Homewood Suites Ft. Lauderdale Airport & Cruise Port

We booked this hotel upon the recommendation of our travel agent. As always she knew exactly what she was talking about! A great night's sleep, close to the port, and an incredibly inexpensive place to park our car while on our cruise. The shuttle to the cruise ship port is also included! #Winning

Very Nice, Quiet, Clean, nice staff. Breakfast was simple and ready when they said it would be, nothing fancy but it was decent and quick. Coffee was good. Kitchenette was fine for what I needed, Alarm did not work, but that must have been my fault. Fortunatly, I also requested a wake-up call and that happened on time.

I liked the place. The Rooms were very clean, well furnished and spacious. Except for the Air Conditioner not powerful enough to cool the large Master bedroom and bathroom, everything else about this place was top rated. It was a really good deal for the price they charged. I would expect to pay more for a place this good.

Stayed for one night before flight out of FLL. Room was very nice. Spacious with full kitchen, and very comfortable bed. Free reception dinner during week was very nice as was the full breakfast buffet in the morning before our flight. All in all, an excellent value. Especially considering the free shuttle service to and from the airport.

Stayed here on points following our cruise on Royal Caribbean. We had a flight early the next morning.

Hotel is about a $20 taxi ride from the cruise terminal. (I thought it would be a touch less, but the hotel is on the opposite corner of the airport). One of the reasons we chose this hotel was because it had shuttle service to the airport.

The rooms were clean. Kitchens were stocked with enough plates and utensils for us to order some food in. We had a 1 bedroom suite that had 2 flat screen TVs. Access to the bathroom is from the bedroom, so may not be ideal for non-family units to share. For us, it didn't matter.

We used the pool. One drawback was that there really weren't enough towels to be found in the pool area. When we asked for towels to be brought to the room, they brought just 2.

Shuttle service to the airport was convenient. We didn't experience breakfast because our flight was so early.

This was our fifth extended stay at this property. We return mostly because of convenience and reasonable price structure. For the most part, our stays have been relatively uneventful, although this review will comment on some of the apparent ongoing issues that the property has.

The property, itself, is very convenient with excellent access to both Interstate 95 and the Florida Turnpike. There is also very easy access to Interstate 595 for trips west to Interstate 75/US 27 and the Florida Gulf Coast. It is also located very close, with easy access, to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. While approaches from the east require a simple right turn from Griffin Road, if you are approaching the hotel from the west, it is much easier to access via the unpaved Anglers Avenue (left turn just before the hotel block) entrance.

There is more than adequate free parking. However, the hotel uses the perimeter of the parking area for temporary storage of its shuttles and these vehicles make for very congested driving. Use caution when driving around the rear of the establishment, as some of the parking lot intersections are blind due to building extensions.

Concerning the hotel staff, we sensed during this stay that many appeared to be uninterested in their work or in the guests of the establishment. In the past, staff friendliness was quite apparent and this set us to wondering what was going on. Unfortunately, we never found out. Of course, we did experience some staff members showing exemplary interest in the needs of the guests and the establishment.

The front desk, on occasion, was inadequately staffed. This caused delays for even simple matters such as accessing the safety deposit box or making purchases from the snack facility. This snack facility, or "Suite Shop" as it is known, is very expensive. There is a Publix grocery store within a five-minute drive on Griffin Road where you can buy just about anything you might need. And, concerning dining, there are very few facilities within walking distance. However, a five- to ten-minute drive vastly expands the culinary options with numerous chain and local operations available, mostly in a southerly or westerly direction from the hotel.

Concerning hotel-provided food, while fairly good evening meals are provided Monday through Thursday, breakfast service could be vastly improved. While seating availability is generally adequate, the food is, at best, mediocre. Of greater concern is the inescapable fact that the traffic flow in the food and beverage area is woefully inadequate. The coffee service is located directly in the midst of the service line and causes a traffic jam. Additionally, the hot breakfast does not include a meat each morning.

If you are a coffee drinker, anticipate that the supposedly "always available" coffee service will frequently be empty and require replacement. This occurred not less than six times during this stay. One time, it took over one half hour for the service to be refreshed. Additionally, coffee during breakfast service is extremely hot and there are no sleeves provided for cups; even when the cup was placed inside another, it was still too hot to handle let alone consume.

While the hotel is ostensibly a smoke-free establishment, smokers tend to congregate just outside the building at all entrances. The second-hand smoke is very noticeable just inside the doorways.

This property, along with all other Hilton properties that we have stayed at, has an incredibly annoying refresh requirement for the hotel's free Internet access. This process demands that each wireless device be reconnected every 24 hours. A new philosophy on this needs to be put into place whereby a guest remaining for more than a 24-hour period can keep all electronic devices attached to the Internet for the duration of the stay. I estimate that a full hour was wasted while waiting for devices to reacquire the service.

Here are some additional comments on the hotel that may be helpful:

---The suite thermostat cannot be set below 66 degrees.

---The chambermaid service is adequate on the whole, although it can be extremely late on some days. On one day, in particular, we did not return until 4:30 PM and the suite had yet to be made up. Also, replacement of certain items (soap, tissues, etc.) may be a hit-or-miss affair.

---The suite has two identical televisions so changes input by one remote control may affect both televisions. And, if you happen to be a political junky with a somewhat left leaning tendency, the hotel TV does not subscribe to MSNBC!

---The public restrooms adjacent to the lobby are often closed for maintenance.

---The elevator service is annoyingly slow. There are two elevators; however one is located at the far end of the hotel from the lobby's location and is very under-utilized. The one adjacent to the lobby is in near-constant use. It also has very loud and annoying music emanating from an overhead foyer speaker. This music is throughout the hotel's entire public space, but nowhere near as annoying as it is in the tight elevator access area.

---The luggage carts have very small wheels and are not very sturdy. They are very difficult to steer on the pervasive carpeted floors.

---There is only a single-width manual doorway from the lobby area to the suite area that causes unnecessary traffic jams. Furthermore, this narrow doorway makes it difficult to maneuver loaded luggage carts.

---There is a perfume odor in the lobby area that is often overpowering.

---The hotel has good laundry facilities, with three washers and three dryers. Cost is reasonable.

All in all, we would not hesitate to stay here again. Much of the hotel's clientele seems to turn over quickly with only a smattering of extended stays. This is probably due to its proximity to Port Everglades and many of the patrons are undoubtedly cruise ship passengers.

Room Tip: Rooms on the east side face the parking lot while those on the west side overlook the pool area.
