We had a 3-day break from the parks of Orlando between 25/06 - 28/06/04. Having read previous reports on this site we were of a mind to change our reservation, but we're glad we didn't.

The Hotel is in an A1 location, easy to find from the main highway and right on the beachfront. All the facilities that you need are within walking distance. The beach is kept spotless, the chairs and umbrellas are well organised and the drink / food service on the beach is excellent. Throw in a beach bar, a poolside bar and cafe, and the main restaurant overlooking the beach (and the sunsets) and it really is a special place.

Our experience of the food was good, breakfast a touch expensive at $11.95 for the full hot buffet and $7.95 for the cold buffet, but what's the point in saving a few dollars when you have to go looking for it.

We ate at the Hotel on two of the nights and were not disappointed, service was good and very attentive the first night. Cost for 2 + 2 including drinks was around $120.

For a top quality dinner go to Beachcombers opposite the Hotel, our best meal in 2 weeks in Florida and a wine list that is far too long and exhaustive to make the choice easy.

The Hilton does look slightly ageing against other newer buildings, but that should not mark it down. The reception areas and bar / restaurant were all clean and well maintained as were the bedrooms. We had inter connecting rooms which were fine, and we had no issues with cleaning, maid service or comfort. The air-con unit in the room is noisy, but did not prevent sleep.

So far as position was concerned we were on 5th floor overlooking the main street and the Marina. We had spectacular views over the inlet area and some good views of the nightly thunderstorms over Tampa. There doesn't seem to be many rooms with good views over the gulf, and these are probably premium rooms so I would recommend the Marina view. The elevations overlooking the air-con condensor units sited on a low level flat roof area appear to be the worst.

The level of service was excellent from the car park attendants on arrival to the front desk, the bar and restaurant staff.

In terms of cost, it isn't a cheap Hotel. In addition to the rack rate there is State tax and Bed tax to pay but that is hardly the Hilton's fault. Parking at $5 / day for that location is not unreasonable, considering what some London Hotels charge for parking.

There does seem to be a charge for everything (almost even for "the view of the Sunset from the Pool") but you can keep a check on your Bill via the interactive TV service in your room.

Also, as Brits we find the 15-20% tipping expectations in the US obviously adds significant cost to the 'final bill'.

All-in all there may well be some that would find the Hilton to be a lower standard than they would expect or compared to other Hiltons. I would compare it to any other 4 star Hotel that one may find at a beach resort in Europe with the addition of a 5 star location.

Do not be put off by some of the reports that may be posted on this site. We are glad we weren't. However, it should be noted that we stayed for a short period, a longer stay may cause disgruntlement as after a few days there is not much to do other than the beach and pool life and our kids were bored after a few days away from the thrills of Orlando.
