Best to see by boat - rentals are ok but not much else to do there. Not worth it if you're from out of town. There are many nicer water areas to visit.

I visited with 2 other ladies on a whim because Blue Springs Park was at capacity and we were looking for somewhere very close by to take a short nature walk. We found the parking lot as a "Point of Interest" on our GPS. We parked and took the (free) ferry across to the island. Perfect place for a picnic-- but we weren't there for a picnic (maybe we'll go back).

The only reason I am giving this park 4 stars instead of 5 is that the map provided isn't very helpful for first-time visitors, and when we asked for a bit of direction, a ranger was only moderately helpful. I was there with 2 other ladies, neither of whom dressed appropriately for hiking (the ground was very wet/swampy during our visit)-- I'd like to go back during a cooler part of the year and explore further! This seems like an excellent place to get lost from the world for a while -- but it isn't laid out for ladies out for a stroll.

We had some guests in town from Canada and decided to take them on a day outing on the river by renting a pontoon boat from Hontoon Landing Resort. We have done this several times before and always had a good time.

We pick up some picnic goods before going to Deland. We get some fried chicken, cole slaw, potato salad, cold drinks and we are good to go.

Upon arrival, we took care of the paperwork formalities. We did not have a reservation as we were renting on a weekday and they are usually not busy on weekdays. I recommend the insurance for $25 as you will very likely damage the prop during your outing. We did not have any damage this time but we have had problems in the past.

We then received a "checkout" from their staff on the boat, safety features, speed limits, etc. We loaded up the boat and off we went.

Sightings including alligators, turtles, lots of birds, and one manatee swimming in the river.

Weather was good but we did run into one rain shower. Lasted a few minutes only.

We went to Blue Spring State park and had our picnic lunch there. Bathrooms available.

Overall a very pleasant day.

Hontoon Landing sometimes runs specials on the Pontoon Boat rental during certain months. Our cost came out to about $200 for the day including boat, insurance, taxes, and gas. If you stay at the resort you get a discounted price.

I visited the Hontoon Island State park without having any expectations. The park is assessible by ferry (supplied by the park) only. I walked the path through the woods and visited the Indian mounds of shells. It was an easy, casual walk throughout. The park has shade trees every where. It offers canoe rentals, and has a small shop to purchase food or drink. I would highly recommend a visit if your in the area and want to relax and if you're a camper, I don't think you could go wrong staying here.

An island on the st. johns river that used to be a cattle farm. It is a wonderful park, can only get there by boat or the shuttle boat that the park operates. Trails, indian mounds, primitive cottages to stay ove night in.
