“Not a real relaxing long weekend”
Reviewed July 19, 2013 via mobile

No Internet whole time, front desk not receptive and had us call AT&T? Wimpy pillows? Got hoodwinked into a free breakfast but turned into a sales pitch??? No chairs near pool. Great location, great beach, great restaurants near by, not as relaxing as stay in Pompano

We stayed at Ocean Walk last week and compared to a lot of places we stayed In Daytona before this property really had the best recreational activities and was next door to the shoppes and restaurants and across from Daytona Lagoon, works great for a family vacation. Staff were nice, check in was a little slow I don't know what resorts have one checkin time for everyone. Most hotels you can check in after 1 or 2 pm but for some reason here you all have to check in at 4 pm or after. The room was nice we had one bedroom ocean front, we really didn't expect a full kitchen so that was nice, a Publix grocery store a couple miles away so that was nice and saved us money. I did her a woman going around telling people she was robbed and rambled on about hiding her purse in the sofa and I asked her "Why didn't you use the in room safe" and she just blankly looked at me. I saw loads of security everywhere, sometimes I wonder why people can't take responsibility for themselves, Daytona probably has no more crime than any other top vacation area. Found some really good restaurants off the beaten path by talking with Staff. There is a locally owned small seafood restraurant not far away call Bay Street Seafood, it was excellent! It was raining one day so we went to the mall, it was nice but had 3 or 4 different Dillards that took up most of the large store space, and I couldn't find a Starbucks at the mall; fortunately there is one next to Ocean Walk.

Room Tip: no room service or spa

We stayed here for a week while attending a dance competition and the nearby Ocean Center.

We have stayed here before and the location is great for events at the Ocean Center. The room was a 2-bed, 2 bath and much more updated than the last time we stayed there. The room was very large, clean had updated appliances and new furniture.

The pools are nice. There is a modest waterslide and a good area for small kids and it is not overly crowded. The proximity to the restaurants in the Ocean Walk mall is great. There is a kids activity area for fees that our kids had a good time in.

Now for the downsides... The front desk staff is indifferent at best. I think a lot of this is that it is a timeshare resort and if you a clearly not a owner they seem to only be only modestly interested in solving your problems. Maybe they could switch places with Timeshare selling staff and then it would probably be like a 5-star hotel. :-)

Also the elevator wait times can be terrible - there are only 4 elevators for the 19-story tower and during busy times - check-in, check-out, pool-clearing thunderstorm - you will wait a long time. We waited almost 45 minutes to get an elevator down at checkout time on a Sunday. Take the stairs you say? Too bad you can only get back in from the stairwell on every other floor - so unless you know you are going to another floor you can get back in on - you may be screwed.

Lastly, it should be noted that security is a significant concern - the doors to the units often don't latch unless you pull the door closed and check that it is latched. Our unit did this and as long a we check it, it did lock. Apparently the local thieves know this and we heard multiple reports of thefts from rooms where the perpetrators had allegedly gone door to door pushing on doors until they found an open room and had items taken. Including a room 3 doors down from us while we were there. We never heard of anyone actually having a room broken into - just from rooms accidentally being left unlocked.

Room Tip: Rooms the lower floors (8 or less) can access the parking ramp directly at the same level and will h...

Our room was broken into today and all of our cash was stolen. Apparently this has been an issue for this resort in recent weeks and they have not been able to catch them. The police did come and file a report but there is nothing that can be done. When we arrived it was obvious that this condo was broken into before by the looks of the door. I am stunned that such a nice place with high security is having this trouble. After it happened I set out to warn people and they had heard of that happening to others this week. If you read reviews you will see it has been happening longer than that. We have 5 children and all of the activities are nice for them but this place is so crowded. If you like peace and quiet do not stay here. They have loud music outside from early morning until late night. I agree with other reviews that if you don't get a pool chair early you won't have one. The staff has been friendly to us since we arrived. We do like the amenities but what fun is that if it's over crowded and your room is broken into with all of your money stolen. If you like plenty to do with lots and lots of people to watch then this might be the place for you but do keep your valuables on you at all times. There might be security everywhere but it's not a safe place. No cameras located on the halls or at rooms. Only in lobby area, garage, pool area, 3 elevator areas and weight room etc. Not nearly as much as you would expect. Hopefully they will catch the theif and this can be a safe place again but for now it's not.

We stayed in a 2 bed/2 bath and the size of the unit was great---balcony, living room, full size kitchen and even a 6 person dining room table. So GREAT choice for large family vacationing together looking for a cost effective option. However when we entered the unit it had a strange smell--almost like the carpet had soured or had a pet stain? The elevators were super slow, pool was ok, pool bar had slow service, weak drinks (at high prices) and food was what you would expect at a truck stop---low end burgers, dogs and most everything else was fried. There is an outdoor mall next door which was good for dinner and drinks but it's definitely the typical Daytona Beach spot where everything is overpriced. For example, we are Floridians but somehow forgot to pack our beach chairs. Walked across the street to a store and they wanted $40 for a basic chair. I guess if you're down from Ohio or Michigan (it seemed like most of the folks were from up North) you just buy it? We knew there was a Walmart 15 min away so we popped over there and bought a similar chair for $15. This hotel is dated and the lobby reminded me of FantasyLand at Disney World--super cool 20 years ago! Good choice if the goal is to vacation with a big group/family and save $!

Room Tip: Our room was quiet on a higher floor but balcony faced north so looked straight across to next build...

I have say I was a bit skeptical about booking our summer vacation here because some of the negative reviews. The long check -ins, no parking, nightmare elevator waits, unfriendly staff, stealing from housekeeping etc...etc..is enough to scare anyone off. I booked through vrbo and was hoping to get a private owner thinking most of these units would be nicer or updated.....I ended up renting a timeshare unit for the week but they choose it for you upon arrival so I had no idea what to expect....... first off check in took less than five minutes, I then parked on the first floor in the parking garage, had no problem getting a luggage cart but the best part was walking into the condo....wow is all I have to say it was absolutely beautiful....I think newly renovated for sure gorgeous furniture, artwork, new appliances in both kitchens ( we had a 2bdrm lockout unit)which had 2 livingrooms, 2 kitchens, 2 king bdrms, perfect for teens.....and stocked with anything you could ever need......had things i don't even have at home in my kitchen. The staff were very friendly, the elevators can get a little busy but its summer and consider the size of the resort. The pools and amenities were awesome , yes people do hog the chairs by the pool , you have to go down to claim one about 8:00 a.m. if you plan on laying out to claim your spot. We had five kids ages 11-21 and there is plenty to do within walking distance and fireworks every Saturday night throughout the summer......overall great family vacation !!!!!

Outside facilities were very pleasant. That's where it stops. Our 3 bedroom suit was in much need of updating. Furniture was old and worn, sofa cushions were flat and uncomfortable. Pots & pans were worn and tefelon was flaking. The parking garage fills to capacity every night and on busy beach nights you will be left with nowhere close to park. No housekeeping after 11:00 so you're out of luck if you need linens. The staff is not helpful and if you need a Manager, he will NOT respond. This was our first and last experience with a Wyndham property. We have stayed at the Hilton next door and that is where we will be in the future.
