the remote
control was not calibrated for the TV. Eventually that was fixed. We brought food down
for making breakfast. The oven was set for 350 for baking bacon. Literally after 3 minutes,
we smelled smoke, the smoke alarm went off and the bacon was "blackened." Just to
satisfy ourselves, we put the temperature at 170 (the lowest it would go) and after 2 minutes
had to take it out. We did not call the nice man because an electrician or a new stove is needed!
Although it was pleasant weather, there was a noticeable draft from somewhere. Behind
the sliding door curtain it was easy to see why. The glass had separated from the door
frame which had separated from the track. We did not call the nice man because he was not
"Bob The Builder.'
It is obvious that the arrangement between the private villa owners and rental management
needs a major overhaul.
On the other hand, the staff was fabulous, friendly, and accommodating, A+ for Hospitality.
My daughter and son-in-law had two dinners in the Ocean Room. The signature lobster croissant and the scallop dish were worthy of great praise.

Room Tip: Staying in a Villa could be an adventure in and of itself!!! Check it out first.
