“Beautiful and relaxing resort in the heart of Disney”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

This resort is a beautiful resort 10 minutes from all the Disney Parks. You don't even have to leave the resort to enjoy yourself. 5 beautiful pools, a lake, free shuttles to the parks and big lock out suites. We had a two bedroom unit with another one bedroom lock out. We had plenty of room for 8 adults. We had our sons, there friends and girl friends with us. Plenty of room, and enough things to do, to keep them busy. They are from the age of 19-22 years of age. The week before we checked in. The first buildings had a sink hole, and one big building fell into the sink hole.We got very scared about this awful event. The resort was very good about, explaining the problem and mad sure no one could get close to the site. It is such a big resort, that it didn't make a difference that they closed three of the buildings. Great place to stay and relax.

Room Tip: We had building 403, directly across from the lobby, tennis courts, lake, and two pools. We had a gr...

Our Stay was from 8/3/13-8/8/13. Check in was painless compared to many other resorts I've been to. We were assigned to building 408 on the 3rd floor overlooking one of the smaller pools and a small lake. We were in a 2 bedroom 2 bath and it was very spacious and very comfortable. The pool wasn't the biggest but it was never over crowded due to the fact that there were pools everywhere at this resort. The buildings were clean and well kept, and the entire property was beautifully landscaped. Fortunately, we checked out 3 days prior to the sinkhole ordeal, and it doesn't suprise me that everyone got out of the buildings safely due to the security guard warning everyone to get out because all of the staff members that I encountered were nothing but thoughtful, courteous and helpful. The main clubhouse was a short 3 minute walk from our unit and there was an abundance of activities for both parents and children. The main pool had a great bar and there was another bar/restaurant grill a short walk away from there. There was a beautiful large lake with a great sandy beach area and a very nice boardwalk and large gazebo. There were pontoon boats, large and small, jet skis, and small "speedboats" which traveled about 15 mph (great fun for the kids that don't have a drivers license.) We rented a small pontoon for my wife and I, 1 jet ski for my son and the jet boat for my daughter and neice, between that and fishing, they loved it. We fished the lake several times and caught a minimum of 3 nice sized bass each time, catch and release of course. There is a free shuttle to and from all Disney parks that leave twice a day at 8 and 10 am (be on time), the Disney grounds are only a few minutes away, it's a full sized city bus style shuttle with Disney graphics all over but be prepared because it stops at EVERY Disney park going and coming back at the end of the day. The bus picks up and drops off on the main road to the resort, just about 200 feet to the left of the main clubhouse. There are literally hundreds of restaurants within 5 miles in either direction of highway 192, (our new favorite is Boston Lobster Feast Kissimmee location) also several grocery stores and a Wal Mart very nearby. I plan on coming back to this resort each time I return to Orlando, which will be soon.

Room Tip: Ask for an upstairs room, otherwise you will hear children running above you most of the night.

Time share sales people a bit annoying. Other than that, great location, close to all Disney Parks. Restaurants galore on hwy 192... although not in resort;only one for salads and drinks.Highly Recommend Little Italy Restaurant, Boston Lobster feast and Twistee Treats a large ice cream cone site.

Stayed last week of August in a two bedroom unit. Despite the first building being swallowed up by a sink hole. My family had a nice relaxing week. There were a few News Choppers hovering around the resort no doubt taking video of the unit that had sunk in the ground. Quite something to see. Amazed that no one was hurt or killed. It did not effect out trip as we where in the 500 block. Not interested in the Time Share pitch. Got two phone calls early morning asking if we would like to come? Leave the phone off the hook. The sales staff really tried to get us to the presentation. I realize it's their job but how many times can you say no? They where not to happy afterwards but moving on. Resort is clean and the grounds well maintained. Staff where friendly, hats off to the activities staff. They kept the kids happy and busy. The pools where very relaxing. Enjoyed the food at the bar and grill. Pizza was excellent. There is a Publix close by. Room needed some updating but it was clean and spacious. All the comforts of home. They have a lake with a nice little beach. Kids had fun on the inflatable rides, slides, trampoline. You are 15 min from Disney. Close to lots of shopping. Outlet mall about 30 min away. So overall it was a great trip. The goal was to relax and we did. Don't let the sink hole deter you.

I will begin with.....THE SINKHOLE. Unfortunately we were visiting when this misfortune took place. We watched as a building crumbled into the ground less than 150 yards from where we were staying. It was an eerie feeling for sure--not clearly the fault of the resort. However, the aftermath and lack of communication led me to be very disappointed.
We were moved into the hotel on the front of property for the remainder of the night and told we would be contacted first thing in the morning. Still waiting for that call! Did speak with front desk number of times and the RCI rep on site but .....no real response given. How hard is a mass call out to do on the voice mail system informing guests of the status of the sinkhole. Or an information board in the lobby that had updates added to, would have been an idea, so that desk staff didnt always have to field a thousand questions, of which they didnt have or know answers to. We were never called to inform us status of our building or even to make sure we were ok. I was not looking for a handout---although many folks were given compensation or moved and some of these folks werent even staying near the hole. I guess being polite didnt pay off and I should have screamed and kicked up a fuss like many others! We did get a call about the "breakfast". Priorites seemed a bit out of wack!

