“Nice. Not bad, just nice.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2008

My wife and I stayed here for four days in October 2008.

The Westin Coral Gables is a nice place. I attended a business meeting here and was quite pleased with the room. However, I think anyone visiting the area from out of state (like us) will be disappointed.

In the real estate world, it comes down to location location location. And this hotel doesnt have it. Sure, its in a nice place, surrounded by Starbucks, and a some shopping, a few banks..etc.. However it offers none of the typical Miami / Florida outings. The beach is a half hour away by cab, and a one-way trip will cost you 40 bucks for a taxi.

Second, the pool, while beautiful, is on the third floor, and surrounded by the hotel, so tanning, or sun bathing is only an option about two hours a day.

Third, my pet peeve for "business traveler" hotels is the lack of internet availablitly. The Westin hits you for 12 bucks a day for internet access, and then tacks on another 19 for parking. Thus, the typical business traveler needs to add 31 bucks a day for their "amenities".

My thoughts, blow this place off, and stay at one of the 100 art deco places in South Beach - cheaper, walk to the beach, free internet, etc. Check out my other reviews for some suggestions.

Again, not bad, but just not worth the rather extravagant price.

  • Liked — clean, comfortable, typical Westin.
  • Disliked — location is just AWFUL !

Large, fully decorated rooms. Very comfortable beds, bathroom, chairs.

Super service by both the front deks and the concierge!

The hotel is located at a very good location, just around the Magid Mile, with restaurants, shops and parking.

Avoid the valid parking and the garage next door. There's a public garage just a few minutes further for half the price.

  • Liked — Rooms are super
  • Disliked — Restaurant is a bit old fashioned.

I stayed at this hotel for just one night on a quick business trip to Miami. The staff I encountered were gracious. The standard rooms are exceptionally spacious, nicely decorated and very comfortable. The standard room I was in would easily pass as a suite in another hotel.

I ordered room service which arrived promptly and just as ordered; I also enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the hotel restaurant the next morning.

The meeting space and other public areas were well kept and very attractive. I did not get a chance to see much of the surrounding area, but it sounds very high end.

I would definitely recommend this hotel.

  • Liked — The decor and comfort of the rooms.
  • Disliked — The lobby on the second level is slightly awkward but no big deal.

Overall I was very pleased with this hotel. Not knowing the area, I was somewhat leary of the reputation of staying in downtown Miami. Though I'm happy to report that the Westin Coral Gables is in a very nice, seemingly safe, area of suburban Miami. One benefit to the hotel's location was the 15min ride to the University of Miami. Also, there are plenty of great restaurants (both local flavor and national chains) within walking distance.

AC POWER Had plugs in the lamps, and an outlet next to the bed. Also a workstation at the desk.

BATHROOM Stylish, but not as clean as I hoped. Heavenly bath with outstanding water pressure.

BEDDING Very comfortable, Westin Heavenly Bed set can be a little too bulky for the Florida heat

CLEANLINESS Overall pretty clean, just found the bathroom not to be as spotless as I'd hoped.

INTERNET $9.95/+$.70 tax day, wireless

LOBBY I was amazed at the Colonnade Office Building, reminded me of "Old Florida," as if Henry Flagler himself would be sitting at a chair by the grand piano in the lobby

PARKING $22/day valet, self parking next door, staff at one point lost my keys at the valet, 15mins late for work

POOL Pool centered within hotel on 2nd floor, my guest room opened up to the pool.

STAFF Very pleasant, but major language barriers. The concierge accepted a FedEx delivery for me, but I spent 15mins trying to articulate that they signed for it, and ultimately had to grab their received packages list and point out my name to them. A little frustrating.

TELEVISION 16x9 Analog SD TV, with good assortment of channels.

Booked our room through hotwire.com, and we were very pleased with this hotel. We got a huge room, with high ceilings and a great view. The staff was good and we found the location to be pretty good as well.

Stayed with my wife and teenaged daughter in a 'townhouse' style suite. On the positive side, the location is great and the building is very impressive. The hotel shares the building with offices, and check in on the 2nd floor (very nicely done). The front desk staff, in fact all staff, were very friendly, responsive and helpful. The room rates are very reasonable for a Westin. We arrived after 10:30pm and the late night room service was good, albeit a bit expensive for a sandwich & a fruit plate. Breakfast in the restaurant was very good and the price was a good value. As with all Westin's the bed was very comfortable. 2 nice flat screen tv's.

There is no major thing that failed, but a lot of little things that showed a lack of attention to detail or poor staff training. The room was on the surface cleaned well, but there was an "exhaust" mark on the ceiling from an air vent. There was no book to explain the amenities in the hotel, and the room service menu was photocopied on plain paper with torn corners and obviously not replaced in months. When we asked for the pull out couch to be made up, a very nice person dropped off the bedding but didn't offer to make up the bed. There was no shower cap in the bathroom. The lighting in the bathroom was poor. At times when we were waiting for our car to be brought from valet parking, we could hear the bell staff arguing about other staff in the hotel.

As an aside, the 'townhouse' style suite might not be for everyone. There is a very narrow spiral stair from the sitting room to the bedroom. We only had carry on baggage and it was not easy carrying it up the spiral stairs. Anyone carrying a lot of weight will not feel comfortable on the very narrow stairs. It worked for us, but might not for everyone.

Based upon all the other good reviews, maybe our experience was not typical. Overall, the ingredients were there for a "four star" experience, but the little details made it fall short. Still not a bad price deal for a three star experience, but not what I usually expect from Westin.

  • Liked — Great location, friendly staff.
  • Disliked — Too many little things missing
