“A pleasant slice of old Florida flora & fauna ...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2012

Flamingo Gardens is a nice day trip in the Davie area; an short & easy drive west on Griffin Rd from Rt 1 in Ft. L. Pack your camera and go. It's in an area of open land, horse & riding ranches & other agricultural & farming activity - so a nice change from the beaches for a day. It has plenty of parking, including handicapped spaces & also accessible restrooms.

The entry fees are very reasonable ($18 pp entry + $2 ea if you want to ride the tram around). It's a relatively modest, but interesting enough "old Florida" estate. You can walk it easily or take the tram & listen to the guide enlighten you. A "Wildlife Encounter" presentation is offered & gives a nice respite to sit in the small, shady "amphitheatre" type area & become acquainted w/ some of the creatures. There are many beautiful gardens, trees, plants, birds and creatures to see - and the flamingos are colorful & abundant. There's also a small play area for kids, a modest gift shop and a small snack & beverage area w/ seating.

The original historic Wray home is open for viewing. It's like a doll house inside, as the dimensions seem so small by today's standards, but if you use your imagination you can sense what the heat & humidity of a Florida summer would have been like inside it - and that alone will give you a good idea of old Florida. The home docents are very knowledgeable & happy to share the history of the house, the plantation & the inhabitants.

One of the things we most enjoyed being able to see were the Florida panthers in their spacious exhibit area. Gorgeous creatures! No need to feel sorry that they and the birds & animals are not able to roam free - most all the creatures here were wounded & rehabilitated but unable to be returned to the wild due to their permanent injuries.

If you've ever been to Miami's Fairchild Gardens, Flamingo Gardens is several notches less in splendour, but nonetheless an enjoyable & most affordable place to spend a morning or afternoon.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2012

A short tram ride which was very informative then a walking trip around several exhibits of indigenous animals. some great photo opps. The Wray home in the grounds is well preserved and worth a look.
Expect to spend 2-3 hours on the site, although you can get a worthwhile visit in in an hour if pushed for time.

“Visit Flamingo Gardens if you love nature . . .”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2012

I admit to choking on the $18 admission, with $4 extra for the tram ride. RIght off, I was excited to see several ruddy daggerwing butterflies up close for the first time. The giant champion tree, largest in Florida, was a sight to behold. The endearingly narrated tram ride was worth the extra fare, as my 81-year old father was not equal to the amount of walking required to enjoy this venue. (I kicked myself for not renting a wheelchair for $5.) Luckily, there were plenty of benches along the paths.

Dad, a lifelong, avid birder, enjoyed the aviary, especially the area in which roseate spoonbills, cormorants, herons, and anhingas were being treated for injuries. I was unable to visit some of the attractions due to papa's fatigue, but enjoyed the outing immensely.
