We booked this reservation with Travelers Advantage Network (TAN). This is buy far the best property and best equipped kitchen we've experience so far. The one-bedroom units do face south, so the outdoor balconey is in the shade for the afternoon and evening - a little chilly with the breeze in the winter months - just a consideration if you expect to dine outside a lot.
Outside of the room, the pool area is pristine - absolutely beautiful. We even saw dolphins swimming in the harbor. The restaurants on site where all terrific. The servers where top notch and the food was good. At dusk, peskey no-seeim (sp?) bugs come out and their bites can take months to heal - be prepared with a little bug spray while you enjoy the sunset.
As for the location being just "ok" for a weeklong stay. Cape Coral doesn't have much going outside of the local Elk Club; there isn't really a town center. You need to drive to Ft. Myers or Naples if you are looking for activities, theater, or decent shopping. Plan to bring some good reads and sit by the pool if you are not up to drive 30 minutes to find a little culture.
Marina Village is closest to the Fort Myers Airport. It is about 25 minutes away without traffic. The most direct route requires that you cross the Cape Coral causeway - a $2.00 toll gate going into to Cape Core - no charge for East bound traffic going to Ft. Myers.
Upon check-out we were able to drive, fill up with gas, return a rental car and check our bags at the airport in about 45 minutes. The airport is small and easy to get in and get out off. For Costco members, there is a Costco on the way to the airport (Daniels & Cleveland) where the gas is typically 15-20 cents cheaper than other in town choices.
Sanibel Island is about 30 minutes away and there is a $6.00 toll (one-way). Driving the stretch of the Island will take another 30 minutes.
Pine Island is about 20 minutes away and no toll required. There are some quaint little art shops and restaurants on the island and ferry service to Cabbage Key where you can order a "cheese burger in paradise".
What to do:
Dine at the Marina Village. The on premise Nauti Mermaid and Marker 92 are some of the best dining choices in town.
Shop and dine at Cape Harbor. It is a quick 5-10 drive and the nice views from Rum-runners Restaurant are worth it. The service and wine selections are excellent. I can also recommend the Gelato at Runagrounds in the same complex.
Go to Esterra Spa at the Marina Village for some pampering. Recommend a facial with Joanna - she's excellent and served me a mimosa before my treatment. The rates for facials are resonable and there is no pressure or pitch to buy products.
Where to buy Groceries/Fresh Fish to stock your kitchen:
Publix is the main grocery store chain in town with several locations nearby in Cape Coral. Good - not expansive choices of produce and food. Wine department is geared to budget buys.
Merrick Seafood is an excellent place to pick up some fresh fish and ready-to-cook prepared fish.1229 SE 47th Ter, Cape Coral, FL
Buy fresh shrimp off the boats at Trico Shrimp Company in Ft Myers. They will give you easy cooking instructions for your peel n eat shrimp. If you plan to go here near the end of your stay, bring some shrimp home! This place will pack the shrimp for you. We purchased head-on jumbo Gulf shrimp in the middle of Dec for $9.99/lb.
