“Busy spring break week”
Reviewed April 13, 2012

We (myself, husband, teenage daughter and son) stayed during the busy Easter week. Like other reviews, we found the location good for our days of exploring (from Honeymoon Beach to Pass-a-Grille), the beach across the street fine for a day (10 minute walk), hotel pool way too crowded with unruly children, suites were a bit small and dated, biggest room complaints were the bathroom door on a slider and very difficult to close and the sleeper sofa had springs poking through the thin mattress. We did request extra bedding which arrived quickly and made sleeping manageable. View of bay from balcony very nice. Staff nice and helpful. However one day at breakfast my waitress failed to put in my omlette order and then when it arrived after my family had long finished eating, it was made with burned bacon. The next day was better but getting refills on coffee, juice or water took way too long - it always seemed like they were short staffed for breakfast. Quite often the buffet would not be replenished in a timley fashion. I also found the way some of the breads were displayed were unsanitary - on pedestals, not covered in a high traffic area - more than once I saw crossiants hit the floor when someone brushed by with their elbow. Had our breakfast not been included with our room rate we would have eaten somewhere else after the first morning. Only one day did we eat lunch by the pool and it was a diaster, but no fault of the hard working staff - there just was not enough of them. Our sweet waitress told us food was taking 45 minutes and it took right at an hour - we enjoyed the view and waited patiently while we saw many rude guests coming unglued over lack of service. The weird thing was the GM visiting with a table of guests - not for a few minutes but the entire time we were there he stood at their table and talked (over an hour) while his staff was obvioulsy frazzled directly behind him and needing an extra hand. Even I helped clean off our table after eating. Clearly lack of team work and did not go unnoticed by many guests and resort staff. Food was fine. We love Marriott and vacation almost exclusively within their hotel chain and are also Marriott timeshare owners - we would return to the hotel but not during spring break season. We had great meals at Columbias, Caesar's on the Beach, Casa Tina in Dunedin, St.Pete Brasserie in downtown, wonderful grouper sandwich at Hurricane House in Pass-a-Grille, and Frenchie's Rockaway Grill (loud place with good food). For any fitness folks, a nice one hour walk is from the hotel, over the bridge to the main beach in Clearwater - nice restrooms and benches for a break but no water fountain, it's 30 minutes in each direction. Take some $$ and have an egg white omlette at IHOP next to the Holiday Inn & Suites. You really cannot go wrong with this part of Florida!

Lovely hotel with a nice pool. The pool food was pretty nice and good value. They have a good rental service as well, we rented a kayak and went kayaking around Clearwater bay. We got up really close to a dolphin - would really recommend doing that! There's a good diner around the corner called Maggie Mae's - they do a really nice breakfast and you can order by phone and collect it and bring it back to your room! Saves queuing to get a seat in the diner. Columbia around the corner is good for dinner too! Only disadvantage is there's no beach off the hotel, though the hotel does offer a complementary beach buggy down to the beach. It only takes about five minutes.

We stayed at this hotel for a week in late February. As if on cue, dolphins swam by as soon as we stepped onto the balcony for the first time. Wonderful views, even at night. The food at the outdoor grill was good, large portions, and hotel prices. It is within walking distance of several restaurants and shops. The beach is a hike, but the pool area was clean. We would definitely stay here again. Ask for a room on one of the upper floors so that you can enjoy the view. The entire staff was friendly and the room was very clean.

Room Tip: Get a room on one of the higher floors to improve the view and minimize noise.

We stayed here over Spring Break 2012. The views are amazing. From the front window you can see the turquoise blue of the ocean. From your balcony you have a view of the bay. It looks like you could literally walk out on the bay. Although the hotel is not on the beach, there is a shuttle that takes you there. We never had to wait over 5 minutes. The beach was not crowded at all, whereas Clearwater Beach across the bridge was crazy crowded. The pool is nice, but could be bigger considering the number of guests at the hotel. On the boardwalk down by the pool there are ample restaurants for all three meals and a little convenience store with reasonable prices. There was really no reason to get in your car and fight the traffic over on Clearwater Beach. We loved it.

