Owner description: Ruth Eckerd Hall's near perfect acoustics have received rave reviews from artists, technicians and audience members since opening in 1983. Combined with state of the art equipment, comfortable amenities and world class entertainment, it's no wonder that it has been recognized as one of Tampa Bay's best concert halls numerous times as well as a finalist for Pollstar's Theater of the Year twice. In 2003, the Hall's audience chamber received a complete refurbishment, its 2,180 seats were reconfigured to accommodate more patrons with disabilities, and lobby and restrooms were expanded.Ruth Eckerd Hall has continental-style seating. Almost every patron prizes a center seat and continental-style provides the maximum possible. There are no support columns, no obstructed views. Seating is sloped and staggered. For safety and comfort, the aisle space is wider than traditional layouts; entry and exit can be made while patrons remain seated. There are 14 sets of double doors leading out from the audience chamber. With this configuration, a full house can be cleared in a matter of minutes.Among the original community leaders who conceptualized building a performing arts center this side of Tampa Bay, was Jack Eckerd. During construction, Mr. Eckerd designated a significant contribution as a birthday gift to his beloved wife, Ruth, making the dream a reality. The Hall proudly bears her name.

This was a first time for many of our group of twelve friends that decided to see the recent Bowzers Holiday oldies show. Performers were excellent. The show was much longer than I expected. Only a couple of things went wrong. One, the sound system went shrill a few times. Second, the seating arrangement in the hall is not the greatest. Long rows with no center aisles. I would think that should there need to be an emergency evacuation, there could be some scary moments Even with that, I would attend another show there.

Although they get in some great acts and musicians in, the sound quality is poor. I have been to several concerts and the sound is "tinny" especially when there is a piano involved. It definitely is not balanced and is high on the top end.
The other problem I have with this place is the layout of the seats. If you are seated in the middle of the hall, you will have to cross over serval people just to get to your seat. God forbid if there is a fire because it would've a nightmare exiting this place.

The other complaint has to do with the management of the crowd. During one of the shows that I have attended, two older ladies were smoking pot and nothing was done about it. They weren't even being sneaky with it and were smoking it in front of security. Just remember that this is an indoor venue !

The past experience was the deal breaker for me. I went to go see Harry Connick Jr and two drunk ladies that were sitting in front of me talked the WHOLE time! Since they were smashed, there voices carried. The gentleman next to them asked them to be quite and they told him to go sit somewhere else. I got up and found an usher and told them about their bad behavior. He did tell them to be quite, but they continued to talk and make fun of the guy sitting near them.
Honestly, you would have though that they would have been asked to leave considering their poor behavior.

Based on the sound quality at the two concerts and the way the audience is allowed to act, I will
not go back there again. I have been to MANY venues around the county and this is one of the worst places to go to see a concert. If you like rude behavior and poor sound quality, please go here. Trust me, save your money and listen to the music at home, it's a much more pleasant experience.

Those of us who live in the Tampa Bay area have a wonderful gem in our backyard - Ruth Eckerd Hall! From enjoying classical music by Yo-Yo-Ma, Joshua Bell, Itzak Perlman, our own Florida Orchestra to the jazz of Chris Botti and Harry Connick, Jr., rock or country music - REH has something for every music fan. There are musicals and comedians and a relaxing way to bringing in the New Year with the Vienna Orchestra - all at a venue with great seats in various price ranges to fit anyone's budget.

After reading the reviews, I expected much more from this venue. The acoustics were less than "near-perfect". Distortion and reverb were annoyingly present during the louder portion of the performance. The constant crowd movement as they negotiated the row spilling beer and nachos was also less than ideal.
