The Clearwater Beach Hotel is actually two older hotels right across the street from each other that are now run by the same office. We stayed in the two story building.
The location is great and so is the price. It's not labeled as a "Resort" so the price you pay is as advertised plus normal tax. That is refreshing. The hotel has strict anti-party policies but It is just a very short walk from Shepards. This is great as you can have a good time at Shepards and then walk back to a quiet room when you are done with the music and partying etc...
The pool area was nice and being an older pool, the deep end was actually deep at 8 1/2 feet. The pool area at the 4 story building was real nice and right on the canal. Both buildings have the rooms open to the outside. The two story building has small divider walls on the outside between the rooms and a couple outdoor chairs and a small table for each room so you can sit outside. The staff was very nice. There is a washer / dryer but they looked real rough and were right out on the backside of the office building and a couple feet from the street and sidewalk.
The room we had was a single King and was very clean. The updating was done rather well. The hotel is older so there are some things that just cannot be changed (Without massive cost) such as the room size and layout. The bathtub / shower is smaller as is the whole bathroom. There is a window instead of a vent fan. The vanity and countertop were new and nice however, the toilet could have used a new seat not just another layer of paint...
There were a few downsides however with our room which may have just been particular to our room. The older floor mount air conditioner unit had a very loud start and stop noise when the compressor cycled. The tiny fridge had a nice little pop when it went on and off as well. It was a shame since it was so nice and quiet at the hotel in general. It made it an exercise in timing to try to get to sleep while the AC was running. Also, the toilet had a slow leak and kept filling every 30 min or so.
Interestingly, the bed was probably the most comfortable I have slept on in a hotel and the linen was very nice and seemed to be 100% cotton. Everything except the darn AC and toilet was conductive to a good night's rest.
