“Fun time at Clearwater!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2013

Our family stayed at the Marriott this past week and had a great time! This was our first visit to Sand Key and the hotel provided a lot of activities to keep our family busy, including a fantastic outdoor pool, a number of watersports, and a nice workout facility. But the thing that impressed our family the most was the culture of service demonstrated by each and every employee. Each interaction with hotel staff was accompanied by a warm greeting and ended with "my pleasure." A few of the staff that provided exceptional service were Kimmi at Kokomos and Hendra on the shuttle service to the beach. If you stay here you can be assured that the staff will attend to your every need. The only area that could use a little more attention is the quality of the rooms - while comfortable, our room looked a little dated and could have had some minor updates to make it ideal. But this did not detract from our stay at all.

Room Tip: All rooms are suites.

My wife and returned to this hotel for our anniversary in late June 2013. While the property is older, it more than met our needs. The check in process was great. Not only did we get the typical platinum arrival gift, but ice cream and drinks were sent to our room shortly after we arrived. We were also given certificates to the bar area for a free drink or snack.

On day two we were greeted with milk and cookies followed by wine and cheese. All staff members we spoke with from the front desk to the bartenders and chefs were great.

I'm not sure there is a bad room in the place since all rooms face the bay. There is a shuttle service that will take you across the street to the beach, but the beach is nicer across the bridge near pier 60.

If you haven't been to Clearwater the Marriott is a great full service location to stay. I'm sure we will be back. If I had to mention one negative it would be the mattress. I saw this mentioned in another post as well. It wouldn't prevent me from staying again, but both my wife and I noticed the quality wasn't the best and woke up with a sore back. Nothing some stretching and a few drinks by the pool couldn't fix though.

We recently visited this Marriott for a one night stay. Over the past few years we have stayed here on four different occasions and have enjoyed our visits and that is why we returned. During this stay we noted that our room was in need of a renovation. The faucet in the bath tub would not shut off, the tiles were stained and worn, the ceiling in the bedroom has a chip of stucco missing, and the sliding glass door locking mechanism was malfunctioning.

The location is good and the staff is friendly and welcoming but the rooms are not up to Marriott's standards.

The room had balcony overlooking the intercoastal. The outside walkway to the rooms had a good view of the gulf. The room was nice sized and clean. On Saturday evening there was entertainment in the bar. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Like most Marriott the price is a little high. Fortunately I had enough points to get most of the week we were in Florida free by using points.

The customer service at this hotel is wonderful. The staff is absolutely stellar in every way. We didn't encounter a single person who wasn't genuinely friendly and helpful to the utmost of their ability. Easily equal to the Four Seasons brand in terms of service.

Please note that it is not located on the beach - you will need to catch their shuttle to the beach, but it's only about five minutes away, so that was not a problem for us. The rooms are standard Marriott rooms and I was happy they hadn't been re-done in that uninviting, ultra-modern decor that Marriott has recently implemented at most of its Courtyard properties. When you stay at a traditional Marriott, you want nice furnishings with a touch of the local atmosphere worked in. I don't want to feel like I'm permanently in SoHo or Miami or LA. So, anyway - the rooms are basic and nice enough, but the mattresses are truly awful. Not sure why - Marriott has upgraded most of its Fairfield Inns and Courtyards to very nice mattresses, and neither brand is considered as luxurious as the Marriott brand. The W's have also have very nice mattresses, but since most of those properties are newer, that's to be expected. We would love to go back to the Clearwater Marriott, but we'll definitely wait until they have updated the rooms/upgraded the mattresses. My husband and I HAVE to be able to get a good night's sleep to really enjoy a vacation.

As a Marriott Rewards member, we stayed here for a weekend in June. After reading the reviews, we requested a room on a high floor to avoid the noisy generator facing the bay.

Upon checking in, they only had a room for us on the 5th floor near the generator. They did offer us to check back with them the next morning to see if there is any availability that may open up.
Since we were only there for the weekend and there was a medical convention going on all weekend long at the hotel with those folks staying there, we took the room on the 5th floor.
What a mistake! Sitting on the balcony, one couldn't enjoy the view with the extremely loud noisy generator sound and food smells wafting in the air from their kitchen.

With 3 teenagers, we would have preferred staying right at Clearwater Beach area where the location and action are far superior. We also preferred the powdery sand at Clearwater Beach (5 min. drive) rather than the Sand Key State Park (across the street) with their "seashelly" rough sand.

PROS:
1. Great view
2. Pool area was nice with plenty of lounge chairs, 2 waterfalls and large outdoor bar
3. Convenient golf cart service to and from Sand Key State Park, which is across the street. If walking, one would have to cut through the Sheraton Hotel.
4. Delivered a single serving size of milk and 2 cookies for our inconvenience
5. Friendly bell hops and front desk
6. Free parking
7. A 5 min. ride to the Clearwater Beach area, but need to pay to park. About $1 an hour
8. Parrot in the lobby or pool area. Entertained the kids and passerbys
9. Next door to the Columbia Restaurant. What a great find!
10. From the back of the hotel in the pool area, there's a boardwalk to the Columbia Restaurant, Maggie Mays (another great find for breakfast), Dunkin Donuts, some shops and a liquor store.
11. Given 2 complimentary drink cards from the front desk while inquiring for more information about the area

CONS:
a. Outside hallways connecting elevator to rooms. it rained one day while we there and hallway floors were quite slippery (even after the rain stopped) and one will get drenched walking to your room, depending on how the wind was blowing the rain

b. No free wifi in the room. $10 charge/day. Free wifi only in the lobby and public areas. Expected it to be included as a Marriott Rewards member

c. Room a bit dated, filthy and musty. We opened up the sofa bed and a cloud of dust appeared.

d. Bathroom door slides over the opening of bathroom. Doesn't lock nor provide much privacy.

e. Not a 5 star resort feel

f. Some of the servers at the pool were a bit unfriendly and didn't even check in on us after our food and drinks arrived.

As a loyal Marriott member I must say that I had very high expectations for a property that ranks as a category 6. The "suites" are very tired, furniture is old and outdated, the door to the balcony was completely stuck and it needed too of us to open it. The promo on the Marriott channel depicts the hotel as superb. They show rooms with nice furniture and nice center piece on the living room table. Nothing was Real. Obviously , a bit of false advertisement. Even with a AAA discount the room is $200.00 plus tax. I was assigned an accessible room that needed everything to be updated. The restroom door did not close either. For a category 6 I would have expected amenities like mouthwash, combs, toothbrush, toothpaste and a razor kit among other things without having to ask for them. It just had the basic of the basic. It is sad to say that the Marriott's in the USA are pathetic in comparison to rest of the world. Here in USA they offer nothing. As a loyal member here I was offer nothing, not even a nicer room as my rate even included breakfast.
Breakfast is a different story. They have no omelet station. I asked my server and I ordered an omelet that never made it to my table. Food was not of high quality and it took then a long time to refill food. That well presented. Servers by the pool are very unfriendly and live in their own bubble. It did have a nice pool. The food at the pool is horrible. They take forever to bring it and not appetizing. If it rains you are stuck in your room as the doors lead to an open air hallways were you get soaked if you leave your room. The hotel is pricy and not overrated as a category 6.
