We took some friends with a 5 year old to the island on a Sunday afternoon. The park is operated by the Broward County Parks Department. It is open only on Saturdays and Sundays. Access is by a park department boat leaving from the city park which is located on the north side of the Hillsboro Bridge. There are two trails on the island. Either one is about a twenty minute walk. The island has a ranger station, various grills and picnic tables as well as a covered pavillon. A sandlot playground is located near the restrooms in the center of the island for young children offering swings and a climbing wall. The area has a combination of native and invasive vegetation. Once on the island, one hears the wind and the birds without the sounds of the adjacent urban activities or the intra-coastal boat traffic noise. There is a family of foxes living on the island as well as other animals such as gopher turtles An observation dock on the intra-coastal side has a four seat bench to watch the boats. The noted gangster Al Capone attempted to purchase the island in the 1920's and build a comound, but was unsuccessful. This is a great way to spend a few hours walking sand/dirt trails observing nature on a weekend. Enjoy.
