While this area is the best area for viewing the manatees, it is overcrowded with tour boats and snorkelers. We have paddled this area many times finding it overcrowded more times than not. That said, it is worth the trip to see the manatees up close. They will swim underneath your boat (almost touching). I would rate the trip higher if there were less boats and snorkelers in such a small area.
We put in at Hunter Spring Park heading around Pete's Pier going under the bridge towards Three Sisters. (just follow the crowd)

We spent most of our time swimming with the Manatees in Three Sisters Springs and what a joy we had with them, watching and observing. It's a great place to enjoy the clear springs even if there are no manatees to observe.

We went twice. We rode our bikes in the first time then came back with the kayak to swim with the Manatees. It is amazing! Hundreds of Manatees! They have done a great job protecting this area. Thanks to the Park Service, FWC, and the volunteers!

A truly special place! The spring and the manatees are amazing! Today there were more manatees here than we've ever seen before! It is so sad to see that most have scars from being struck by boats - boaters please slow down!!! These gentle giants need our protection! They come to Three Sisters Spring to recover from the cold and rest! Fellow visitors, please, please observe them quietly - please don't approach them, don't harass them and never surround them!

This was our second time back, despite 39 degree air temps the first time. Keep in mind the water stays at 72 degrees year-round, so staying in the water as long as possible is a must when its cold. The math is easy - its warmer in the water than out!

This past December (2013), it was in the 50's in the early morning - very comfortable. The boats are equipped to keep you warm, and they (Bird's) serve hot coffee and hot chocolate on an enclosed boat. By the end of the trip, it was very comfortable out of the water, as the air temps were rising naturally.

Make sure you get up for the early 'Bird's" trip - they put you on the water and near the manatees just after sunrise. Your the first one's there. It's an awesome experience.

Also Don't miss the Three Sisters spring - its a must see. The visibility is world class and the manatees love to hang out when the water in the Gulf is cold. Keep in mind the traffic can be busy during the Christmas vacation. Try and schedule a week-day.
