We watched a brief video about the early years of Cape Coral and were then led on a tour through two of their buildings by a docent who has lived in the Cape a long time. They have enough stuff here that you could easily spend hours if you wanted to read everything. There's also a research library. Also a nice little gift shop. If you're a seasonal resident or a new resident, this is well worth your time.

This small museum is an interesting little trip into Cape Coral's history...such that it is. For a town established in the 1950s, there's not a lot of history, but the establishment of the town, plus some glimpses into what life here before the town, are interesting to anyone spending time or living here. We did find, upon doing a bit of research, that the history of the Rosen brothers (the founders & creators of Cape Coral) was glossed over a bit. They were eventually accused of fraud, and one brother committed suicide. You won't hear a word about that in the interesting video you can watch, nor in any of the documents about them. But it's a slice of 50s advertising genius, style and promise, and that's what makes it so interesting. There are lots of original documents, sales pieces mostly, and for someone like me, who was in commercial art for many years, it was a great look back at mid century style. The tiny grounds have a little garden with a few interesting plants. The whole thing should take less than an hour, as the museum mainly occupies 2 rooms, and the grounds are just a quick walk around a couple of small buildings. Definitely worth a look, however, and a nice little slice of city history.

A visit here makes for an interesting afternoon. It reminded me of European museums of small cities with more memorabilia than artifacts. The Rosen brothers marketing was amusing and worth the visit just for that. Cape Coral is lucky to have captured this all under one (or three) roof.
