The Crooked River Lighthouse is just outside Carrabelle, FL. There is an excellent museum. Check days and hours of operation before you plan your trip. The staff was very helpful and there are a couple of different information videos to watch.

I had never been to a metal lighthouse and was looking forward to seeing it and possibly climbing it. The climb was not completed because it is only open 2 days of the week. Additionally, there was no way for ventilation in the lighthouse, and it was an extremely hot day. However, it was an awesome sight to see up close. There is a park area surrounding the lighthouse, but it appeared shabby. The grass needed to be mowed, and the markings to let one know where it was were poor; I drove past it twice. The keeper's house is interesting and the person at the desk knowledgeable. It is run by volunteers; perhaps they need more to get the place to be an exciting adventure.

While returning home from Apalachicola, FL, we stopped at the Crooked River Lighthouse in Carrabelle, FL (right off US Hwy 98). The lighthouse is a fourth rebuild of the lighthouse initially built on Dog Island, just across the bay from Carrabelle. After three hurricanes and three lighthouse destructions, the last and current iteration of the lighthouse was a redesign from brick and stone to a unique steel structure to better withstand high winds of a hurricane type storm. The new location for the lighthouse was just west of the city of Carrabelle on property north of U.S. Hwy 98. The Crooked River Lighthouse was de-commissioned, and the two adjacent houses (one for lighthouse keeper and one for assistant keeper) were sold and moved west of Carrabelle in a state park. Local citizens banded together and formed a group to purchase and restore the lighthouse. Visitors can climb the lighthouse on weekend days for a $5.00 fee. A visitor's center was built next to the lighthouse, where educational videos are shown depicting the history of the four lighthouse that were build on Dog Island and the last one on the mainland just west of Carrabelle.

If you're in the area and like lighthouses this is worth the stop just to take a picture. I can remember at one time a pier was across the street over the water but it's long gone.