Room Tip: Get a room on the higher floors, that way you avoid the noise of the pool and air conditioners, plus...

My Husband and I met our daughter here for Easter and enjoyed it very much.. It is a good 50 minutes from the Airport and about a $60 Taxi fare. The Staff at the Front Desk were exceptionally lovely, always. Our room was not ready, so we put on our bathing suits and went to the beach across the street at Sand Key Park. The Hotel supplies transportation as many have noted. It is a very large beach, with lots of crushed shells in the sand., You can rent Umbrella and Loungers and rent them for $25 a day. There is a building with changing rooms and Restrooms and a small Concession truck with food. There are also some very aggressive seagulls at this beach that will dive bomb anyone with food. We live on the beach so we found this quite annoying. The room is very adequate in size, not large. How people can complain about entering from the outdoors so you can see the beautiful Gulf to your right is beyond me, but there are always who people love to complain. Our only real complaint was that there was no wet bar. A microwave and empty fridge, 2 bottles of water. The furniture is quite dated and needs an upgrade, but was comfortable, as was the bed. Two flatscreen TV's, small but adequate bathroom with a shower/tub combination. It was very clean and had a beautiful view over looking the Bay from our small balcony. It was a very busy weekend for them, but we had no problems with the elevators. The Watercolors Restaurant/Bar is outstanding for both breakfast and dinner. We did have to make a reservation for dinner as they fill up quickly. Kokomos Grill outside in the Pool area is very nice as well for drinks and light bites. The outdoor/Pool area is the best part of the Hotel. Overlooking the Bay with Dolphins constantly playing in front was lovely. Great place to have a drink and relax. The Pool is very nice, and there is also a little Icecream Shop open during the day. We did explore the little Boardwalk from the Hotel and ate dinner at Columbias, which was excellent, as well as MaggieMae's for Breakfast, also excellent. The 2nd and 3rd day, we bought Trolley Passes, for $4 a piece which are good for the entire day and night. We decided to go to Clearwater Beach via Trolley and much preferred it to Sand Key Park Beach. Gorgeous white powder sand, Clear clean water, Chair/Umbrella rentals, Food and Fun, lots going on. Loved it there. All in all, the place grew on us. We are fortunate to have travelled a bit, and for the price we enjoyed the Hotel, but think perhaps some updating along with free wifi and a wet bar are somethingthe company should consider. Again, the Staff were exceptional.

Room Tip: Stay in a higher room, less noise from the pool and gorgoeus views! We were in room 805.

This was our third trip in four years to Clearwater and we've stayed at the Marriott on each of the three trips. I'm a Marriott Rewards member so I naturally gravitate to this property but I was a little disappointed this time. The accomodations are fine/average but there were some things that I'd like to see improved. First, one of the three elevators seemed to be out during part of our trip. That left us with two working elevators for a large hotel during spring break season. Second, the room is looking a little tired. It may be the impact of the weather/humidity or just over use. Third, my wife is a vegetarian and was very disappointed with the breakfast buffet as they only had one utensil for the eggs and eggs with ham. If you're a vegetarian, you know that you don't like meat touching what you eat and my wife wasn't happy with this. Other than that, this is a fine hotel property.

Back in the 80's this place was probably waaay ahead of its competition and super duper fancy. They need serious rehab done now! Pool area was fun. Pool bar was a saviour. Staff was friendly and helpful. Views of bay were breath taking. Breakfast buffet for kids was an awesome deal!! Down sides...tiny beds, small rooms, out-dated decor and room furniture, rust on all doors, beach was soooooo far (I really wanted the sand right there....not down the road to public beach). And for $350-$400 a night?? Yowza! Worth abt $100 less, at most. But all in all prefered being in Sand Key over Clearwater beach ANYDAY. Clearwater is a bit too much FLA cheese for me!! (Next TV reality show should not be abt NJ but rather Florida!!). If you do stay here...a MUST is dinner right next door t the Columbia restaurant. Hands down BEST meal of our vacation!! Next time?? Sheraton Sand Key---accross the street and directly on the beach!!
