“Small Gulf Beach, Close to Gainesville”
Reviewed May 28, 2012

Not my favorite Florida gulf beach, but it is only a short drive from Gainesville. The water is typical, calm, warm gulf water. Nice sand. Gentle waves. I like that it has nice changing and restroom facilities. Since it is a small beach, it can get crowded in the afternoon on weekends. They have a food vendor so you don't have to bring a picnic. For a beach experience, it is fine.

“Off the Beaten Path Beach on the Gulf”
Reviewed May 28, 2012

Fort Island Gulf Beach is an off-the-beaten-path 1,000 foot wide sandy beach on the Gulf of Mexico nine miles west of Crystal River, Florida. Mostly a "locals" beach although I've encountered Europeans and other travelers there. Modern restroom/changing facilities and an outdoor shower. Ten covered picnic tables available on a first come first served basis but in my experience folks are more than willing to share. The closest motels and resturants are in Crystal River but the Cookin' Good catering truck is on station at the beach with a variety of sandwiches, snacks and drinks at reasonable prices. Fort Island Gulf beach is not for everyone but it's a great stop for those traveling the great Florida west cost highway 19/98 and folks who live in North Central Florida looking for the closest sandy bottom Gulf beach.

“view of "nuke" plant”
Reviewed May 21, 2012

It is a clean little beach with clean fascilities, but a bold view of Nuclear plant. Not pretty! Not something you wish to view while swimming or sunbathing. May make you worry that you will glow in the dark after a day at the beach.