Timeshare tours continued even in the wake of the aftermath--which again seemed a little crazy.

As for our room--although spacious enough, it did come with a few critters--some dead and some alive. I wonder if the dead cockroach is still on window sill in the bedroom--likely. The raccoons that live in Building 107 and came out of the hole under the soffett each afternoon--although entertaining were a bit messy and noisy!

My boys thought the beach area would be a fun thing--until we found out it costs 12.00pp a day to use the rafts, slides etc... and 15.00 to rent a paddle boat for half hour seemed a bit steep. Or you can buy a family pass for 255.00 for the week! ARE YOU SERIOUS!?

The pool near 500 series building was a nice area to spend some time

Overall, I think management needs to work on their communication skills. Obviously they can't predict a major disaster happening, but having a plan in place for any serious happening would be a good idea, and keeping your clients and staff informed would be step #1

We would not return

Summer Bay Resort 8/24 to 8/31/2013
Checked in 8/24/13 to Summer Bay Resort at 3:00 PM. Our unit was in building 205 right on the lake and close to the clubhouse. Great location. Close, but not too close to the pool and activity center.

Check in was painless and relatively quick. We declined their offer of 2 tickets to area shows and a $50.00 gift card to do the ‘sales presentation’.

This is an RCI Gold Crown and for the most part, our accommodations were very satisfactory. We enjoyed a two bedroom two bath unit which had a large living room dining room area, large bathrooms and although not brand new, comfortable beds and furnishings and laundry in the room. Living room TV was a nice large flat screen and those in the bedrooms were also good size flat screens. Closet and dresser space was a little limited and could be an issue if you come with your family.

Ours was a ground floor unit and we have a great view of the lake out our patio double sliding glass doors with a little table and chairs on the lanai.

One issue is the lack of insulation or noise dampening in the ceiling to separate us from our upstairs neighbors. There is free Wi-Fi in the rooms, however, for $10.00 you can ‘upgrade’ to higher speed. The free is adequate for email albeit ‘a little slow’ for much else.

There was a mix of free and paid activities throughout the week (most seem geared towards children) and a restaurant on site which offers a fairly good variety of sandwiches, salads, pizza, drinks, soup, and ice cream. There were several pools to choose from and gas grills out back of our unit. All our contact with the activity staff was always pleasant and friendly.

We will definitely consider returning as we had a very enjoyable and relaxing time in a delightful resort. The location (1 mile east of US 27 on US 192) is close to most anything you would want or need. One last caveat, bring your own TP, there is terrible.

I requested a second floor room overlooking the lake. I was given bldg 206 room 204A. We went in the room to look it over and at first it looked ok. But the balcony was floor was covered in green mold and the ceiling was loaded with spiders. We arrived late and were promised it would be taken care of. The next morning a crew was power washing and bleaching the balcony. During the night we realized the bathroom sink was clogged and the sink in the kitchen was leaking under cabinets. A light bulb in one of the bathrooms was out. All was fixed promptly. Two days later I was going onto the balcony and the sliding glass door handle fell off and the refrigerator was't getting cold enough. Someone was sent immediately to fix both. I was also told that if the refrigerator didn't get cold after it was clean a new refrigerator would be delivered. The bathrooms needed to be bleached due to the mildew and all cabinets, kitchen and bathrooms needed to be cleaned with Old English. They had food and tooth paste all over them. As an owner I expected a place that is rated Gold Crown to be immaculate. I'm on vacation and don't want to wait around for maintenance and housekeeping to make repairs and clean, this should be done before my arrival. I believe management needs to step up to the plate and review their maintenance and cleaning practices. After a guest checks out and after the room is clean a manager should be going into the rooms with a check list and giving it a complete going over. Do all the lights work? Is the balcony clean? Is the starter kit available? Are there cobwebs on the hanging lap over the table?

As regard to the "validation of your parking pass" what a gimmick. It is just a ploy to get you to go the the "welcome breakfast" where they try to sell you more timeshare. Don't go. Also pull the plugs on your phone so you are not pestered during your vacation by sales people.

The amenities at the resort are plenty. My kids like the miniature golf, even though it was $5 per person per game. The pool by the club house was great and overlooked the lake. This pool is open 24 hours a day and you wouldn't believe the people that swim in the middle of the night. Disney is about 10 minutes away and Publix is around the corner. The sink hole was an interesting sight.

I really would have given a much better rating if the room didn't have so many issues and management kept up on the overseeing of maintenance.
