“Great Food, Great Service, & Reasonably Priced”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2008

The Island Room is a gem in the rough! Cedar Key is famous for its rustic atmosphere. It is what makes it a special place. There are no chains or franchise businesses or restaurants in the community. Most everything there is either locally owned or at least locally operated. The Island Room is a great restaurant in most every respect. The atmosphere is characteristically "Cedar Key" rustic. The drinks are good. They carry a wide selection of beers. However, the quality of the food is consistent and always delicious. What really sets this restaurant apart from many of the others in addition to the outstanding cuisine is the service. The bar and wait staff are wonderful. We have eaten there numerous times and never had anything but a great dining experience. The size of your party doesn't matter. Small or large, they seem to appreciate your business. They even deal with some of us who tend to get a little rowdy after 3 or 4 of their outstanding margaritas with a smile and a great sense of humor!!!

“don't go don't waste your money unless your starved”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2007

we went here starved. there was only 1 server and 3 tables so the service wasn't that great. we had the andouille sausage appetizer which was real spicy hot but ok we had to wait for the bread and only got 1 piece each- it was pretty good. my husband had the ribeye and i had the grouper piccata both with the augratin potatos and both also came with broccoli and carrots-my husband said my ribeyes are better and after tasting it i agreed and i'm not that great of a cook. the grouper was ok and the sauce could have been better. the augratin potatos were missing something i couldn't eat them so i gave them to my husband who was starved and he ate them. i like good food and i don't mind paying for it and this was definitely not worth the price-the next morning at the condo we were staying at i saw a takeout dinner on the ground-someone must have left it for the cats and it was a ribeye dinner from the island room-not my husbands cause we were starved-but the cats didn't even touch it. i had to take a pic of it because it was so funny. we ate at sea breeze and froggers both of which were much better and i would recommend.

“Two weekends in a row”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2006

We had heard great things about the Island Room Restaurant. So when we went the
first time, we thought maybe the "waitress had a headache!". She told us that there
were no seconds of the bread until everyone had received "firsts!" We didn't realize
there was a shortage on "bread"... So we just had salad and soup and left.

The next weekend we decided to give it a try again just in case we were wrong with
out assessment. But after sitting there for a while and could smell a "sewage smell",
we decided not to stay for even soup or salad. I think the owner needs to know about
these problems... I don't think he was there on either time.

“Nice, but costly for what you get”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2006

Very nice location - great view of the water, and the dining room itself is very open and inviting. The food, however, left something to be desired. This is probably the most expensive restaurant on Cedar Key (apart from the Island Hotel dining room), and for the price you pay you'd expect top-rate fare. What we got, however, was decent but certainly not spectacular.

We started with the 'mixed grill' appetizer. For $8, you get a couple of shrimp, a handful of scallops, and some tiny pieces of mushy fish - not nearly enough to sate 2 hungry travellers. Our entrees looked promising enough, but neither delivered in terms of taste. The 'Crab Carbonara' had a good helping of crab, but the entire dish was overwhelmed with heaps of salty bacon. The crab really should have been featured more heavily here. We also ordered one of the specials, a tilapia dish served with shrimp, crab, and potatos/veggies. For $25, you would expect more than a single, small filet with a few shrimp and bits of crab meat thrown on top. The kicker was that we were quoted $18 for this special by our server, so we have no idea whether we were overcharged, or if it was an honest mistake. In either case, we weren't very happy once we saw the bill.

To be fair, the food was passable, but not nearly good enough to justify the price (and reputation) that preceeds this place. We might try here again to see if we just caught them on an off night.
