“A Great Everglades Ecotour!”
Reviewed January 25, 2009

My husband and I took the Everglades Day Safari out of Ft. Myers. We absolutely loved it! Our guide, Dr. Manfred Dangel, was unbelieveably knowledgeable with a touch of humor. He made the periods of driving most educational and enjoyable. An hour nature walk took us into a Cypress Swamp where we saw bald eagles, two snakes, a mother alligator and a few generations of her babies at an alligator hole. Many birds were also seen. From there we went to Everglades National Park and took a 90 minute boat ride through the mangroves into Florida Bay and out to the Gulf of Mexico. We saw dolphin and many shore birds. A manatee was also seen as we arrived back at the dock. After a great lunch, we drove through back roads and wound up at Lake Trafford where we boarded an airboat for a truly fantastic hour of wildlife viewing - hundreds of alligators and birds. We will recommend this GREAT trip to all of our northern friends and family!

“Awesome, informative and educational experience”
Reviewed December 6, 2008

I heard of the tour through blogging on a cruise chatboard and was given an e-mail address. I sent an e-mail asking how to book the trip and appropriate clothing required but the response was somewhat disappointing and simply provided the office's main telephone number.

Being reassured by folks on the chat board I was using that the neither the trip ot the guide would be disappointing, I waited until we arrived in Fort Lauderdale and called the number and I am pleased to say the response was extremely pleasant. After answering all my questions, the person on the end of the telephone took our booking and gave very clear and helpful directions to our meeting point, took our cell number incase of emergencies and ensured we had a contact number should the need arise prior to the trip.

We were picked up for the eco tour promptly and the guide, Dwayne ensured my husband knew what time to expect us back.

Though the drive was long to each point (the boat rides and the hiking point), our guide stopped many times to point out wildlife and at any time we asked to stop for a 'photo he was very obliging. There were about 7 folks on the trip and the van was clean, well air conditioned and very comfortable with easy viewing from all seats.

The relaxing boat cruise thru the Everglades is about 1 1/2 hours long and narrated by a concessionaire of the National Park Service - We were thrilled to see dolphins galore and many beautiful birds.

The nature walk was so much fun and our guide showed us so many hidden treasures and unusual foliage as well as answered many questions.

The Airboat ride was on a very shallow everglades lake full of alligators and birds. During this we saw snakes (uggh!), many alligators, fabulous birds and turtles. We also visisted a hammock and heard how the native Indians lived in these communtities.

The rest stops are pretty basic but there are souvenirs to be had too. The restaurant we stop at for lunch is well organised and situated but some on our trip felt they needed a longer break there than was provided.

Overall, this was an amazing experience. There is a lot of driving but all the time it is informative but the time actually experiencing and seeing the beauty of the Everglades is so worth the drive.

Take along a good supply of drinking water and a couple of snacks to keep you going before and after the lunch.

“Long Day of driving for an ECO safari”
Reviewed May 2, 2008

We were picked up in Ft. Myers Beach for the eco tour. We were not told that there would be at least 4 hours of driving to get to the 3 or 4 locations they take you to. The trip officially is an all day trip and they have a strict schedule to keep so don't expect to linger at any one location if there is something very interesting to see.

The relaxing boat cruise thru the Everglades is about 1 1/2 hours long and narrated by a concessionaire of the National Park Service - don't really get to see much except a number of Mangrove islands, an occasional dolphin and a few birds before it is time to return to shore.

The nature walk to explore the diversity of the magnificent area is a very quick 30 minute rush down a wheelchair accessible walkway where you don't see much and don't have time to stop and ask about the plants, etc.

The Airboat ride is on Lake Trafford which is a very shallow everglades lake full of alligators and birds. Unfortunately the ride is only 45 minutes long and the lake is not very big.

“we saw lots of alligators!”
Reviewed April 5, 2008

We spent a long but very worthwhile and interesting day on this eco-safari in Feb/08. The tour took us right across southern Florida from Fort Lauderdale to Fort Myers. Our tour guide/driver, who has lived in the area for many years, talked non-stop about the history and ecology of south Florida. He had no shortage of opinions but also was able to present all sides of the environmental issues facing Floridians related to drainage problems, wildlife habitat, conflicting business interests, native land claims, drinking water, etc. It was a fantastic trip and lesson at the same time. We thought it would just be a tour of the swamps and alligators - which it was - but there was so much more to see and learn. I called the office a week before our tour to arrange it and they were very accommodating to arrange a pickup point closer to our hotel, saving us a huge taxi fare to their regular pickup location. In the evening when we returned, we were dropped off right at our hotel, even though it was in north Fort Lauderdale. I would recommend this tour for those who are interested in learning more about the ecology and history of the area versus taking just a fun air-boat ride.
