“Lunch at the Highlander”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

If you are spending some time in Crystal River swimming with manatees or kayaking in the clear waters of King's Bay, or if you are just passing by on your way to another spring or running errands, and your stomach start convoluting for a bite, consider one of this in a row of excellent restaurant and coffee shops in Citrus Avenue. Everything on the menu is carefully planned and made fresh, the presentation was lovely and the amounts just right. The savory sweet potato soup was a hearty, comforting starter, followed by colorful fresh salad, not just a bunch of lettuce, but a nice variety of tender greens, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and tangerine, accompanied by the most delicious honey mustard dressing. Tempted by a good looking ciabata cranberry chicken sandwich, but decided on a golden, beautiful spinach feta quiche. The pomegranate green tea, so refreshingly simple, not too sweet, just right. Had to try a dessert and had a hard time choosing scrumptious, home made tarts, pies, sconces and cakes. I settled for a creamy but light rice pudding, not too sweet or overpowering with real whipped cream dollop that was light as a cloud, light as a dream. The food was excellent, soups and quiche hot and sandwiches and salads, cool and crisp, but the overall experience was tremendously pleasing due to the efficiency and friendliness of the entire staff and the pleasant and comfortable surroundings. You will have your choice of indoor sitting or outdoor terrace under a canopy of huge oaks, on the deck or patio and enjoy some Irish music while you wait for your delicacies of the day. Congratulations Highlander, no wonder your place had such a crowd.

“A touch of Scotland”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

Probably one of my most favorite places to eat. No matter what I order I am pleasantly surprised how good it is. The bacon Brie sandwich or the coronation chicken salad, wonderful. If you go early enough you can purchase some scones to take home. Family and employees are lovely people.

“Great menu!”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

Yummy lunch menu with homemade soups, salads and sandwiches. Outside porch dining an option. Live harp music on the porch the day I went. Now that Cafe on the Avenue has closed, this is the next best! .

“What a surprise this place is!”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

Simply delicious. Not an extensive menu, but everything is fresh and perfect. The family that runs this place certainly knows food. Soup, sandwiches, quiche, salads and oh, my - the desserts. Even the coffee is better than what you would expect. After your trip to Homosassas State Park, this is the place for lunch!

“Better Than Mom's Lemon Meringe Pie!”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

On our last visit to this area, we ate here several times both for lunch and breakfast. Each time was exceptional. I particularly enjoyed the quiche and fresh fruit; sandwiches and breakfast croissants were excellent, also. But the lemon pie -- oh my! -- It's the best we've ever had! We particularly enjoyed meeting the owners, Scots who came to the area from the highlands of northern Scotland. One balmy Saturday morning, father and son entertained with their bagpipes. What a thrill!
