I reviewed Won Lee back in 2007. I can't believe it's been 5 years already since I've been coming here - usually at least three times a month. If you've moved down here from one of the large northern cities (who hasn't?) and you're longing for anything that remotely resembles good Cantonese food as we Americans know it..This is your place.
Won Lee is like a step back in time. It's a big restaurant with plenty of booths, big round tables, and dim lighting. Nothing fancy but it's clean and they're serving wonderful traditional Chinese stand-byes at incredibly reasonable prices. Their repeat trade says it all really. You see the same faces over and over again when you visit. You watch the constant take-out business they do. People coming from all over and with good reason.
You will not find better spare ribs or egg rolls any place in Florida. They even have a Pu Pu Platter (remember them?) for under $10 with egg rolls, spare ribs, beef, shrimp toast, etc. This is a classic old time Chinese restaurant.
Try their Yong Chow Won Ton Soup for 2 - It's under $5 and is fantastic. Loaded with wonderful won tons, big pieces of roast pork, chicken, shrimp and all sorts of crisp Chinese veggies. An amazing bargain to start your meal. Go for the egg rolls and ribs next. Then choose your entrees.
If you like Sweet and Sour Chicken, their version is great. But, you must ask for white meat chicken. It takes a little time, but if you are a lover of this dish, try it. Other very good dishes include their Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. The lunch version (tons of lunch specials) includes fried rice and soup for under $5.00. The dinner size has larger sized shrimp and it's a few dollars more; still an amazing bargin. Other good dishes to try are the Cashew Shrimp, Chow Meins, Lemon Chicken, Roast Pork Ding, Hot Garlic Wings - All their offerings are good.
The service is friendly and usually very prompt. Once in a while, you may have to wait if they get slammed. Relax and observe. The food is worth the wait. The big reason this place is so good? The owners, all from Long Island, including the chefs, know exactly what they are doing. It's just a wonderful Chinese restaurant.
