“Family getway at the Marriot Sand Key”
Reviewed March 19, 2007

Great place to stay! We loved the pool and the kids club. The room was nice but we are opting for a condo next time. With having three kids and two adults it gets a bit tight after about a week. The shops next door were okay. We drove to the beach instead of waiting for the hotel shuttle. Clearwater Beach is better than Sand Key Beach for the kids.

We stayed at the Marriot Sand Key for a week in March 2007. Removed from the congested area of Clearwater Beach, the Marriott is a nice facility with a good range of hotel services. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our suite was clean, comfortable and adequate. The beach just across the highway is absolutely spectacular for long walks, sunsets and quiet times. Pool facilities were also excellent. Good restaurants within an easy drive. The fitness center equipment did not always work (no incline on the treadmill, stairmaster broke, etc.). The business center was not reliable and staff was not readily available to assist. For the price, it was especially irritating that they charged an extra $10 per day for in-room internet service. But overall the perfect weather and beautiful beach gave us good reason to look beyond the few annoyances.

  • Disliked — Fitness equipment needs repair; extra charge for internet service; unreliable business center

What a great place to host a meeting. The most outstanding feature of this property is the staff. So unbelieveably well-trained! Everyone is so helpful and friendly. The rooms are quite adequate (having a small suite is nice)....but the rooms are starting to look a little "tired" and the bathrooms are very small. But no big deal.....really! The conference facilities are excellent. Food on property is above average for hotel food. The pool area is also very nice. All in all, a very nice stay.

Some local recommendations. The beach at Sand Key Park (directly across the street) is wonderful. It goes on for miles. Nearby restaurants that were wonderful include: Columbia, Marlin Darlin and Island Way Grill. Every one of these is outstanding. For a good and inexpensive breakfast, definitely skip the hotel and head down the boardwalk to Maggie Mae's. A good breakfast at a great savings!

We'll be going back next year for a meeting of the same group! I just wish I could afford a condo in Sand Key so I could visit regularly!

Just got back from a business meeting at this facility--Jan 28-30. The hotel is very clean and welcoming. Great views of the Intercoastal and the Gulf (could see both from my room). The best feature of this property is the customer service they provice. Everyone at every incounter was friendly and helpful and seemed so happy that you had chosen their hotel for your stay.

I'm going back in six weeks for another business trip and I am very much at ease about thsi future visit because the first trip went so well.

After booking through Marriott, I saw some poor reviews and was concerned. However, knowing the chain's reputation for service, we went forth with plans. Upon arriving, the appearance from the outside was a bit concerning; looked a bit run down. However, once we pulled up to the valet, everything was very clean and service was wonderful. We were immediately checked in, given a tour of the amenities, and offered a shuttle across to the beach. We chose to settle in, instead. Yes, the suites are smaller than most Marriott suites, and the bathroom is tiny. However, the linens, carpeting and furniture were all very clean. We stayed on the 10th, so maybe they've been redone, but it all seemed relatively new. The pool area is very nice, with available cabanas - we chose to stay in the sun (no crowd at all). Some areas, such as the locker rooms were being redone - which should only help. Don't bother with the "boardwalk", as it's simply a few shops that run along a run-down walkway. The service couldn't be beat - staff was always stopping to chat, or trying to go out of their way. I recommend including thebreakfast in your stay, and it ends up being cheaper than the menu. It's a great way to start the day. (Some earlier reviews stated that it was pricey.) The steakhouse is, however, pricey. The service was very slow the evening we went, but they had a large party right before us, so the kitchen got backed up. My filet was alright - presentation was weak. Don't think I would pay to eat there for dinner again. However, the staff was, again, wonderful.
The best way to access the beach is the public walkway almost directly across the street. Yes, it's a few minute walk, and if that's an issue, the shuttle to Sand Key is great! If you want to be picky, you will find a few small faults with the property. However, if you just relax, and enjoy, it's great! I think a clean suite with breakfast is worth the $260 a night..........and the pool is nicer than the Sheraton's!

We (me, wife and 2 kids ages 13 and 11) stayed at the place during early August 2006. We were very impressed with the place and have even made reservations for August 2007.
Okay - lets start:-
Staff - very friendly and helpful especially on the front desk, restaurant and outside bar however all were better than average.
Rooms - clean, well furnished, great views of the Intracoastal, a bit small compared to some but not a real issue. Our first room had a very strong chemical/dry cleaning smell that attacked the back of the throat. We were immediately given another room, two doors down so as not to inconveneience us too much with carrying stuff.
Restaurant and food - great breakfasts and superb dinners but a bit pricey. Great views again over the Intracoastal - v.friendly staff.
Pool area - v.nice but can get a bit crowded with lots of games going on - not enough space given over to those who just want to swim or laze around.
Outside bar - great place, good views, great staff (especially Jennie).
Location - good. Short walk across the street and through the Sheraton car park takes you to Sand Key beach or you can hop on the hotel shuttle (like a golf cart) that will either take you to Sand Key Park or the Sheraton car park. The driver will then offer you free water, towels even a bucket and spade if he has them. There is a trolley bus that stops outside the hotel that heads to various destinations. There are also a couple of good restaurants (the Columbia is one of them).and shops next to the hotel.
All in all a great experience for the four of us.

We really enjoyed the Marriott Suites Clearwater Beach. It was clean, the staff was friendly, the pool was wonderful with it's waterfall, and the long walkway along the water is great. The distance to the Sand Key Park across the street is not really a problem if you have a car, or ask the hotel staff to take you in their golf cart. The beach at the park is just wonderful. It's uncrowded. This hotel is very calm and peaceful as compared to the hotels a few miles to the north which have a party atmosphere. We did drive up to the Clearwater Beach waterfront also. It's a little more congested, but is nice. I just had a wonderful time here and would recommend it to anyone. And, Maggie Mae's small restaurant is great. It's on the boardwalk. The only time the pool was crowded was Sat afternoon because there were weddings, etc; but even then it was great.
